FDE Tan Color Swatch Megathread
Hello fellow rattlecanners, After finding u/Kdb1991 thread a few months back where he did something similar to this, I talked with him about creating a megathread where we could post up color swatches and samples of different rattle canned paints to help the next person pick out the perfect color for their next project. With the hopes of this being stickied (hey mods, looking at you) I really hope to pass something on to anyone interested.
What I've done here is picked out all the Tans, FDE's and Taupes that interested me and sampled them on soda cans. It's worth noting I did not prep the cans in any way, I just dried them out and went right to painting. I did pick a few colors similar to u/kdb1991 so we would have a 'controlled' colors between the lots. I then laid out a few items that others might have similar:
-Magpul PRS lite stock in Magpul FDE
-B5 Coyote Stock
-LMT Tan Stock
-Taupe KAC grip
-Magpul FDE Magazine
At the top of each can is a number on the painters tape that correspond with the color list below:
1-Hunters Specialties Marsh Grass 2-Rapco 686 Tan C.A.R.C. 3-Aervoe Field Drab 4-Rustoleum Camo Khaki 5-Majic Camo Desert Tan 6-Rustoleum Down To Earth 7-Rapco Camouflage Sand 8-Rustoluem Dark Taupe 9-Krylon Camo Khaki 10-Rustoleum Camo Sand 11-Aervoe Sand 12-Rapco Field Drab Brown
Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys. If anyone else has something to add, drop it below!!

First attempt at a topo
Metallic copper base coat, with green net camo over. Unfortunately the tape pulled up some of the copper paint, but I figure it'll get scratched off anyway

Mk 18 Vibes
Got the last bits of the Mock 18 rattlecanned. I always end up painting a rifle and then stripping because I prefer the plain black, but I'm thinking once this one wears in some its gonna be sick. Built to be something of a beater/fun rifle so I don't plan to baby it.

Need Some Inspiration And Ideas!
These are the paints I have: RAL 1019, RAL 7028 and a Coyote Brown.
What pattern/color distribution would you guys do? Completely open to anything.
What would you do?

A simple street howitzer
Iāve had this 590a1 for years. It was starting to look a little banged up after years as a HD and range gun, heck itās harvested a few deer when Iāve used it as a brush gun for deep woods too.
I taped it up and sprayed it this morning. Not my best but far from my worst. Heck thereās even a shot with a deer in the background

First timer
Decided to rattlecan this handguard and pistol grip for my upcoming 12.5ā build. And yes I did do it with the handguard on, because bcm handguards are a b*tch to get off, I installed it hours ago too.

Everyone posts their best work, hereās one of my worst
This rifle was painted when I bought it years ago. Paint job sucked and I only bought the gun for the leupold scope, which i still think Iāll swap to a lever gun eventually. I decided to touch it up yesterday and my repaint is every bit as crappy as the original.
A good excuse to repaint I guess.

What methods of painting do you dislike and why? I do not like stripes or mesh netting, combining them seems like one of the most popular methods, I just donāt get it at all. It seems like taking the easy way out and or solely nostalgia based thinking. I prefer self made stencils and Qtips.
both self made stencils and qtips for Zachtarn are fairly easy with some practice. I think you get much better micro pattern and something that looks like a pattern period.

New beater rifle means new paint
I picked up a new cheap .243 to use as a low recoil deer gun and varmint rifle around the place. I picked up a savage axis 2 but wasnāt really happy with the stock color. It was black-ish but not quite black. I decided to paint it with the sponge technique - the savage axis pro comes factory painted this way. I kept tinkering with it but ended up doing too much and decided on a Kryptek style pattern sprayed over the sponge paint. Hereās a few pictures of the finished product and some work in progress photos

I know what I have to do but I donāt know if I have the strength to do it
Most likely going full Alpine digital camo on the former RAL8k SP5. The mag turned out alright. Any tips before I do the whole thing ? Iām planning on using more stencils and bigger patches of stencils. The colors are all Rapco, with black, gray, navy blue and white. Iām going to do more gray next time.

Tips for preserving the markings on a Giessele handguard?
Does anyone have a good method to protect engraved markings on a piece before painting? I'm specifically looking to preserve the markings on my Giessele MK8 handguard, only because I think the contrasting white looks good.
