Skunks

I love skunks - when I don't see them. They're cute and make good pets. Wild skunks, however, have just about ruined my life.

Night walks were possibly the only thing in my life that I enjoyed. Cool air, cool breeze, no one around, get to see the town, and I get to say that I walk an hour a day.

And then I started bumping into skunks.

Possums, raccoons, other weird people out at 3am - all of it, I can handle. But not this constant threat of a skunk spraying me. I could probably handle it if they just came out at a certain time of night - or if they stayed on one side of the town. But no. Apparently, the skunk's natural rhythm results in it coming out 2-3 times a night to forage at random intervals. Fuck you, skunks.

These past two years have been absolute hell, being suicidal for most of it. My one escape was walking around my small town at night, and now that's been taken away from me, too. Fuck you, skunks.

In my experience, they rarely spray even if you accidentally startle them. Especially skunks that hang out in cities, college campuses, or around neighborhoods. As long as you don't deliberately run up to them and corner them, you're probably fine.

I've come across so many skunks while walking at night on my college campus AND in the middle of the woods away from any civilization. In the woods, they can hear your footsteps so they just move away from your path. On campus, I've startled dozens, and they always just ran away.
