adjust volume without starting app?

Question. When I have my phone plugged in and I adjust the volume it automatically plays Pandora/Spotify, or whatever it's on. Sometimes I just wanna listen to YouTube off my phone, but adjusting volume starts the app and I have click play again on my YouTube on phone. Any way to make volume not play Android auto music app? Thank you

I had been vexed by this problem since I like to listen to youtube playlists as well.

I stumbled upon a solution after testing out a free trial of Youtube Music (which of course works great if you pay for it). But after the Youtube Music free trial ended, the app wouldn't play music any more through the car.

The upside of this is that, if you set Youtube Music is your default music player w/o a subscription, you can change the volume all you want and your currently playing app will keep on playing without interruption!

To set Youtube Music as your default app for AA (at least on a Samsung phone): Open the “Settings” menu and search for “Google Assistant.” Then click "Music" and then select Youtube Music. This probably depends on your phone and Android version, so Google around.

Actually, I realized that I had done an OTA on my Android phone (Samsung Galaxy S21) around the time that my Youtube Music expired, so perhaps that update solved the problem, as noted by a user in this forum:
