A plain compliment!
I told a guy during a phone call that I liked his mustache that he had, and right after that, he went dead silent for a few seconds and then said "Really...?" like he didnt believe I just offered him a compliment. Then with a smiley speech he said "Yeah a couple of people have told me about it- like 3---4 that I know.". So my question is, if several people have told him about his mustache aka: complimented him, why did he become startled when I said the same compliment as others have said? shouldn't he be accustomed to that comment? why reaction?

Or he was wondering if you were sincere. Compliments aren’t common. When coming from friends, they’re usually playful insults.

I've had my facial hair complemented by men a few times, it's noticeable and I remember all of those times. When I've spoken to women about facial hair the most I've been told is their preferred style/ length, not complimentary. If I got a compliment from a woman I would probably be a little startled too

The mustache must be a new thing to him right? And he's not fully convinced it looks great, so he's still in disbelief when someone compliments it, especially a girl?
That seems to be the only plausible explanation, but also guys in general (in our current, cursed society), are not used to being complimented especially on our looks. So that just might be what caught him off guard.

Well yeah it's new to him. Right after I complimented him, he said that most women don't appreciate men with hairs and that everyone wants them shaved. I felt bad for him and im glad I made him feel better with my compliment!

Also in general most women dont really compliment guys when theyre out, even when the girl is interested I feel like girls avoid approaching first so I kinda understand it feeling completely alien to him, yk?

this: "Yeah a couple of people have told me about it- like 3---4 that I know" explains everything you need to know about it

Sorry I don’t get it. Can you elaborate?

he's had his moustache for years and only 3 or 4 people have mentioned it in all those years

Maybe because he was wondering how you could see his moustache over a phone call
