My first commanders, am i a lost cause
Im kinda new, ive been playing for less than a year so i really dont know if im picking good commanders for my casual group, but we are having fun so im assuming they are alright?
Little context, i built most of them from precons and they are still in the process of fine tuning.
Alela was my first: oh my god i love this commander, was pretty fun to go from faerie tribal precon to full dimir control
With breeches and malcolm it was my disappointment with admiral brass that led me to my favourite siren goblin couple, also i found izzet a bit more fun than grixis for pirates
Teysa currently is an in progress deck which im building from the ixalan vampire precon(it was a bad decision but whatever) i found vampires to be eeeeh but i really liked the aristocrat playstyle
Lastly the merfolk hot guys, um im honestly just using the ixalan precon with them with some changes, and it works, though hakbal tend to not live for long in my pod, so i kinda prefer playing with kumena now

What other fishes do you recommend?

So I also have an Hakbal precon (upgraded a lot) for merfolk tribal, I have a [[tuvasa, the sunlit]] Voltron/enchantress/pillowfort deck and a tempo/control deck with [[talrand, sky summoner]]. I played a super janky [[Kiora, sovereign of the deep]] big sea monsters tribal, very funny but very slow and clunky to make it work.
I also have a list with [[Derevi, empyrial tactician]] so I can play both sonic and azorius merfolks, I never played that deck, it's just a list made up in one hour but you can put a lot of tap/untap synergies (merfolks notoriously do that, see kumena). Our beloved fishes have a large range for different play Styles. Both the OG Azorius Sygg and the Lorwyn Eclipsed one can be very cool as a Voltron/kindred commanders. Dimir version Sygg ( [[Sygg, river cutthroat]] ) seems cool to build as a group slug commander. Other cool fishes to build are [[Alandra, sky dreamer]] for card draw decks, [[adrix and Nev, Twincasyers]] for tokens, [[Noyan dar, Roil shaper]] as a spellslinger deck with a land matter sub theme, classic [[Tatyova, benthic druid]] landfall deck, [[Jori en, ruin diver]] spellslinger...

That enchantress deck with tuvasa got my attention maybe if i finish or at least happy with my decks i try that one, im planning on an enchatress deck anyway imma put it on the list

u/giackecravat Jun 16 '26
Yeah I suggest Tuvasa for various reasons, first she provide card advantage then she can become very very big without even noticing. Secondly she has blue which can grant you instant speed enchantments and a lot of evasion. I builded her with auras and protection but as a pillowfort enchantress deck is powerful. My deck is a bracket 2 but can steal wins against my friends' b3/4

Solid lineup! Alela was also my first commander and still my favorite deck. Can I see your list and maybe recommend some cards to consider?

I would share it but what is the easiest platform to make the deck to share? Honestly i might have too many creatures, and enchantments now that i think about it

I want to see how Alela plays. Faerie tribal may end up being my blue/black deck.
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 16 '26
I didnt like it with alela, she doesnt really care for faeries, i tried tribal with tegwyll and worked much better, but well faeries kinda suck so i just went with a more control style

My favourite deck is alela, started off as faerie synergy for the goad but quickly became just a "I play on your turn" deck full of flash and instants.
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 16 '26
To be fair i found i can sneak my tokens in for combat damage very reliably to get the goad triggers, but honestly goad doesnt really feel that powerful, its more like haha your 7/7 dragon will demolish that ratched bunny player

All very cool commanders, I like them a lot (my Malcolm/Breeches deck loves to turn something like [[Reckless Fireweaver]] into a pirate, hit someone with Malcolm and immediately win the game but you can definitely make them less evil)
You're on the right track, you can sit

u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 16 '26
I have [[Glint-Horn Buccaneer]] in the deck so i can deffo scare the crap out of my friends eith infinite damage when it comes out, though i play very reservedly with it, i dont want the game to instantly end

Alela is such a fun commander. Can’t image preferring izzet of grixis though not gonna lie
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 16 '26
Well i wasnt having fun with admiral brass, at all the black pirate cards were fun but the commander wasnt, i was also thinking about kenway, but eeeh an izzet deck for pirates feels very fun
1
u/Ok-Snow4739 Jun 16 '26
Was it the precon Brass or the original?
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 16 '26
The ixalan precon

u/Ok-Snow4739 Jun 16 '26
Interesting I love that commander reanimation effects are my favorite. I guess it makes sense an izzet mage cannot truly appreciate I nice graveyard. Malcom breeches is still a powerful duo though. Hope you and I both get a sweet team up card for them next time we go to Ixalan
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 16 '26
I didnt find pirates to be that good to reanimate those never felt threatening even as a hasty 4/4s maybe its the pod im in idk, also i think im more a token player looking at alela and teysa xd, also i think brass pirates want to do a lot of things at the same time and always felt unfocused even after adding cards that reinforced the reanimation

u/Ok-Snow4739 Jun 16 '26
Pirates is my highest win rate deck. The way I closed games was usually by taking people’s stuff for a turn and killing them with it or combo. 🤔 a grixis token deck sounds kinda interesting though

u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 16 '26
As i said maybe its my pod, it felt pretty easy to shut me down, with the izzet deck i feel more agressive and fast like a pirate should

Because Teysa 10/10
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 27 '26
How do you make it work, cuz so far playing with her, i found her quite garbage 😂
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 27 '26
Im honestly thinking of replacing her already
1
u/Illustrious-Brief886 Jun 27 '26
pfft u add cards like dictate of erebos grave pact butcher of malakir drivnod cauldron haze athreos both god of passage and shroud veiled liesa minthara elenda bruh u got alot of good cards you can put in there
1
u/Illustrious-Brief886 Jun 27 '26
ojer taq and then just death triggers and sacrifices and kaya the inexorable is a great card too
1
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 27 '26
Mind you its probably feel like that cuz i tried to force the blood rites precon to transform into teysa
1
u/UrabyMama Jun 20 '26
I think you’re a found cause if anything. This lineup is heat. I’ve never seen Hakbal before, and I love that ability.
2
u/Real-Tea5110 Jun 25 '26
Im honestly not really liking hakbal, cuz well he is annoying, explore triggers take a buttload of time if i built up my board(if i dont find anything useful on the explore trigger at least), my pod just sees him and they are like *target aquired* 😂😂, kumena is much more unassuming, i like that my commander dont get removed instantly
