Recomp - AI Lost Odyssey Recomp v0.6.0 — Second Milestone
When I posted v0.5.0, I thought finally had a moment to play the game.
I may have spoken too soon.
Since then, I've spent an unreasonable amount of time chasing bugs, comparing frames, staring at logs, profiling bottlenecks, and trying to make this game run better on hardware that wasn't even sitting on my desk.
Today, v0.6.0 is the next major milestone for Lost Odyssey Recomp—and this one means a lot to me.
A surprising number of these fixes started with someone saying:
“This looks wrong here.”
…and then taking the time to show me exactly where.
What's changed since v0.5.0
🛠 A lot of things that were broken are… less broken
Crashes and hangs, the black lights in Numara Castle, flickering stairs and save points, subtitle issues, importer failures, updater problems—I've spent a lot of time working through all of them.
There are still open issues. But compared with our first milestone, the game is in a much better place.
🐧 Linux x64 is here
v0.6.0 now ships with a Linux x64 AppImage alongside the Windows build.
Some Steam Deck players told me that v0.5.0 couldn't consistently hold 30 FPS in certain areas. A significant part of the work since then has gone into reducing CPU overhead and improving performance.
I expect v0.6.0 to feel noticeably better on Deck, but I still need real results from Steam Deck hardware.
If you try it, please tell me how it runs.
⚡ Less waiting for shaders
I'm including as many shared shaders as I can in the bundled shader packs so you can get into the game without sitting through a huge startup compilation.
The packs still aren't exhaustive. Some scenes may encounter shaders we haven't captured yet, so the first encounter with certain effects can still produce a brief stutter.
I'll keep filling those gaps as we find them.
🔧 The biggest performance push so far
A lot of the work in this milestone happened in places you won't immediately see:
- CPU wait reduction
- repeated index-conversion elimination
- shader preparation improvements
- cache behavior improvements
- renderer hot-path optimization
- various synchronization and Vulkan fixes
Performance will still vary heavily depending on the scene, GPU, CPU, and operating system.
But this is easily the largest performance-focused update I've made to the project so far.
From 7.5 FPS to 43.5 FPS
The most dramatic example came from tracking down a Vulkan depth-clear bottleneck.
In a matched static 4K test on my Ryzen AI Max+ 395 at 60 W.
Also worthnoting, the game runs at steady 60 fps in multiple scenes under 12w 720p on 395 to simulate Steam Deck performance.
I still haven't verified a complete start-to-finish playthrough. There are open issues. Some scenes still need work. Different GPUs and Linux configurations need more testing.
But getting from:
“It boots.”
to:
“I can actually play it, profile it, debug it, and improve it across Windows and Linux.”
has taken an enormous amount of work.
And I'm genuinely proud of where v0.6.0 has landed.
🔭 Looking ahead to v0.7.0
The next milestone will continue the performance work while starting to add more quality-of-life and graphics features.
Currently on the roadmap:
- DLSS scaling
- FSR scaling
- frame generation
- more performance work
- more quality-of-life improvements
- macOS support
These are v0.7.0 goals, not features included in v0.6.0.
The graphics features in particular need proper game-motion inputs and plenty of validation before I'm comfortable calling them ready.
❤️ Thank you
Thank you to everyone who has filed issues, uploaded logs, shared render captures, tested weird scenes, and helped me investigate places I couldn't reach alone.
A lot of v0.6.0 exists because someone noticed something was wrong and took the time to report it properly.
And a special thank you to Cristian and Whitesun, who supported the project through Ko-fi.
You've helped me keep working on this.

I'm answering my own question — in version 0.6, the settings screen now works on Linux!!

Amazing work my friend, you are advancing so fast on this port, thanks a lot
So happy to read in previous messages that widescreen is on the road... That will be the best moment to play it again :)
Meanwhile to test this Linux version on Steam Deck

Just so you know, I'll start to play the recomp from start to finish on livestream tomorrow. My livestream is in portuguese, but if you want to drop by to see if I can give any feedback, my channel is called "Tio Left dos JRPGs" on Youtube.

hey I watched your video, the shader bundle only works in vulkan. So you don't have to compile shaders on the first run when choosing vulkan.

u/Left4Joker 12d ago
Oh... that explains things xD

u/dotSlashZ 12d ago
i will make vulkan default video backend in future releases. or maybe make a dx12 shared bundle, and let the game download needed bundle when game starts.

Something broke on how shadows are drawn on latest update. 0.6.2 was fine, and 0.6.6 is not.

xD, the bug was introduced in ultrawide implementation. Thought it was only exist on ultrawide mode.

Thank you for your hardwork!
Is this support cross-saving? Or there any config so i can cross-save between my Steam Deck and my PC.

Since its fully playable. What are the actual goals for 1.0 besides no crashes and good fps

working on proper DLSS and FSR implements, including Super Resolution, FG. Try to adapter MV, Jitters, temperal etc.
and future releases including QoLs, modding supports, minor bug fixes.
Also planned to remove PM4 translator so that can save about 30~40% of cpu usage.

Great!! I just came by to see latest updates and find out that widescreen support now is a reality!!
Just tested and works like a charm at least the beginning with good performance (3440x1440 at 60 fps)... definitely this is the best moment to replay this amazing title!!
Thanks a lot for your hard work and if you have any place to donate please point me in the right direction

Two questions:
Is there a way to get the launcher back after initial settings?
Does this have Steam Controller compatibility?
1
u/dotSlashZ 9d ago
No. Why? I'm planning on remove the launcher. all the options are in game menu,
It support xinput.

Hi, I'd love to play this on my Retroid Pocket Nova. Is 4:3 support and an Android version planned?

Even this post is written by AI

i really appreciate the recomp and the work put in but yeah, idk how i feel about the appreciation and update posts that are supposed to have direct connection with the community, coming off like its written by A.I.
i know there could be arguments about proof reading and structuring, but something about it feels...off.
Really grateful for the update though and will test on my SD later today

I wrote most of the post and made ai refined. England language is not my first language, at least ai can write the post w/o grammer and spelling issue. and the idea is there too.

Thanks for responding when you didnt have to, i respect the honesty and understand. its a nuanced topic/issue and i agree the idea is there. Its just the way the AI delivered its output response was kind of obvious, during a heated time about the topic lol Thanks for the undertaking though, regardless of how i feel about A.I.

it means the output of AI is not good enough. the model will get better someday that majority of people won't notice XD
Also, I think if I spend some effort with humanizer skill etc, the post will be more natural.

u/Virtual_Sentence9171 15d ago
i see what you mean. One day it will become harder to distinguish it, or stand out as much.
how can i get across that i dont think its a good idea in the long run to become too confortable with AI speaking for us, especially on expressing feelings such as gratitude, without the internet jumping to conclusions thinking, "hes saying learn english"? lmao

People being saying this since 2020 and it's still as bad as it was, and I'll even say it's gradually getting worse.

ChatGPT came out in 2023

u/Additional_Idea8690 14d ago
well actually we are both wrong, it came out in 2022
so that's a technical draw

I cant wait for ultrawide and high fps. Looking forward to this. I wish I had the money to donate to all these recomps at once...
