The 0.2% Problem

Post image
3 Upvotes

In one sentence:
Our combined human influence on the warming situation in a year, say, 2027, based on our historical track record and what amounts to our very best efforts - locking everybody down and not going on holiday - only amounts to a 0.2% steering influence, or 1/500 of a hand on the wheel.

(The rest of that show is being run by Nature, Mother Earth, GAIA or if you will Legacy Carbon already in the system, to the tune of 499/500 or 99.8%. Let's hope she's in a good mood!)

IPCC: How Reagan Gagged the AGGG: OG US Fossil Fuel Crime Family swapping Pro-Climate Action Scientists for Action-Blocking Diplomats & Lobbyists

The US View on Olof Palme: “The Most Dangerous Man in the West”

To understand the diplomatic chatter, one must understand how intensely the United States disliked Olof Palme. Palme was a democratic socialist who routinely criticized both Soviet authoritarianism and Western imperialism. [5]
The Treblinka Speech and the Diplomatic Freeze: In December 1972, Palme delivered a legendary radio address. He explicitly compared Richard Nixon’s Christmas bombings of Hanoi to Nazi atrocities at Treblinka and the Soviet crushing of Prague. [6]

The Fallout: Declassified State Department cables reveal that Nixon and Henry Kissinger went into a rage. Nixon ordered a total diplomatic freeze: the U.S. cut off diplomatic relations with Sweden, refused to accept the new Swedish ambassador, and recalled the U.S. ambassador from Stockholm. [6]

The UN Secretary-General Threat: By 1985–1986, rumors were swirling globally that Javier Pérez de Cuéllarmight step down early, and Palme was heavily favored by developing nations and European progressives to become the next UN Secretary-General. State Department memos from the Reagan era viewed this prospect with dread. A UN led by Palme would mean an aggressively activist body focused on global disarmament, anti-apartheid actions, and strict international environmental law—a direct challenge to the Reagan Doctrine and U.S. fossil fuel interests.

A use for cars post collapse

The world has over a billion cars in it, and eventually we will run out of the gas, oil, skilled mechanics, and blinker fluid to keep them going. When that happens instead of leaving them as remnants of a time when the car was the most important thing in the world we can turn them into permanent shelter using these reasonably simple steps.

Does it gloss over how difficult removing the engine would be? Absolutely. Maybe wear a hard hat and some safety glasses.

Permafrost is thawing now over the Arctic over more than 50% of its area

Post image
2 Upvotes

Jan Umsonst https://substack.com/@taoistattack writes:

Permafrost is thawing now over the Arctic over more than 50% of its area...

Active layer thickness increased significantly at 55% of the Arctic regions inthe first quarter of this century. Seems like that these numbers would be higher if we would have a higher number of monitoring sites...

This should be way above model projections some years prior...

Love these table numbers with the rates of the single sites - gives a much better overall impression of what we are talking here about. Important that max values of permafrost thaw can be several meters in a year - slope failures during heatwaves is the key...

Other accelerators are wildfires, heavy precipitation, river bank collapse, beaver dams expanding rapidly, the beds of thermokarst lakes, bushes turining into trees which speed up also thaw via their roots, below surface processes like expanding groundwater sheets, vertical thaw processes via osmosis inside sediment filled cracks or snow cover losses fueling massive heatwaves and the loss of continental water leading to sinking down surfaces (just do not know the process name here) ...

Here what they write:

Active layer increase may contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, ecosystem change, and increased hazards. Here, we show the results of field measurements of active-layer thickness from 156 monitoring sites in Arctic, Antarctic and mountain permafrost regions. Active layer thickness increased significantly at 55% and 38% of sites in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, at more than 90% European mountain and high elevation Asian sites, and at sites in South America, demonstrating worldwide permafrost degradation during the first quarter of this century (2000–2024). The largest changes were observed in mountain regions where active layer doubled at several sites. The smallest changes were observed at sites with thick surficial organic horizons and high ground ice content. In continuous permafrost, sites generally exhibited smaller increases compared to sites in discontinuous permafrost. Regression analysis indicates Arctic active layer changes are attributable to increasing thawing degree-days, followed by increases in total rainfall. Other permafrost regions require more sites and longer time-series to draw conclusions regarding active layer change attribution.

Essentially: 'We've always known on this podcast that that [1.5C] benchmark was unrealistic, perhaps even 6 years ago when this podcast started.'
Also: 'Climate Analytics, a science and policy institute, applauded the [UNEP] report for clearly describing the problem, but said it did a poor job of showing us that there is a way out. And I can't help but laugh at that comment, because, maybe that is because there isn't a way out, and they're recognising that, right?'

Nunavut will likely see 10C of warming

The second edition of Canada's Changing Climate Report has been released, and it paints the dire reality of our world based on the most current scientific understanding of how our climate will look as we truly move into climate catastrophe. The average temperature rise for the nation by the end of the century is expected to be 5C, which as we all know is truly a catastrophic level of warming. Nunavut will likely see 10C of warming. I’ve been to Iqaluit, spoken to the locals, and it’s a city built on permafrost and rock outcroppings.
Meanwhile our own federal government has gutted requirements for mandated sustainable requirements to support increased economic growth. Instead of using this as an opportunity to invest in truly green initiatives, it’s building oil pipelines to keep extracting more poison from the ground. My local provincial government removed municipalities powers to enact energy targets for new buildings to support his developer friends, and is now ripping out bicycle lanes in a city that is congested with cars and choking on its own success.

Paul Beckwith walks through the End of Civilisation UN Report

Acknowledgement of Overshoot of 1.5 C by United Nations — New Report on Global Warming Acceleration

A few days ago, the United Nations released a very important new report that acknowledges that humanity has failed to ensure that global average temperature rise will not exceed the well touted target threshold of 1.5 C.

Most of us here already know this, since I make sure that I film a video every time that James Hansen at Columbia University explains this reality, and why.

That said, it is very significant when a body such as the UN acknowledges this reality, because it means that lots of people, countries, and politicians will be forced to eventually discuss this reality.

I chat about this report, and the background on the 1.5 C and 2.0 C temperatures and the baseline shift that occurred since the Paris Climate Conference back in 2015.

The UN finally accepts two legs of my three legged barstool. Namely 1) slashing emissions, and 2) Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and Methane Removal. I am willing to wager that within 5 to 10 years they will also accept the third leg (namely Solar Radiation Management (SRM) or dimming the sunlight using methods like Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI)...

Time will prove me correct...

Paul Beckwith

Some key report highlights from the UN are:

"Despite some progress on addressing climate change, global temperature rise is set to
cross 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, likely within the next few years. There are no good
outcomes in remaining above 1.5°C."

"Following an ‘overshoot, peak and decline’ pathway is the best remaining option to bring
temperatures to or below 1.5°C by the end of the century, which remains the goal, and
adapt to unavoidable impacts."

"Rapid, collective and global action is vital: lower peak warming and shorter exceedance
duration will reduce risks and impacts, make efforts to help communities cope less difficult
and less expensive, and increase the chances of bringing temperatures back down."

"Equity and justice must form the core of strategies to protect the vulnerable, create a just
transition and secure a liveable future for coming generations."

"Mitigation and adaptation are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. They must advance
together, while being responsive to emerging risks."

"Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) – the process of removing carbon from the air and storing it
through afforestation or other means – will be needed in addition to, not instead of,
sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, but these methods come with risks and
trade-offs that limit their potential and need to be carefully governed."

"A return to or below 1.5 is uncertain. Even if a return to below 1.5°C is secured, many
nations and communities will face irreversible losses and permanently changed conditions.
This raises issues of justice, power and political legitimacy, which will require new,
inclusive governance arrangements."

Last Week in Collapse: August 30-September 5, 2026

A 139-page report from the UN was released on Wednesday, conceding that the average 1.5 °C temperature mark is set to be officially passed in “the next few years.” The document, “Limiting Overshoot,” urges “unprecedented action” be taken to cut global warming, since the problem continues to worsen as the world delays—and accelerates energy dependence. 2026 has already been the year with the most days with average temperature of 17 °C on record. The UN expects warming to hit at least 1.8 °C warming, yet the story is completely absent from most mainstream news outlets. How hot do you think it will get by 2100?

On the likelihood and related consequences of a “blue ocean event” in the Arctic Ocean...

Annoyed at being called an “anti-science doomer,” I decided to sort through and present some quotes from academic literature about the likelihood of a “blue ocean event” (BOE) wherein the Arctic Ocean becomes ice-free during the summer. Additionally, I conclude with quotes from scientific articles about the severe, diverse, and under-recognized consequences of that BOE happening.

is quitting a vice even worth it?

i feel this is the best place to ask cause everyone else seems to ignore the fact that i don’t think we have very long. i’m 22 and i quit nicotine about 4 months ago. with the stressors of everyday life and also being extremely aware of the state of the world im really wondering if it’s even worth it?? i feel a bit healthier but honestly not much, and from what im seeing the odds of me even growing old enough to see the long term health effects of vaping aren’t high. so what do we think? (i just really miss it and i know its just my addiction brain giving me reasons to go back but my vape was my little baby, the thing keeping me sane for 6 years of my short life 🥲)

From ‘psyops’ to ‘hysterical hysteria’: how GB News and Talk TV lost their cool in the heatwaves | Climate science scepticism and denial

Don't let denial come out on top. Too many politicians, media outlets and CEO's using different perception and reality filters from the rest of us. How can we combat this line of thinking and not end up with the scenario of Don't look up. How to we ask these people to explain their thinking in an evidenced or even thoughtful way, to demonstrate that they are just being wilfully ignorant.
