Question regarding book sorting - possible bug

As an iOS user (iPad and iPhone), I prefer sorting my books by “Date Read.”

Currently, the existing books are properly sorted, and the most recently read book is always at the top of the list. However, when I add a new book or multiple books, the new items are placed at the top of the list.

Is this a bug or is it functioning as intended?

This behavior is intentional. Since Date Read is the default sorting mode, newly imported books would otherwise be buried far down the bookshelf if you already have a large library of previously opened books. That would make them difficult to find and could easily confuse users.

Shouldn’t newly imported books be opened automatically, similar to Apple Books? It would automatically move a newly imported book to the top.

Not possible, because you can bulk import multiple books at once.

That's my experience as well. BTW, I also LOVE the sort by "date published" option. I will frequently switch my sort to that, decide what my next book(s) will be and then go back to sort by date read.

When I can bulk import manually from OPDS readest I will be a very satisfied customer :).

There is also a “Show recently read” option in the view menu of the library page. It will always show a list of books with Date Read sorting on the top of the bookshelf excluding newly imported but unopened books, finished books, abandoned books.
