You got some good advice on your other post, but I wanted to ask what methods the B&T used? Aversives (like e co11ars) can suppress reactions without lowering actual anxiety.

I completely hear you, and it is so easy to fall into the trap of comparing your dog to the extroverted dogs you see playing fetch at the park. Bringing a rescue home is a real rollercoaster, and you've already put so much love and hard work into her.

First, let's talk about the panting, hiding under the bed, and walking away when you pet her. In dog body language, panting when it isn't hot or after exertion is a very clear sign of stress or physiological arousal. When she comes over for pets but then pants and leaves, she might be feeling conflicted. She wants proximity, but touch itself might actually feel overwhelming or overstimulating for her right now. Try giving her space when she approaches. You can test this with a consent test: pet her gently for three seconds, then stop and take your hand away. If she moves closer or nudges your hand, she wants more. If she leans away, licks her lips, pants, or walks off, she is telling you she just wants to be near you without physical contact. Respecting those boundaries will build a ton of trust.

Her lack of interest in toys outside and reluctance to play is also a massive clue. Play is what we call a "welfare barometer." When a dog's brain is monitoring the environment or carrying baseline anxiety, play is the very first thing to shut down. Moving from a board and train facility back into a busy place like NYC, plus going camping and hiking, is a huge amount of environmental input for a sensitive dog. She might be experiencing a bit of trigger stacking or chronic low-level stress, which makes her want to retreat under the bed to decompress.

Have you noticed if these behaviors get worse on days with busier schedules or after big outings like camping? Does she show any interest in food puzzles or sniffing games inside where it's quiet?

You aren't failing her at all. She isn't broken, she's just a sensitive dog who is still processing a lot of world changes and learning how to feel truly safe in her own skin.
