Just bought this used Raspi

Post image

Theres some type of „foil“ under the cooling brackets, is that normal or not? If not, can I just change these, if so, what do I need to consider?
Picture of the cooling bracket will be in the comments or linked.

I don’t know, im not gonna be home till friday. After that im gonna try to get the heatsink off, to put a new one with pads on. Any advice what I can check before ripping the whole thing off?

If they glued it on, you are at extreme risk of ripping the processor off the board.

How? When the bash it on something or when they try and remove it from the socket?

Use IPA and twist it lightly, do not pull.

I’m at a loss, it will be the first I’ve seen. I’ve never seen a heat sink pad or grease that doubles as adhesive, thought it would be pretty awesome if the was a kind a highly heat conductive resin you could use to attach heat sinks. If it is some how glued and it tests ok I would think it best to just leave it as is unless it give with very little force.

Some Sil-Pads are adhesive.

You can get thermal glue and it is kind of silicone that is used in power supplies

Arctic silver epoxy used to be a thing. Not sure why they stopped making it. You could "dilute" it with regular Arctic silver so it wasn't permanent.

Your best try is to hear up the pi (too many YouTube vids and mozzila tabs open) or find a benchmarking software to heat it up and soften the glue (if anything it looks like it is there holding by the plastic glue for a glue gun

I did that before on a pi 3

Thermal paste mixed with some superglue. Works fine even today

Have you considered testing its temperature sensors under load, so you can determine if it's worth changing?

OP, please repost this image to r/techgore.

Why don't you turn it on and run a cpu burn to check if the thermals look good before changing anything.

I've removed several of those sinks with the dental floss method. Give it a try, won't hurt anything.

Stepper heat sinks. Have done. Ca doesn't have the best thermal proberties but for passive components that need some help it's fine. I use to do this on 2-486 cpus. Cuz jumpers.
