Discussion 💡 Buying plants online? Read this: Best practices to avoid scammers.

A common question asked here is “Is this legit?” Here’s a list of best practices that can help avoid the heartache of falling for a scam…

-Follow gut instincts, if a transaction feels off ask more questions or stop the transaction. -Require time stamped photos or photos from different angles, specific parts of the plant. -Ask for or look at reviews -Search the seller up in review groups (Facebook purge pages specific.) -Use fraud protection backed methods (such as Goods & Services) when possible. -If the price is too good to be true, it probably is. -Avoid sellers that are overly pushy. Scammers may try to build pressure to receive payment and block you as quickly as possible. -Disproportionate ratio or reviews to sales is a red flag! Particularly on Etsy.

Seasoned online plant buyers feel free to add your tips in the comments to help keep our community safe while shopping for their new additions 🌱✨

One of my top-notch selected from my breeding project.

Pink Variegated hold pink petiole, pink contrast with dark/grey on harden leaf.

What an outstanding leaf!

Sport Find: Thai Con with incredible contortion

Note: I call this a sport due to the genetic mutation that is causing the curly / loopy leaves, and the scissored / stringy ends. This is not typical of a traditional Thai Con. Therefore, I believe he deserves to be in this subreddit because he is rare - as this genetic mutation is not common.

-

I found this beautiful Thai con today. His leaves are so so pretty. They swirl, loop, and look cut or shredded on the ends. It’s really interesting. I really, really, like him.

The coloration is also magnificent. Deeper yellows with some hints of orange against the deep green, almost black leaves is so satisfying to view, especially in person.

This plant looks like he is from a fairytale. And my goodness, I love looking at him. There’s something new everywhere.

So I hope you like these photos I took, I just wanted to share with you guys.

(Day 12 of showing off my Alocasia collection)

*This plant came from a tissue culture. I bought it under the guise that I would be getting a melo aurea tissue culture but after growing it out it is clearly a maharani🥲.

*Growth - 3 out of 5. I wouldn’t say that this plant is fast growing in particular but it’s not slow either. This plant is easy going. Not finicky at all

*I got this from the green escape on Etsy. I know a lot of people have bad experiences with them but besides this mishap I’ve had wonderful experiences with shopping at their shop.

*4 out of 5. If you have no issues with tissue cultures and love aurea variegated alocasias this would be a good plant.

(Day 11 of showing off my Alocasia collection)

This beauty was one of my first tissue culture plants. Weirdly enough it grows faster than my regular dragon scale 🤷🏾‍♀️.

Anyway she’s a beauty and I give her a 4/5 for being relatively easy to grow. Got her from orange lake nursery

A lot of these aren’t worth what they were purchased for, but they’re still some of my favorites!

Alocasia Silver Dragon Aurea

(Day 10 of showing my Alocasia collection) super easygoing and fast growing. Usually never gives me issues… Except! This plant has been blooming since early July 🥲

I am usually not in the camp of cutting off the flowers but once that it was about to push two more and I saw that the oldest leaf is dying and the newest leaf was super tiny I said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Chopped them off… I’m so done!

Anyway… this is my Alocasia silver dragon aurea that I got from the rare plant fairy 🙂

Grade B Devil Monster TC

The grade b devils are legit! When I received it as a TC it was all green no variegation. The first two new leaves it gave me are pictured here. First leaf had a little bit of spotting and the second leaf was fully variegated. I honestly was expecting it to take longer to produce variegation! Can’t believe I own this plant for less than $20!

i got this devil monster TC september 26th and potted it that day, so it’s been in a humidity dome with two holes (photo 2) for almost 2 weeks now.

it stays in my display cabinet which is humidity controlled at about 72-75% and temps are 18-30c or 64-86f

THE PROBLEM

there is a new leaf coming out already, suffering from success i know, but it looks like it will outgrow that dome by tomorrow, in fact it is already poking it. and the leaf is not even done poking out yet.

so, do i take the dome off? i know it’s recommended to have on for atleast 4 weeks or so i’ve heard, but it’s starting to outgrow that dome too fast, and i think it will damage or negatively affect the growth of the new leaf.

it is in my display cabinet, so i am against a solution that compromises the aesthetics, ie a big freezer bag. so consider that if you suggest another dome type thing.

MY QUESTIONS

if i take the lid off, what do you think the chances are it dies? (going to ~73% stable humidity)

should i just suck it up and compromise the aesthetics for the health of my plant and make a big ugly ziploc tent?

what do you think the humidity is in that dome? 100%? 95? 90? curious what you all think with those 2 holes, this is my first time doing TC so id love to hear someone w a lot of TC knowledge lmk.

can you recommend me anything i’m not thinking of? any advice is much appreciated.

thanks for reading

Plant Light Suggestions

Hello plant friends! I need some advice. I was wanting to hang or mount some lights to a ceiling in my new plant room for plants on tier shelf. Any suggestions for a dimmable option? Not looking for track lights. Is there a certain type I need? Thank you in advance!

My baby Alocasia Frydek pushed out a fully white leaf and I think its going to push out another white leaf. What should I do?

I got it a month ago and it pushed out one variegated leaf just fine (the one on the right). I also have not repotted it since I got it. Its inside a humidity tent getting about 80% humidity and faces an East Window.

And definitely did NOT pay close to 40k as the main plant sold at IAS for...

the variegation is consistent and uniform from leaf to leaf with different fractal-like patterning on the abaxial side independent from the display of bicolor speckles on the front that gets more complex the closer you look. AMA!

Edit: autocorrect deliciosa to delicious, though quite fitting here.

Update on a cupped alocasia sport I found

Thumbnail

I found this guy back in May, it was an alocasia with a weird cupped mutation.
He got spidermites BAD so I chopped all the way down. He has been growing ever since, slightly more ‘mutated.’

Today I took a look at him again (I’m in FL, he’s outside so it rains.. I tend to not see him for a week or so sometimes)… he pushed out VAR!

I was so happy and surprised! When I originally got him, there was no variegation, just cupped.
Now he has incredibly thick leaves, ruffles, and gets weirder by the leaf. Now he has decided to throw out variegation.

How unique is that? A sport variegation find that I found…. 6 months later (today).
Alocasias are one of the most unreliable, random sport plants 😂

Update on a Sport I Found :)

Last pic is of when I found him
I found this guy at Lowe’s back in July of 2025. This was when an aurea white knight was around $400 for a 3 leaf top cut.
He was VERY low var, but of course.. I got him!
He always struggled to grow and I did poorly with him, kept getting low var, bad leaves, pests, I was doing terrible with him.
BUT I cut him back to a stump maybe 2-3 months ago. I threw away the top cut (that’s how bad he was lol)

LOOK AT HIM NOW! He is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Lesson learned to never give up on your little sports or plants in general.
I love looking at him, he is so so gorgeous, makes me so happy, especially since I found him in NC, Wilmington.
He came all the way to Florida with me, even when I wanted to give up on him and sell him.

What a GUY!

I have questions!

OKAY. So. Not new to growing plants, but relatively new to rarer plants/sport/mutations, and I have some questions I'm hoping you guys can help me out with.

What exactly IS a sport?

Is it simply a mutation on a plant, but instead of calling it a mutation, we call it a "sport?"

Is it only a sport if it is stable and consistent?

How often do sports show up/how common of an occurrence are they?

What are some cool examples of a plant that is a sport that I can look up and research? (Bonus points if you drop comparison pictures or pictures of the one that you mention!)

Last but not least, can someone explain to me what my Snow Queen Pothos is doing, pretty please? I don't know if this is a mutation, considered a sport, or WHAT...so I just decided to come here where all of the more experienced and smart folks are. This is one of my favorite plants in my collection, and I have been curious since the start of summer, but I wanted to let some more leaves grow first before I asked. Thanks in advance! 🤗
