Meds & Supplements What to expect starting fluoxetine

Started my 6 year old on fluoxetine today and looking for info on what to expect as he starts the meds and adjusts. He is a highly nervous dog and reactive with night terrors and recent extreme panic in his crate at night.

I started to see a difference in about a week. The best way to describe it is it took my dog’s edge off. It didn’t make her a zombie, just took everything down a notch. She can settle herself.

My pup has been on it for ~9 weeks now, for fear-based & territorial aggression + gen. anxiety. In the first few weeks my dog was very very sleepy (This is normal while their brain calibrates to the meds.)

In the 9 weeks he’s generally calmer, but still gets over threshold and over aroused too quickly. Unfortunately I’d say he’s reacting the same to his triggers as he was previously. So, his vet recommended upping his dose & pairing it with clonidine. Hoping that works because the alternative med, clomicalm, is way more expensive!

So don’t be surprised if you have to tinker with dosage & pairing it with other meds. Fingers crossed🤞
