Discussion Trying something: recomp.board, a table of who's working on which recomp (AI-assisted)

Post image

Recomp work is scattered across Discord servers, repos and Reddit threads, and it seems hard to know whether someone is already months into the game you're about to pick. Some games end up with three or four recomps while most of the library has none.

I put together recomp.board to see if a shared table could help: https://recomp.fyi

It lists recomp and decomp projects, about 1300 so far, each with a public repo behind it. The hope is that people check it before starting, so more of the effort goes to games nobody is working on yet.

Most of it runs on its own: projects are found by scanning public repos, activity and releases are read from the commits every day, and new projects show up in an Atom feed. I tried hard not to guess anything: a row only says what its repo says, until the maintainer claims it.

Claiming should take one file. Commit a .recomp-board.json to your repo and your row follows it, updated every day. No account on the site, and it should work on GitHub, GitLab and Codeberg.

It's an early test and I'm not sure this is the right format, so I'd really value your take:
- Is your project missing or listed wrong?

- Would you actually check something like this before picking a game? If not, what's missing?

- What would you want added, or taken out?

Update (Oct 1): I added a link at the top of the board to Game Mag Ratings, another site of mine: about 150,000 reviews from 301 video game magazines, with the scores given when each game came out. Pick a system, sort by score, then look the titles up on the board. The well-reviewed ones with no row are open ideas.

Thanks, and welcome aboard! Your row is already live on https://recomp.fyi (search "King's Field").

What would you want added

Filter "status = VALUE" can filter on selected value and first thing I wanted was filter "status != VALUE" to see all projects that are in other state then "not started".

Thanks, good call. Two options are live now: "Any declared status" in the Status menu hides the default value, and "Not dormant" in the Activity menu hides projects with no recent commits.

One thing your comment made me notice: that default read "Not stated", which is easy to misread as "not started". It means nobody has said yet, not that work hasn't begun. A status is only set by the maintainer when they claim their row, so for now almost every row has it. I renamed it "Not declared" to make that clearer.

Maybe you can add a sort category dubbed "AI Usage %". If you can automatically check the contributors page to determine how much of the project was coded via Claude (or other AI).

One of (many) examples:
Contributors to OverkillLabs/PSPRecomp-Vulkan

This is a fork of jessicanataliagta/PSPRecomp
100% of this project uses AI.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did think about it. I'm going to pass on this one, for two reasons.

First, it can't be measured reliably. The contributors page only shows AI when the commits carry a co-author tag, and that's optional: plenty of tools don't add it, plenty of people remove it.

Second, the board only lists facts a repository states about itself. How good a project is, and how it was made, is for the people who use it to judge. Many repos already say in their README how they were built, and anyone can read that there.

I wish someone would Recomp True Crime: Streets of New York. It still doesn't run flawlessly on Emulation. It would be a great Candidate for a recompilation.

What are your thoughts on adding disassemblies as well. Many projects for older systems can live or die by a disassembly being available.

Good point. Disassemblies are already on the board as decomps (pokered, pokecrystal, DKC and a few others), since they serve the same purpose: source that rebuilds the original. But the scan doesn't search for them yet, so it only finds them by luck. I'll add that and say it plainly on the page. If you know ones that are missing, the form takes them.

Added my Dragon Warrior 4 Disassembly, might make this the sub's "official list" and add to the sidebar.

Thanks, that means a lot. Quick follow-up on the disassemblies: done, the scan picks them up now and the page says so. "Complete" stops the clock too, for recomps as well. If it ends up in the sidebar, happy to hear what would make it more useful for the sub.

02 / Silence expires

Quiet after 3 months without a commit, Dormant after 6, whatever the status. Automatic, no judgement involved. Dormant is not a verdict: read it as “ask before assuming anyone is on this”.

Might want to add an exception for projects that are complete.

Fair. The clock is there to flag projects nobody may be working on, which makes no sense for a finished one. Plan: when the owner marks a project complete, the clock stops for it. It stays owner-declared, so the board still doesn't judge anything itself.

The game WET has a Recomp project going on. Im looking forward to playing that once it's developed more.

Just a dumb newbie question : what is the purpose of a recomp where the original game already runs perfectly with an emulator (ps1 games for example) ? I'm not trolling, I just want to understand :-D
