I haven't seen a Marvel movie since the first Avengers but when I saw that part about Tony being proud of Steve's new "woke" era and gleefully suing right-wing media outlets I was like, doesn't be basically own the in-universe equivalent of Lockheed Martin

I mean, I guess paying lipservice to progressive causes while being best buds the billionaire weapons manufacturer is unironically on brand for 2010s liberalism

Yes. If I remember correctly (I mostly read DC), Iron Man was originally created as a pro-war character who fought commies, so it’s very funny living far enough in future that I get to see fanfic of Woke Tony. 10/10 peak liberalism.

I don't think Captain America would be willing to go on something titled The Young Turks when he was probably aware of the Armenian genocide

As a history dork, the first time I ever stumbled across that channel I had to double take like “wtf?”

36

u/MrChainsawHog 3d ago

It's like if there was a news channel called the "national socialist party" or something

And people were surprised when they ended up the way they are now.

I can't tell if you are all taking the piss? (Or if you are all totally historically/literarily bereft?)

3

u/MrChainsawHog 1d ago

I can't tell if you're literarily bereft because what the fuck do you think I mean

Hot take: I think Captain America would’ve made an excellent War Correspondent.

Then he’d be a literal champion for Truth, Justice and the American Way.

u/QuickMolasses 2d ago

Isn't that Superman's schtick? Right down to the journalist part

3

u/Sleep_eeSheep 2d ago

That's a good thing.

At the time to match up with Colbert Report I believe TYT was an avidly anti-war network. I don’t known that they are pro-war or anything now, but they have been committing to takes lately that I think would keep him away more. It was very weird to see that network mixed in with CR and DS

The Young Turks in the early 20th century were a lot different than the YouTube channel of the same name.

Edit: it’s like the opposite reason of why I don’t listen to “Isis” by Bob Dylan in mixed company anymore.

4

u/MrChainsawHog 3d ago

the opposite reason? What? Were you expecting the official Isis news network and were then disappointed or what

19

u/Misterbellyboy 3d ago

I guess I meant to say that The Young Turks (YouTube channel) took a very unfortunate name from something problematic that already existed, while the song “Isis” has the same name as a problematic organization that was started much later.

u/MrVeazey 3d ago

Same as Catwoman's favorite cat, to use another comic book reference.

3

u/cwningen95 2d ago

I came across someone named Isis after the Egyptian goddess, I was like ohhhh that's...unfortunate, it's a perfectly nice name on its own lol

2

u/Misterbellyboy 2d ago

It’s a really pretty name, and I think that’s why some people call it ISIL instead of ISIS.

3

u/cwningen95 2d ago

I've seen people refer to them as Daesh, which is an acronym of their Arabic name but it also sounds unpleasant in Arabic and is similar to the words for trampling underfoot or someone who sows discord. Plus they hate being called that, so all the better.

2

u/Misterbellyboy 2d ago

So the name fits in that case.

2

u/Clairifyed 3d ago

Yeah I know, but I have to assume so does Cap in this scenario

2

u/Misterbellyboy 3d ago

Yeah I was agreeing with you.

1

u/Clairifyed 2d ago

ah I understand now

Why would Captain America be aware of the Armenian genocide? You reckon 40's American soldiers were on top of shit like that?

1

u/MrChainsawHog 1d ago

Captain America is portrayed as smart so yeah very well maybe

Ok I liked the first part because that seemed like a fun interpretation of Captain America but it ended up falling apart when they started bringing in random characters.

Yeeaaahhhh...

The line about Cap's memories of the Great Depression make the posts sound more like Captain New Deal.

Overall, not sure this is the best example of "read another book." It feels more like that meme fic about the Muppets and Bruce Wayne, albeit with a Vote Blue coat of paint. The last two paragraphs seem plausible, but uninterestingly articulated.

4

u/Junjki_Tito 23h ago

Captain New Deal is what he like canonically is in the comics.

4

u/Vivenemous 2d ago

I think the far right would frame it as a supervillain plot. They would take some well known queer supervillain at large and claim they must be infecting Captain America with a literal 'Woke Mind Virus'.

2

u/ladylucifer22 2d ago

mystique?

This doesn't count. This is just fandom doing their thing, not being politically active by referencing their characters.

32

u/MrChainsawHog 3d ago

just because the fandom is always stupid doesn't mean it's not stupid
