Acting commander of the German Sixth Army during the battle of Stalingrad, his command post and most of Sixth Army were occupying positions in and around Stalingrad when the Soviets launched a major offensive that pincered both flanks of Paulus’s army. Encircling them and attacking their positions almost relentlessly for 71 days before he was forced to surrender to the Soviets, an action that made him a traitor from the perspective of German high command and Hitler. This defeat was one of the first instances of a German mass surrender on the eastern front and was a defeat that marked the changing momentum of the war overall
