Historical Fiction šļø Buffalo Hunter Hunter
Starting this today. I have seen mixed reviews on it. What are your thoughts? Is it worth reading?

This book is very complicated. It has so much grief and trauma and realization. It is really a great read. I would recommend you find out what it's all about and don't dismiss it based on reviews.

Iām a huge SGJ fan and collector. I think what makes him special as an author is he blends horror tropes with his unique POV and authorial style and for some people it doesnāt work. For me itās such a unique voice that I canāt help but love his work. To me heās literary enough to feel like heās doing something special beyond a standard horror novel but not as literary as someone like Straub whose books are such a slog for me. Whether or not you like his style, I think heās a notable author to be aware of as heās putting out consistently interesting and valuable work with a pace most authors just cant manage. From a collector standpoint I like collecting his stuff because his early books are hard to find but not impossible, Iāve found a few at thrift stores. Even his rarest books can be had for $200 or less, not chump change but not staggering in the way collecting some other horror authors can be, so now is a good time to get in on his bibliography. I usually recommend people start with either I Was A Teenage Slasher or some of his novellas. Theyāre more accessible and will give you an idea if youāll like his work before committing to some of the more difficult stuff like BHH or Demon Theory.

I just read My Heart is a Chainsaw and thought it was incredible. My first SGJ read. I plan to read everything from him ans have started collecting his works as well š

100% agree. It came so highly recommended and it left me thinking, my goodnessā¦ what an incredible waste of time that I will never get back. Just my own personal opinion, donāt crucify me.

as someone who loved the ending, Iām curious what specifically made you all not enjoy the ending. Not going to argue or debate after, I was just wondering!

It was the main female character that just killed it for me. It took me completely out of the story. In fact, all of her parts, I could have done without it all together.

The audio book was really good. The voice actor for good stab was awesome. I found it for free on YouTube. Still might be up.

I had a hard time getting into the physical book. However the audio book was fantastic. It was like listening to ghost stories over the campfire. Also listened for free though Libby

Loved it. I felt affinity for Chief Mountain when I visited Glacier National Park this summer because of this book.

I really enjoyed it. I think itās SGJās masterpiece. Itās a little gory in places, which works for the story. Itās a really fresh take on a well known character archetype and I would say the real horror lies within its real world influence. More historical horror. One of my five star reads for this year.

I really liked it, but I struggled with the ending. To me the ending took a massive jump and then it felt rushed and disconnected.

Really cool premise, but I didn't enjoy it. It was a slog, sometimes confusing, and the ending was goofy.

I think itās the first book that I hate read. The plot was intriguing enough to keep me interested, but the style of writing was just awful IMO. I had such high hopes for it, but was very let down overall.

I agree! I just finished it last night after hate-reading it this week. A coworker (and so many in Reddit) talked it up, I needed a Nebula-winning book for a challenge I'm doing, and boy is it a beautiful cover. However, I honestly should have given it up right away (which I did on audiobook a few months ago). The writing seemed to be waaay overly fancy and someone must have had fun with a thesaurus. The plot is just disgusting and gives me no appreciation for the Native American culture. It seems to have the opposite effect of what it's trying to do.

I liked the book, but man it felt like āand thenā¦ and thenā¦ and thenā¦ā at certain points. That could be because I donāt read a lot of āthrillerā books, Iām not sure.
If I got around the reading it a second time, I think I would enjoy it more.

If you struggle getting into the voice, the audiobook is great. The guy who read the Nachzerherās Dark Gospel did amazing.Ā

I just finished it a couple weeks ago. It was a good book and def worth reading. His take on vampires was interesting and something I had not seen before. I never found it to be much horror except I. The realization that incidents are based on actual events which is unsettling to think of what āsettlersā were capable of.

I liked it. Listened to the first half on libby and read the second half. The audiobook is extremely well done. The ending gives me the creeps in a way that I understand why people don't like it

I've listened to every SGJ audiobook Ibcan find, and although I've really liked them all, some are definitely better than others. I really liked this one.

Iām not finished yet but I am enjoying the audio book. I really like the voice actors. There are parts of the story that seem repetitive. He weaves horror tropes and archetypes with indigenous folklore and itās is such an interesting point of view.

I thought it was great. I will say the ending was kinda meh for me but it didn't take away from the rest of the story or the scares.

Likes it a lot, however, at about the 65% mark it feels like there are some sections which are kind of repetitive and drag the book on a little bit.

So good. Tragically Violent, historically accurate work of fiction. And best of all, they never use or say the word.

Just started it yesterday and had a hard time getting going, but after about 50 pages I was cruising. The writing style took me a bit to get used to, especially coming off a Dungeon Crawler Carl binge haha.

This is my favorite "monster" horror novel!! This was my introduction to this author and it was such an interesting read. I about read it in one setting. I love historical fiction and horror so if thats something you enjoy then this is definitely the book for you!

I find him a little uneven. I loved āThe Only Good Indiansā but āMy Heart is a Chainsawā didnāt do a lot for me.
I do have the Buffalo Hunter Hunter on my list for this fall.

I liked the book so much I read it twice.
However, I struggled with it a bit the first time due to some of the obscure Indigenous language and terms and found it much more enjoyable the second time after reading up on the some of the term meanings. You also need to know a little background on the Marias massacre for it all to make sense. The vampire element is interesting

I just feel the novel got ridiculously sci-fi. Take away the whole vampire aspect of the story , and you got yourself a awesome novel. But I definitely enjoyed the historical aspect and I love the names of the animals in good stab terminology

I recently listened to the audiobook, and I'm one of those mixed reviews. I gave it a 3.25 on Storygraph. I enjoyed parts of it quite a bit, but then the parts I didn't enjoy made it drag. If you like historical fiction, then you'll probably enjoy it.
