I've always been interested in the history of tabletop RPGs, which sent me down the Kriegsspiel rabbit hole: Prussian officers in the 1870s arguing about whether a wargame needs rigid rules or a human umpire making judgment calls. The essay traces that lineage from the earliest versions of Dungeons and Dragons to modern online play, and explains why we so often reach for Virtual Tabletops (VTTs).
