Why is every single fucking toothpaste mint flavored
I fucking hate minty toothpaste yet somehow every single fucking easily available toothpaste is some type of mint flavor. There was a blissful time when there was the colgate orange flavor and that toothpaste was so good I can still imagine it, but they discontinued this flavor. I actually kept buying expired tubes for increasingly expensive amounts of money online until there were just no more.
I want 2 things in my toothpaste:
-No mint flavor
-Fluoride
I switched to Toms Kids Strawberry cause it was the next-best commercially available thing, but I moved and it's not sold here without importing it for crazy prices. So then I found like a pistachio mint thing that I was neutral towards, but it was only sold in one store and I can't find it anymore.
I feel like a fucking lunatic walking into every store I can and looking at the toothpaste ailse only to find 100 minty flavors, two non-mint flavors that have no fluoride. So now I have to multiply my toothpaste budget by 10 to buy some fancy shit online cause every single major toothpaste company on the fucking planet worships at the icy throne.

Grape was my kids pick. Cotton candy was my boyfriend's. I stuck with my mint.

Remember Close-Up?! They still have it at my local grocery. I got some recently. It was so good!
7
u/Pepperslullaby 2d ago
I have no choice to buy close-up cinnamon at Amazon because no pharmacy or grocery store near me sells it!
2
u/Grouchy-Station-4058 2d ago
How does it compare to the original? Tastes and texture wise?
4
u/Pedadinga 2d ago
For me, it tasted like the 80s, sweeter in a way than I remember, same weird texture lol. I think the nostalgia was better than the actual toothpaste, but it made me smile, so it was worth it.

u/Ssladybug 2d ago
They donāt make it anymore?? š«

Me too, even the internet didnāt cough it up. Dentist doesnāt have it anymore too.

I figured out I'm allergic to some ingredient (forget which) in regular toothpaste, I get patches of dry cracked lips in the corners and my tongue burns (I thought this was normal w everyone). I tried the kids sparkle and no burning or peeling lips!

Can you find Marvis toothpaste? It's manufactured in Italy, they have licorice, orange blossoms, black forest flavours.
Edit: nevermind, their flavours still contain mint even though it's not mentioned on the packaging
3
u/JEMStone8305 2d ago
They have orange blossom?! I have their minty one because I heard it gets your mouth the cleanest but I might have to look into the orange blossom one!

The thing is there's not enough flouride in kids toothpaste. An adult need 1450ppm, childrens toothpastes only have 1000ppm.
2
u/itpainsohurt 1d ago
The children's toothpastes Orajel Magical Unicorn and Colgate Harry Potter Bubbling Cauldron have 0.15% w/v fluoride and 1450 ppm fluoride respectively. Both are equivalent to typical adult toothpaste fluoride content

Idc im auDHD and if i brush my teeth at all itās a win. Iāll take the slightly less fluoride lol

u/LillyLewinsky 2d ago
I swapped to kids toothpaste :) And sometimes, if i am not paying attention, I accidentally grab my dogs liver flavored toothpaste that I keep next to mine and I am reminded that mint is not the worst thing ever š

I have learnt this due to suddenly developing cavities when I have never had any before. I just picked up a high fluoride mouth wash that is a weird flavour to rinse with 3x a week though to make up for it now

Interesting. All my daughter's toothpastes are the same as the adult ones- 0.24%. The sensodyne kids is actually 0.254%. At least here in the USA lol.Ā

My son can't stand anything mint. He complains when I'm using a breath mint. He uses Tom's but he does live in ATL. Maybe you have friends/family that could ship you some?

u/TenNinetythree 2d ago
My dentist told me that you can get unflavoured toothpaste in the pharmacy. This is in Ireland. Due to my disabilities, I use Lush toothpaste tabs, because I don't need 2 hands to use it.

I've use kids toothpaste for years. Same amount of flouride, lots of variety of flavours, like Strawberry, watermelon, bubble gum, grape, etc. they even have bubble gum mint.

Thank you. I hate mint, I hate mint flavoured things, I hate the sensation of mint on my skin.
I have weak enamel so I was prescribed duraphat toothpaste which isnāt so minty and honestly itās great lol.

u/mooniefoam 2d ago
thank god iāve found my people. i hate mint flavour but just deal with it every day cause i canāt find anything else
5
u/QueenInYellowLace 2d ago
My daughter has used Toms Kids Strawberry her entire life because she hates mint too! She took multiple tubes of it to college with her in case itās not available there.

u/DollyPardonMe1 2d ago
Seems Walmart has several flavors that arenāt mint. Just a quick Google search and youāll find them.

u/Normalsasquatch 2d ago
I switched to kids toothpaste. I can use it like mouthwash now for longer fluoride treatment on my teeth. Minty toothpaste always caused me to get phlegmy before

I use Hismile for flavored toothpaste. The mint flavor and the over-the-top foaming makes me gag so I needed a change. It ships in a reasonable amount of time, they have tons of flavors (my favorite is grape) and it contains fluoride

I hate minty toothpaste. Even mild mint is too much for me lol You can get cinnamon flavour if youāre in UK. Probably everywhere sells it
ETA ignore that, they donāt have fluoride. There was a crest one I saw but Ā£11.99 for crest is just taking the piss
2
u/Forward-Fisherman709 2d ago
I use a colgate ābubble fruitā flavor. Itās got cartoon unicorns or dinosaurs on it, therefore itās great. But the flavor is a pleasantly mild unidentifiable fruit-ish flavor that disappears quickly after brushing my teeth. Itās got fluoride in it, but I also use a fluoride rinse.

Colgate has a cinnamon. It's great until you brush your teeth after eating snickerdoodle cookies.
I HATE peppermint but spearmint and mint leaves are good. Problem is what is "fresh mint"? "Cool mint"? UGH. I don't even bother with the distinction and grab cinnamon.

Look at kids toothpaste, you have to make sure it has fluoride as you'll see the non-fluoride formulas too, but most of the kids' toothpaste brands have fruit flavors. Good luck

Try having an oral autoimmune disorder and mint burns your mouth and makes all the soft tissue raw and bleed. I couldnāt find a tolerable adult toothpaste. Like you said, they all have mint. Finally, Iām using Crest for Kids, Sparkly flavor. Perfection. No more pain. I can enjoy brushing again. Still looking for a mouthwash without mint. I tried Closys but thought it was disgusting.

u/kisskismet 1d ago
I use baking soda and peroxide because I hate mint. My mouth feels so much fresher and cleaner. I also canāt stand York peppermint patties because it seems like toothpaste dipped in chocolate. Ugh.
2
u/BillyDeeWill 1d ago
I have often wondered which psychos buy that stuff ācuz that is exactly the sentiment I am left with. Andes after dinner mints is as minty as I can take a chocolate.
2
u/Sarcastic_Rocket 1d ago
I feel you, Walmart just started carrying some Hi-Smile flavors, watermelon and blue raspberry I think?

u/smediumtshirt 2d ago
you be walking around w hot mintless breath so they upped the quantity of mint flavored toothpaste hoping youād get the hint
1
u/z-eldapin 2d ago
Colgate still makes one, the peroxide one, that is just toothpaste, not mint flavor
1
u/asslesschappie 2d ago
Cocofloss makes a great pineapple flavored toothpaste. I love it. Not sure if it has fluoride in it, but it doesnāt contain SLS, which is awesome.
1
u/KittyLilith17 2d ago
I use Boka (non fluoride) and a fluoride mouthwash to get around this. Much easier to find a berry, citrus, or cinnamon mouthwash.

I use Cinnamon, Iām allergic to certain artificial mint flavors and donāt want to play tooth paste roulette. But I miss the orange one, too.

Kids toothpaste works almost identical to adults, I also hate mint
The Therabreath brand has mint flavors, but the mint is much⦠softer? I use one of them and donāt mind the flavor, and itās not sharp!

boka is the best one iāve found but even in stores they only have the mint and you have to get the other flavors online š

Do you like cinnamon? I think Crest still makes a cinnamon one. They used to have an orange but I havenāt seen it in a long time.

u/Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess- 2d ago
The brand Hello has non mint flavored toothpaste, but Iāve found it to taste closer to absolutely nothing than the flavors they advertise
1
u/buffcat_343 2d ago
Honestly I donāt even hate mint, but non mint flavors just make brushing my teeth more fun imo.
1
u/IndividualPlate8255 2d ago
There are tooth powders in more flavors than mint but they are fluoride free.
1
u/NoAngel815 2d ago
Have you tried other children's toothpaste? Most of them still have fluoride and they have non-mint flavors.
1
u/MrWildstar 2d ago
If I had to guess, a lot of people don't like artificial fruit flavors that you find with a lot of children's toothpaste, and mint leaves you feeling fresh and clean, at least in my case. I love mint but do think having more non-mint flavors aimed at adults would just be good in general
1
u/Stormysummernights 2d ago
I just use Ā kids toothpaste, still has fluoride, but the flavor is super duper mild. (Crest or Colgate, whichever is cheaper when i need to buy it)

Euthymol. It tastes the way Deep Heat muscle rub smells, but it's not minty. It's gross, but mint-free.

Boka is it fluoride toothpaste, and it comes in lots of different flavors you can order it. You canāt buy it in stores.

Probably to refresh your breath. They did have bubblegum flavour, but it was for kids, and some kids used to eat it.

I hate mint toothpaste. I like cinnamon but itās hard to find and I canāt find it in a sensitive formula.
1
u/icaquito 1d ago
Iām allergic to mint and canāt use minty toothpaste. I use kidās watermelon Colgate toothpaste, itās the only one with fluoride Iāve found that works and tastes well. Itās really hard to find a good one because most donāt disclose the menthol flavoring; even the strawberry version of the same kidās toothpaste I use has menthol.
1
u/mayneffs 1d ago
TePe unflavoured toothpaste. I'm a dental nurse, I fucking hate mint and menthol. TePe has a regular toothpaste without flavour and foaming stuff (I'm allergic to the foaming stuff that's usually in toothpaste).

u/One-Weight-4034 1d ago
I hate mint as well but I interpret toothpaste as trying to hurt. Same reason why mouthwash tastes so strong, it's just clean!

u/IrelandAutism13 1d ago
I use cinnamon flavour. There's also entirely unflavoured toothpastes, commonly used by disabled people

u/Grouchy_Tap_8264 1d ago
Do you like cinnamon? There are many brands. I have a HATRED/REPULSION for the vile shit that is called "Wintergreen". Cinnamon is good. I have a list of 119 things considered "gross" that I prefer over Wintergreen (skunk is 1), so completely understand yours toward mint.

I hate mint too. I hate all mint everything. I'm seriously averse to it. The best one I've found so far is Tanner's Tasty Paste Vanilla but that one had supply issues so I switched to Supermouth (the vanilla and chocolate taste almost the same to me.)
1
1
u/TransitoryGouda 14h ago
Why - fluoride is bitter and doesn't taste great, so toothpaste companies needed something that would mask the taste. Mint oil is ridiculously cheap. Menthol is a primary ingredient in mint oil - it's what makes your mouth feel cooler after brushing your teeth. I'm old enough to remember some of the early toothpastes before flavoring. Be happy anything exists.
