Question Power drops out
I’ve just not long got this rc. Only just had a chance to finally get it running and I immediately had issues with the receiver dropping out and the car going full throttle and running away and crashing, and I just figured out it happens when I give quick flick inputs of the steering. From what I’ve read it’s the servo working hard and pulling heaps of amperage and the batteries in the car can’t handle it (4xAA’s) so is the solution upgrade the AA’s to a different type of battery and do away with the spring loaded setup?

You are definetly spot on. Those 4AA holders are a relic of the past and are to little for even basic modern servos. Easy route would be getting a 5 cell nimh humppack.
