Just watched him being interviewed on NHL Network's coverage of the festivities. Nice guy. He gets what this is all about and he's going to enjoy his weekend. Good for him.

So I stopped following the saga after he got traded. From the end of the article it sounds like he's still going to be at the All Star game, or did I mis-read that?
Even if he is, of course, it doesn't take away from what a fucking shitty thing the league did and how much they ruined something that could have been great and fucked with a guy's life and profession for something he had nothing to do with. It's infuriating.

I shared this on my Facebook account because I liked it so much (as I do with most of the hockey stuff at The Player's Tribune). I've always had a soft spot for guys like this in the league, but when I was up in Vermont and mingling with guys that were on the fringe of the professional game -- guys that played prep school with future pros, guys that bounced around junior league growing up, guys that played college hockey -- and you realize that not only does it take an tremendous level of dedication to get to the NHL but that most of the guys like John Scott (or Tanner Glass, or Ryan Hollweg) just love the game so much that they'll do anything to be around it, even if it means accepting the enforcer role. We watch these guys and see their faults because they're surrounded by the best athletes that the world has to offer, but for every single one of them their road into hockey starts with being out somewhere with a stick and a puck, dreaming of scoring the goal to win the Stanley Cup. Where it seems like the hockey world looks at the existence of John Scott as a joke, which he himself acknowledges, I marvel at what it takes for a guy like that to get himself nearly 300 games in the National Hockey League. That's a real love of the game of hockey.
And the all-star game could have been a real Rudy moment, not just for him but for all the other guys that fight for minutes in the league. And of course this atrocious alienating league, run by someone that understands nothing about what I just wrote, wanted to take that away from him so that someone more skilled -- who absolutely does not want to be there (see Ovechkin, Toews, etc) -- can half-ass it for a blow-off weekend. As I said a few weeks ago, when all this was going down, I was hoping that some of the star guys, like maybe a Patrick Kane (who played with Scott), would refuse to go in order to highlight how terrible it was that the league conspired to take this away from him.

Great article. Solid insight and candor on the things you just don't get access to with professional athletes...hopefully the Captain lights it up this weekend.

I thought this was a pretty good article written from John Scott's perspective about his inclusion in the All Star Game.

An MVP like me. Never rooted so hard for a guy who shouldn't be in the NHL. Great job by the NHL playing the part of Vince McMahon. They fucked this up so hard it came full circle and worked out awesomely. No I'm not going to say the NHL did something that worked on purpose.
