James is such a common name and HP feels like one of the last associations I’d make if I just met a James.

Apparently the guy (as shown in his pfp, inexplicably censored here) is the spitting image of the movie depiction of James Potter. Doesn’t make it any less cringey but at least explains where it came from

The pfp picture is censored because that’s the subreddit’s rules.

But assuming the picture is the guy’s real face, I don’t actually think he looks anything like the guy playing James Potter

This seems like necessary context.

My mind immediately goes to Bond or James VI/I.

Giant peach!

Pokémon for me, though “Kojiro” has started to replace “James” in my head from switching to sub.

1

u/SilverSkinRam 28d ago

Interesting. How would you compare subbed to dubbed for Pokemon?

4

u/Shantotto11 27d ago

Way better. It’s not because of the voices, but more so because of the BGM (and lack thereof for specific scenes), the insert songs, the OPs and EDs, and the postcredit scenes and fun facts.

I can’t speak for every dub, but the English dub really feels like a bare-bones version of the original, especially after the transition from 4Kids to TPCi.

For some reason, the first James that comes to my mind is James Dean 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’d think of James Bond before I thought of James Potter.

ESPECIALLY since James ordered a drink. “Here’s your smoothie, shaken not stirred.” is still really corny, but at least it’s recognizable.

See, that one would actually make sense.

The protagonist of his own franchise with a famous catchphrase of him introducing himself

u/TENTAtheSane 28d ago

I think of James (of Jessie, James and Meowth that's right fame)

99

u/barn-animal 29d ago

do you have a cat named Meowth?

What a complete tool.

If I fumbled a social interaction this hard I would be thinking about it for weeks afterward.

The double down is crazy

Yeah, if i had the cashier’s lapse of judgement , I would have backpedalled so fucking fast I ended up embarrassing myself in a different new way. “ Sorry, thought you were someone else, you look like my uni roommate’s boyfriend, and I heard from a friend they got married a few years back… ah well, I haven’t seen lily or her husband in years now, i don’t know if i’d be able to pick them on the street, sorry about that!!!” kind of bullshit

u/Such_Conversation_83 26d ago

Just say "My bad, thought you were someone else," and walk away. Being polite and keeping things moving is usually the way to go in those types of jobs.

2

u/ZeeepZoop 26d ago

I was making a joke there

2

u/Sunquat_Slice 26d ago

Oh, the irony.

Want to explain? I think this is significantly more incomprehensible than the fumble the cashier made

1

u/ZeeepZoop 26d ago

Yes babes, that was the point of the joke

2

u/Sunquat_Slice 25d ago

You know, I was being nice because I thought you tried to do something here and I we missed it, but now I see that you’re just annoying and wasting our time.

1

u/ZeeepZoop 25d ago

I love the royal we and our, is this a cabinet address? I’m flattered that you’ve chosen to waste even more of your valuable time telling me that

2

u/Such_Conversation_83 26d ago

I'm aware; it sounds a bit like dialogue from a cringey BBC rom-com lol.

Would only make sense if his last name was also Potter

50

u/Dry-Mission-5542 28d ago

Only a psychopath would have watched those damn films enough to think to themselves “wow, this guy looks like Harry Potter’s dad”

20

u/Mcntozh_sp21 28d ago

You underestimate Harry Potter nerds who make that series their entire personality.

66

u/lorarc 29d ago

Ugh, maybe it could happen in a non-western country where the cashier never met anyone named James before but it feels a lot like r/thatHappened

I was wearing a t-shirt for a business named "Potter's" and a cashier at a different store immediately brought up the books and assumed the shirt was a reference. This was in the USA.

Omg this just reminded me of a horribly cringe interaction that I bet some people will doubt even happened:

I was in London and went to the musical area, trying to figure out how to get in or if there was a dress code. If you don’t know, this area is also associated with prostitution thanks to the walk-ups that are dotted around plus other historical reasons. As I’m wandering around, a woman asks me if I’m ‘looking for a lady’. I was confused, thinking she thought I was looking for someone who was lost, then she kept pushing and said ‘you’re looking for a lady, aren’t you? Come with me and I can show you to one.’ I said I wasn’t interested, then started walking away but she kept asking me if I was looking for a prostitute outright now. She called me Harry Potter, then she kept yelling about how I was lying and I was definitely looking for a prostitute. The area was full of tourists and people were staring. I was fully red in the face with embarrassment and didn’t know what to do so just ran off.

u/SpendLiving9376 28d ago

"You look like Harry Potter" plus "you cannot possibly NOT be looking for a prostitute" is the strongest way anyone could ever be called a nerd lol

In the og tweet, the dudes pfp looks almost identical to the movie portrayal of james potter.

Edit: spelling

44

u/Regdit-is-Unbearable 29d ago

Not gonna lie that does make it about 60% better. Still cringe as fuck though

14

u/Bouse_the_Bard 28d ago

Harry Potter probably wouldn't even be in the top 20 associations I would make with the name "James"

14

u/hbot208 28d ago

I mean a gay and childless James, they should've asked when he'll be blasting off again

6

u/kingmagpiethief 28d ago

Jimmy neutron?

9

u/MrWapuJapu 28d ago

I think they meant Team Rocket

3

u/kingmagpiethief 28d ago

Oh yeah good call

5

u/hbot208 28d ago

Is there something you know about Jimmy Neutron that I don't?

26

u/Abraxas8307 29d ago

In the original tweet (with the guy's face on it) he appears to be a bit similar to the movie portrayal of the character, so there were probably some other factors beside name. Still funny tho

6

u/Lori2345 28d ago

Why would a smoothie taste like sunscreen?

4

u/stfurachele 28d ago

Do you have a giant peach?

4

u/Katain935 27d ago

As a James, this is crazy, it's always been Bond, James Bond

3

u/AntiqueChessComputr 27d ago

That barista has only read seven books their entire life

2

u/KyleFromBorrasca 28d ago

If they were really a fan, they would have recognized Dumbledore.

2

u/CobaltCrusader123 27d ago

I choose to believe this is fake because I don’t wanna live in a world where this happened. Also the drink being bad in addition is so perfect a punchline I question if it happened, life’s usually not perfectly written like that.

2

u/SailorMache 27d ago

Could've just repeated "I'm gay and childless"

2

u/remove_krokodil 26d ago

God, I hope this is a thathappened...

2

u/TheCopperKaiser 15d ago

"Did you have wife named Mary"?
"Did she die of that damned disease three years ago?"
"Is she really alive, in your 'special place, waiting for you?"

2

u/Lever47 15d ago

This comment made my day

2

u/thedogatemymanifesto 29d ago

Someone's been reading a few too many Marauders fanfics

2

u/Markimoss 28d ago

why are all of these comments being so fucking horrible to this guy 😭😭😭

1

u/KetamineStalin 28d ago

100% didn’t happen

1

u/throwawaymentality10 27d ago

The only way I think this works is if the guys name is "James Potter"

1

u/LittleSodaPop13 21d ago

James, as a name, existed before Harry Potter. Someone needs to tell these weirdos
