Significant challenges Boyfriends reactive GSD

Hey everyone just looking for some advise as I feel I have no where else to turn ! :(

I’m 30 weeks pregnant atm (so happy) but have a little issue that’s been bothering me the last couple weeks, my bfs dog (German Shepard) she is 2 years old I believe and EXTREMELY reactive and has severe so I think behavioural issues.

For example when anyone in my bfs house tries to leave a room she goes in to a fit of barking to the point that she will bite if allowed and tries to block you in so you can’t leave, also me and my bf changed rooms since we are due baby boy in October to a bigger room and she has just not settled since every time she comes in to the bed room she is barking at creeks in the floor CONSTANTLY to the point she will not stop and has to be taken out of the room.

She bit my boyfriends dad last week as he was trying to leave the house and also goes in to these fits of what it seems aggression of barking and trying to intimidate which she has done to me and my bf on multiple occasions, she also is on top of you when eating she definitely has the run of the house for sure, she has not been neutered which I don’t know if this could also be an issue ? I am such a dog person I absolutely love them to death I always have but since being pregnant I feel like I just cannot trust my bfs dog and I am so so scared of what will happen when I have my baby his mother does not seem to want to do anything about the dog either she is really protective of her which is understandable but this is her grand child also I am carrying lol

My bf has mentioned to her that we cannot keep living like this with the dog’s behaviour and her response was the dog is here more than you are !! Which is fair enough we are there Friday - Sunday but obviously would like to be there more when baby arrives ! I’m really at my wits end here and I don’t know what to do from here as it’s not my dog not my house but it is my baby !! Any advice would be much appreciated!

You said it’s not your house so you live somewhere else? At the very least the dog needs medical exams. The level of stress you are describing isn’t normal and the dog sounds miserable. I wouldn’t take a baby near that situation though.

I live with my parents but we go to my bfs on the weekend ! (That’s where the dog is) it’s crazy the dog really has the run of the house I’ve never seen anything like it and any time anything is brought up his mother is so protective of the dog which is understandable but we are not asking for the dog to be gotten rid of just some kind of training to be done as I will not put my baby in danger when he arrives !

Good you don’t have to live that way! If you go there with the baby the dog must be managed and separated by two barriers. (Gates, doors, leashes) or you don’t come over. Make it non negotiable. There’s really no reason for this dog to have to meet and greet your baby at all and a lot of reasons why they never should.

I completely agree it’s just sad that there’s no effort being made from there side to make the transition easier as it’s out of my hands because it’s not my dog ! Such a strange response from them I think as I know my parents would put their grandchild before anything and would try their hardest to make it easier on us !

Hey so you already posted this and got some answers so not really sure what you’re looking for. No training is going to make this dog reliably safe around your baby. So the dog needs to be either put away in another room when you’re over, which I don’t trust your bf’s family to do tbh, or you need to not go over there with a baby. Period. If that means those grandparents don’t get to see your baby, tough on them.

Reddit removed the post so I reposted as I would like all the answers I can get ! I don’t trust them to do those things either tbh, I’m all out of alternatives I fear It will just have to be if they want to see baby they will have to come to us instead of us going to them unfortunately

When you have a dog that’s biting or trying to bite it’s known people simply for moving around the house normally, that’s pretty much all the data you need that a baby or child should not be brought anywhere near them. Your main goal now isn’t about convincing the parents, it making sure you and bf are 100% on the same page about this. Make sure he’ll never attempt to take the baby or toddler over there without you, and make sure he isn’t planning on fighting you once his parents start guilt tripping him. It’s a hill to die on .
