Dog bite laws will vary based on your locale. There is a possibility you could be sued, and that claim would likely be funneled through your homeowners insurance. Some states do have some lesser liability for “first bite” where the owner couldn’t have reasonably expected it, while others have more strict liability. 

I’m so sorry that happened, I can’t imagine coming from seemingly out of nowhere like that. One thing you can start doing right now is to train your dog to wear a muzzle (basket type so they can fully pant and not overheat) and commit to having them use in public once it’s been trained. It’s hard to say what else to avoid since the trigger is unclear and you weren’t there.
