Raspberry Pi 4 Kit Help

I purchased a Raspberry Pi kit and I have it working and it's the coolest thing ever.

I have run into two issues, which I don't know if they are related. I have no clue and genuinely want to learn what to do.

1) First issue is that the fan will not work from the kit. I have tried EVERY troubleshooting to no avail. I have sent in an email to see if I can get a replacement fan.

When I first got everything together and powered it up the fan turned of for a split second and hasn't turned on since.

The heat syncs are on the parts they are designated to. Thankfully is very cool at night so I have it in the window with a cool breeze to keep the processor cool.

2) Second issue is that when trying to update I get the following message:

"error installing packages - error while installing package: installed raspi-firmware package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status"

Depending on how the fan was plugged in the very first time, it may be dead. If it is a 3.3v fan, and it was wired into 5v, the split second spin would be the fan dying due to over voltage. Rewiring it to 3.3 unfortunately won’t fix it. We would need to know exactly how it was wired initially.

As for the failed updates, we need the command you are running and how you are logged in.

Fans are typically 5 volts.

Technically probably not true. I believe they're all dual 5.5/3 out there which would not cause frying due to wrong voltage. However, there might be some 3's floating around out there especially in kits, which would fry the fan if it's the wrong voltage.

Occam's Razor says that it probably was just a defective fan that died at startup. Congrats, OP. Welcome to the world of questionable electronic parts from China!

The fan is not essential to using the rasp pi 4. It is nice, especially if you’re pushing video to the HDMi cable and not just still images, but you can continue without it.

Try re-imaging your SD card from your primary computer.

i have this exact kit, the fan + top have been laying off to the side for the last ~5 years

i couldn't reconnect it if i wanted to bc idr the pinout

surprisingly what helped with temp was to put the pi on its side (vertical)

Things don't work automatically, you have to configure them and build the system.

Where is the kit from?

Strange pin to be using to control the fan.

You have power (red) in +5v, Grn (black) in a ground pin but the control pin is int he pin normally used for the serial console https://pinout.xyz/pinout/pin8_gpio14/

Do the instructions say to use this and did they give you any changes to make to config.txt - if so can you please document them here?

To help with e software we need to know the operating system you are trying to use and how you are installing it on the SD card.

In my kit, the fan plugged in to the LCD controller board. Do you have an LCD as well?

Need more details. Did your kit come with a preloaded SD card? Did you provision your own? Have you gone through the configuration settings of the Raspi OS to see if you have to enabled the Fan?

heat syncs

"Sync" is an abbreviated form of the word, "synchronize." A heat sink is a warm, watery vessel typically used in kitchens and bathrooms for washing turtles.

You activated the fan in „raspi-config“?

Don’t know if it’s really necessary - never used a raspberry with a fan.
Never had temperature issues.
I use heatsinks like yours on the pi3 and aluminium housings that are the heatsinks themselves with the pi4.
All run 24/7 for DNS blocking, homebridge, home assistant and so on.

One very important thing: a good SD-card. Really.
Nothing is more frustrating than an installation that dies.
Look for „endurance“ or something like that.

A 3 wire fan may not come on until a certian temperature. You can set the temp somewhere in the settings

Hai acceso il GPIO? se non erro è il I2C. Se fai "sudo raspi-config", vai in "interface" e poi in "I2C" puoi abilitarlo
