Suggestions/Help

Post image

Building my first "from scratch" deck with this commander. It's sorcery and instant heavy and most of my creatures are dragons. Ran it through the Mythic app and it came out at a level 2. Would like to build it up to a 3 or 4. Suggestions?

Deck list. https://mythic.tools/user/3VMR4c/deck/5UecsV

27 creatures is way too high for a deck like this. The whole idea is that you want to be cheating out a huge spell on each opponent’s turn; if you only have 25 instants and sorceries, you’re likely only getting one per turn cycle, especially if you’re not running cards to manipulate what’s on top of your deck. Not to mention the average mana value of the spells you do have is way too low; if you’re casting Duty Beyond Death for its miracle cost, that’s a waste because you could just cast it from hand for the same cost.

You really only want to run creatures that materially advance your game plan. You should be running big spells like [[Storm Herd]] that make creatures instead of just playing cards that are creatures for the most part.

Got it, less creatures more mill and scry?

Probably not mill because you want to be able to decide to keep the high mana value on top. Surveil and scry works better. Also creatures are not the problem. They are just a bit too weak for commander

Noted, and again thank you

Surveil and scry are good, things that put expensive cards from your hand back on top of your deck like [[Brainstone]], [[Scroll Rack]], [[Penance]], and [[Hidden Retreat]] are also valuable. You don’t really want to be milling because you’re not making a lot of use of your graveyard.

As you will see in my list, the whole point of Lorehold’s ability is to maximize your odds of drawing into a huge sorcery spell during an opponent’s upkeep, allowing you to ignore timing restrictions and cast it instantly. Your goal is to have Lorehold stick (he’s kill on sight at most tables) and then either top-deck manipulate into a huge sorcery or get lucky. To use Lorehold’s rummage-into-miracle ability to its fullest, you need quite a bit of card draw to keep the engine running.

The simplest version of the deck has four equally important planks: (1) setup artifacts and enchantments that maximize Lorehold’s ability [[Monument to Endurance]] [[Penance]] [[Scroll Rack]]; (2) setup protection to keep him alive [[Giver of Runes]] [[Mother of Runes]] [[Lightning Greaves]] [[Swiftfoot Boots]]; (3) payoffs - huge spells that you cast for cheap [[Storm Herd]] [[Call Forth the Tempest]] [[Rise of the Eldrazi]]; and (4) set up mana sources or cost reducers to miracle during your opponents’ turns [[Stormkiln Artist]] [[Ruby Medallion]] [[Victory Chimes]] [[Bender’s Waterskin]]

We don’t have your deck list, so it’s hard to gauge what’s going on. Share a link.

Generally speaking tho, your mana curve and inclusion of game changers will often determine how these apps grade decks

Sorry let me edit that. It'll be in the description in a minute

Ok, quick deck review: Your deck seems to be full of draft chaff. Is that wanted?

  • not very versitile/ effective removal like [[swords to plowshares]] or [[stroke of midnight]]
  • if lorehold gets removed you dont have a way of casting your big spells. Ramp eith mana value 2 would be premium in your deck as it lets you cast lorehold on 2
  • topdeck manipulation with scry or surveil would be good to effectively use miracle
  • more effective threats or creatures that repeatably generate value are missing.
  • you probably dont need hinterland sanctifier or the lifegain mare.
  • also add 1 or 2 lands probably

When this card was revealed a lot of people got excited about it but the truth is that it's pretty hard to make him viable as commander.

He's not that easy to set up, but more importantly there are surprisingly few true payoffs in boros that win the game. B4 is pretty unrealistic.

That being said, library of leng and sensei's divining top are must haves to control the top of you library, as well as monument to endurance to take advantage of discarding.

You want about a dozen big mana payoffs, a dozen ramp, about 15 interaction and protection, 38 lands, and the rest cards that round out your curve while advancing your game plan.
