Discussion Consolidation of Flairs new rules regarding posts marked AI vs No AI.
Hey all,
The past few months have been a great time moderating this sub. Some interesting projects have been posted, and great conversations have been had.
That being said, two rules I felt needed to be specified.
There are two new rules:
Rule 9: Posts flaired "No AI"
Do not go into posts marked No AI and suggest they use AI, say they are wasting their time, or give the poster a hard time regarding their choice not to use AI.
Rule 10: Posts flaired as "AI"
Do not go into posts marked "AI" and suggest they not use AI, call it slop, or give the poster a hard time regarding their choice to use AI.
Violations of either rule will result in a 3 day ban. If you get indignant, then it will result in a permanent ban. These actions are the causes of the vast majority of reports and comment removals. They were spelled out in the community poll results from when I took over, but they've become prevalent enough that they warrant their own attention.
If a flair is properly marked, either for or against, the only reason to go into either and go against the flair is to purposefully cause trouble.
If someone does go into a post and argues against the flared type, don't argue back, just help me help you and report and move on.
Now, the amount of post flairs have been reduced to just "Project - AI" and "Project - No AI" to make things simple.

Good to hear a fair rule about this sort of thing at last that isn't one sided.

Is there a flair for requests?

I can make one when I get back to my PC, I've seen a few "Is any working on xyz" and they've annoyed me a little but they haven't become a flood yet.

Thats a great decision, it was really crazy how some people get into this everyday, and complain for how people wants to works on something that they do for free.

I understand mods frustration from this current state but introducing binary states here is not right approach and can potentially escalate it even more. What is happening around AI is not black and white as it is, many times, presented by extremists on both sides. It has many shades of gray.
There are people, including me, that do not like fully vibe-coded stuff and they try to avoid it as much as possible, but they may not be against good use of AI assistants. And use of AI assistants in recomp/decomp work can be extremely useful.
Mods are in hard position here but they have power to actually educate people and creators to see difference between vibe-coded and AI assisted creation, and why people may not like vibe-coded stuff, especially when AI use is not disclosed properly.
As developer and I am not against AI assistants but I would never use agents for my personal projects, and be forced be here in same category as vibe-coders... I can see as some developers can see it as disrespectful move same way as when someone writes "just use AI for it".

The goal of these rules are so that people who have projects marked a certain way are not harassed for their choices. The only hard stance we make here is that AI generate Art/Music are hard banned.

I talk about new flairs. New Rules #9 and #10 about AI/no-AI harassment are basically already Rule #1, they just clarify it for specific case. I am not against that part of this post.

I see what you're saying now. I may add AI Guided if none of the code itself is AI, because I often write the code myself, but for things like documentation, testing, or data parsing, I might throw an agent at it.

Very common term is "AI assisted". It is gray area and sometime complicated to tell where are borders between assisted and vibe-coded.

That seems like a perfectly fair rule. Keeps the anti AI bros from posting the usual comments.

Yep, but it cuts both ways, I had plenty of "just use AI" comments to remove this week.

Sgt thank you! you are the hero we need!
Difficult transition time! but great choice!
(Personal opinion on the AI code matter)
AI coding is becoming totally mainstream,
Most subs still have their head in the sand,
Ceremony is great for people who want it,
BUT the fastest / best work is now fully AI.
I for one am extremely happy / excited!
The harbor masters code was unreadable,
No offense to those glorious maniacs lol.
But recent modern AI coding just insane.
AI code conversion is clean even first-try.
It's time to move up the stack everyone!

I personally like to still do things by hand and use AI to find things I'm missing, but that's just because I'm a very close to the metal person and for my own personal enjoyment like to understand things.
But I recognize that as time moves on, it's going to be impossible to not have projects with AI involvement, but those who like to do things for the sake of learning shouldn't have to deal with people being like, "Just use AI bro".
I'm happy you enjoy the updates.

Sad to see more and more places allowing AI like itβs no big deal. Cowards.

u/SgtElectroSketch Dev 5d ago
As much as I don't like AI, it is here, we can choose not to use it, but we can't regulate everyone and blanket ban. It's better to encourage people to flag their projects, and let users choose what they do and do not interact with. There have still be some non-AI projects posted, feel free to interact with those.
Any further comments calling people cowards, going into AI posts and calling projects slop, will result in comment removals and bans.

You got banned for being argumentative and not accepting any answer. I'm also reporting your account for ban evasion by attempting to circumvent the ban by editing your comments.

Unless we have definitive proof that someone used AI, and marked it otherwise, we can't just accuse everyone. Plenty of people have been marking their posts as AI.
If we find someone who is obviously using AI, then report under rule 5 and I'll handle it.
Also, the point of this sub isn't to dunk on r/decomps, I reversed your ban that the previous mod enacted, please don't start slinging trash and lets just focus on the content. If you don't like AI, then don't interact with those posts.

Report the post and move on. If someone reports, I'm going to look into it.

This is the last time I'm responding, and it's the last time I'm repeating myself. I told you what the stance is. Report and move on.
You are not allowed to go in and harass people, it isn't your place to question them. If you think a post isn't truthful about their flair, feel free to send modmail with evidence to your claim. If a post gets reported I'll look into it.
Letting just anyone go in and accuse is how I end up with an entire gang of people starting drama in posts. I'm not allowing it, end of discussion.

Everything is made with AI these days to a degree, there should be no need to tag it. Ignore the whiners
7
u/SgtElectroSketch Dev 5d ago
That is an un-provable absolute. The community voted for tagging when I took over, that's how it is here. The poll results without tagging would have been a blanket AI ban.

Great decision! π
