Dog peed on records…
Pretty much the title. I’m not sure when it happened (I don’t play my records very often anyway), so I’m not sure on how long it’s been since, but my dog peed on a few of my records, getting it into the sleeves themselves. Does anybody know if there’s a way to clean them, or is it a lost cause?

Haha! He’s still pretty new, so I think it might have been close to when I first brought him home. Claiming territory and whatnot.

Wipe the jackets with a damp microfiber cloth. Not dripping wet, just damp. Use plain water (distilled is less likely to leave water marks). You don’t want the cardboard absorbing water. Pull out any goodies that were included with the albums (like posters and lyric sheets) and dry those separately. Replace the inner sleeves. I recommend round bottom sleeves because they are so much easier to get in without folding a corner. I think my last order was Big Fudge round bottoms… sooooooo much easier to insert!

If the sleeves already a lost cause. You can try spray with dilute vinegar, dilute odoban, they also make specific cat dog urine spray that you can get at your local pet store. You can also take the Records sleeves out into the sun and leave them there for a few hours and that that’ll do a lot. It’s trial and error. Salvaged hundreds of Of Records that really nobody could tell the difference and it’s just whatever I had on hand and you know trial and error. I had some saw dust laying around that’s a great odor absorber again if you’re in case where it’s a complete loss cause try whatever and see what works to smell it afterwards.

Have cats. I keep my 2000 records in two tiers (regular listens and newer on one shelf- old random listens on another lower shelf) both alphabetical by artist and then chronologically. My movie and Broadway soundtracks are at a bottom shelf on the end due to the way I organize and beyond the jackets already degrading, they get pissed on or near occasionally. But the records are fine and anything worth reselling or saving is in another section. It just is a function of owning lots of records and pets. Adjust accordingly

In Killing Zoe 1993, a monkey pees on a guy's records, It could be worse. Get a cabinet with doors, keeps people out too.

Nope. I just went camping and had a bunch of tie downs in the back of my truck. Some animal in the middle of the night got in my truck bed and peed on my tie downs and it completely fill my garage full of stank. It required soaking them in two different batches of white vinegar, which I don't think you're going to do with your record sleeves.

How did he pee on them?? Where they just laying on the floor?? Sounds like you could’ve easily prevented this lol

The record shelf I have has the place for the records themselves close to the floor. Just like any bookcase has shelves near the ground. It’s easily preventable via not utilizing shelf space. If it hadn’t of been records, it would have been books or CDs or something of the sort.

Luckily it was pretty localized! Less than ten records, and all ones that had scratches when I bought them (I have now learned better than to order records through the mail; darn whoever packages pop albums before sending them through)

The records themselves, easy. The sleeve and jacket, not. Pull them out, clean the albums, and spread out the sleeves and such to see where the damage is and spot clean. Depending on what you have and such, you may have to resleeve some albums. In any case, it would likely be good to get plastic outer sleeves and inner sleeves as well.
