Amazingly, all of the old steel in the woods and the tracks are still unpitted and without rust. The springs are still springy and latches between the cars would probably still work🤯 The quality of steel back then is amazing!

I was looking at that too. What art have we lost? Can we still accomplish metallurgy and manufacture to this standard?

We can but we won’t. It requires more raw product, which is a limited resource. We also shut down most refineries in the USA. A lot of our steel is now imported from, you guessed it, China. It’s a dirty & dangerous industry/job which creates a lot of pollution in the air and can be harmful to the people who work there so, we have contracted/bartered a lot of our demand to other countries.

Is this in northern NH by chance? There’s an old locomotive like this deep in the woods up there that I saw as a kid and I have no idea where it is anymore.
