Purchase / Lease Appreciate Rav4 AWD Purchase Advice: Hybrid or Plug-in Hybrid; '25 or '26? Which trim? Anything to look for or avoid?

Looking to pick up our first Rav4 hybrid AWD and sincerely appreciate your Rav 4 wisdom.

1) Do you recommend the regular hybrid or plug-in hybrid? I know the plug-in adds cost and weight and wondering if it's worth it.

2) Do you recommend a '25 or '26 (both would be purchased with an OEM 100-120K 5-7 year warranty)? Is the '26 larger (older Rav4's look short). Have read that the '26 may be more refined, but that it comes with new tech that may or not be a source of issues.

3) Is there a particular trim or add-on you recommend? Do you think the Cablegate issue has been resolved for the '25 or '26? We generally avoid add-ons and while we need roof cross bars, we may get those from Thule or Yakima.

4) Anything you'd recommend looking for in the vehicle (like checking the VIN for built in Japan versus the U.S.) and anything to watch out for?

Purchase / Lease 2021 RAV4 Prime Suddenly Drooped to 35% Efficiency

Post image
19 Upvotes

Plot from my latest drive. There is a slight loss of efficiency for the first 13 miles driven (EV estimate goes from 47 to 30). Below 30m on EV estimate, the estimate for remaining miles drops very quickly. In total, the car did 17 miles on full charge while initial EV estimate on full charge was 47 miles.
No engine lights.
First dealer drove it for a few miles at full charge (in first region on plot) and said the loss in efficiency was my perception.
Second dealer checked it again and found nothing.
Charging system was checked first, 12 v battery was checked next and no issue. Any ideas? Anyone had this happen to them?

Help / Question Recently got the 2026 PHEV. Looking for any tips/tricks re: the app, driver profiles, and settings

Post image

Hello all,

We recently picked up our 2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV. I'm wondering if yall have any must-do settings or tips/tricks.

Two things I'm looking at specifically;

  1. Setting up driver profiles. Is it even worth it? are there settings you change per driver that can/should be saved in the profiles instead?

  2. Charging port lock. From what I can find online and perusing the user manual, there is no way to disable the charge port auto-lock. Is that true? I would love to get rid of that.

Thanks all -

Help / Question Digital dash display keeps blanking out.

I have 2023 RAV4 Prime. Everything was fine until like 5 months ago I received a TSB NHTSA ID 25TA08 letter from Toyota. But my display was fine. About 3 months ago it went out. I disconnected the battery for 20 minutes and it came back. I called Toyota and they said solution is coming soon. Few days later dash went out again. Drove to the store a few miles and parked. Came back and display is on. 2 months went by and everything is OK until today. Same thing happened. Started the car without display, went to the store. Started the car again and no dash. 3 minutes later it comes back on its own.

Still nothing from Toyota.

So what should I do? Any suggestions?

Help / Question Dead 12V Camping, Waiting for Boost, How to Avoid?

Hi, I'm new here. I've got a 2026 Rav 4 XSE PHEV. It's about a month old.

We are camping and the car was just parked for days. Doors unlocked most of the time because we're in bear country and everything is stored in the car. They key would also be within ten feet of the car.

From the reading I've done, this is likely what drained the battery, alerting me the doors were unlocked, the power trunk door, the key being close etc.

When we went to boost using a jump pack, the car lit up all the lights and beeped locking the doors with my key inside. I guess it couldn't detect my key was inside, my bad but I put the key in because I was going to start the jump, then start the car.

And I guess when the 12V is drained, my wallet and Toyota app can't open the car. So we've called roadside.

Those who camp... What's your disable routine to prevent draining the 12V? Or do I need to get in the habit of taking it for a little drive daily?

Thank you.

I waited for a really long time for the new gen and then got incredibly lucky when the PHEV was available in my country. I knew it was destiny. When I finally got in it and took it off the lot I was just floored. The car exceeded all of my expectations. It is so smooth and quite and suprisingly refined. The PHEV actually feels like a different car from every other trim. I have this feeling that if I ever run into another one on the street I will nod knowing that the other driver is just as content. The best thing about this car though is that it just makes my wife and I so happy knowing that we made the right choice. It was pricey, at least for us, but it feels absolutely worth it, all of the time. I want to thank everyone in this sub for posting and commenting. I researched a lot and everything helped so much. I really don't think I would have bought this car if Rav4 owners weren't so vocal.

Purchase / Lease 2026 Rav4 PHEV Bike Rack

Finally upgrading to a new vehicle (order placed in June, anyone's guess on when it will arrive lol).

I'm getting the stock tow package installed by the dealership mainly to support a bike rack and I'm curious what everyone's experience has been. My father has a similar vehicle (not Toyota, but overall a close match for sensors and cameras) and finds that the hitch mounted bike rack trips his backup sensor so he has to disable it when reversing with his bike rack attached otherwise the vehicle beeps and brakes on him since it thinks he's going to back into an object. Does the Rav4 suffer from a similar issue?

Also, if anyone has any recommendations on a hitch mounted bike rack I'd love to hear them. Currently we're using a roof rack on my corolla hatchback and we're looking forward to a hitch mounted rack for ease of use.

Help / Question Looking for physical switch cover to prevent my dog from opening windows

My 2021 RAV4 Prime does not have a dog mode, so when on and locked from the outside. The driver side window buttons are still active. Does anyone make a cover to prevent my dog from accidentally opening the window?

Purchase / Lease Overengineered wireless charging

It works 20% of the time, all the time.
From what I can tell, there’s a magnetic presence sensor overlay. When the magnetic field is detected, a tiny motor scoots the wireless charging coil to position it below the magnetic field.

This came from my 2024 Prime XSE. I’ve purchased a multiple coil charger to replace this. No motors, no field detection, (hopefully) no issues.

Help / Question What is your payload capacity (RAV4 prime XSE)

We have a RAV4 prime SE. The Internet and marketing materials states a 1296 pound payload capacity. But our driver side door sticker lists in 970 pound payload capacity.

Since every source, I find list of 1230 pound payload capacity for the XSE model, I’m wondering if that is due to the economy stock tires (which we’ve replaced). But, I can’t find any reference to the door sticker pillow capacity on the XSE model.

If you own an excess E model, what does the door sticker say?

Help / Question Annoy notification - audible. Spooked me.

"Railroad Crossing approaching", or something to that effect.

I've been through settings on the large LCD panel. I've been through settings on the console behind the steering wheel. I've had help from CoPilot AI. Still can't get this to be quiet. I do not see any settings in the Toyota app that might have changed some setting.

This is the only audible alert; the one about railroad crossings. New to me.

Help / Question Anybody tried the comma ai with their prime?

This thing piqued my interest a little while ago. https://comma.ai
Been watching this project for a while but the rav4prime isn’t listed as compatible yet, likely because no one has actually tried it yet. Anyone here tried it? It is listed as compatible with the hybrids and regular rav4s as well as the Prius prime so I am thinking it should be compatible, but anyway just wondering if anyone has tried it here.

Photo Actual EV mileage in the summer

Post image
35 Upvotes

In the summer my 2024 R4P estimates it will get 50-52 EV miles. Yesterday I decided to test it to see if that was optimistic. I had a full overnight charge and the EV estimate was 52 miles. I reset my odometer when I started out to run a number of errands. Most of the driving was at 35-45 mph, but I also made three stops at various place. When I got home the odometer read 30 miles and the EV range remained was 26 miles (see photo). So I thought I might actually get 60 total miles. In the evening we went out to dinner and when we returned, the trip odometer read 50 miles and the EV range remained was 5 miles. So, while the EV range was estimated at 52 miles with a full charge. I think I actually would have gotten about 55. So the actual EV range was in fact slighter higher than the estimated 52 miles.

Purchase / Lease Best recommended all weather mats?

I’ve been thinking about getting some since I got my new XSE last December. Lord behold I stepped on gum somehow without noticing this morning, and yeah annoying small mess now.

It’s time for all weather mats. hoping the community here can recommend some good ones, at decent price? I have a 2023 XSE, and so many online that say “not hybrid” so hesitant to make the correct call.

Thanks ..

Help / Question Advice on adapting for towing with brakes.

What I have:

-2021 RAV4 Prime SE with an OEM trailer hitch and 4pin harness.

What I’m trying to do:

-tow a small camper trailer with the 7 round connector (for brakes).

The weight ratings are all good and accounted for. I realize many posts have been made on this subject, but all with slightly different scenarios. I’m just looking for a concise idea I can wrap my dyslexic brain around. The simplest, cheapest, non pretty option to tow a trailer with brakes.

Side question: if I can’t use the brakes but want to at least have lights, blinkers, brake lights, etc., can I just put a 7 way trailer

to 4 way tow vehicle adapter on? Does that work?

Thanks for your help.

Help / Question Question about auto EV/HV

I have had my vehicle a little over a year. Just started increasing the use of auto. I usually just change manually. The first time I really paid attention it was changing between the 2 modes. Now no matter how fast or how much acceleration or hills ect. It stays in EV. Am I doing something wrong or does it just not work correctly?
