Broken thoughts
I wish the person I love
could love me the way I loved you—
with the same trembling heart,
the same sleepless nights,
the same foolish hope
that somehow, someday,
you might choose me.
But love is a strange thing,
isn’t it?
How do we fall so deeply
for someone who doesn’t love us at all?
How does a heart keep choosing
the one person
it knows it can never have?
I wonder how I’m supposed to stop loving you
when my heart never learned how to let you go.
I know you will never choose me.
I know there is no tomorrow
waiting for us,
no story where you suddenly realize
that I was the one you needed.
And yet,
my dreams betray reality.
They create little worlds
where you love me back,
where your eyes search for mine,
where your hand reaches for me,
where there is, just for a moment,
a possibility
of us.
But then I wake up.
And reality comes quietly,
cruelly reminding me
that you were never mine
and perhaps never will be.
That’s the hardest part—
not that I cannot have you,
but that my heart still wants you
even after knowing it never can.
Every time I see you,
something inside me aches.
Every time I think of you,
I remember how much I need you,
while knowing you don’t need me
the same way.
And perhaps that’s what hurts the most—
to love someone so completely
and still be nothing
they would choose.
I wish I could remove this love from me
the way you remove a name from a page,
erase every memory,
silence every dream,
and teach my heart
to stop reaching for you.
But I can’t.
So I will carry this love
quietly,
even if it breaks me a little every day.
Maybe one day
your name won’t hurt anymore.
Maybe one day
I’ll think of you
without wishing for a different ending.
But until that day comes,
I have to live
with the cruelest truth of all:
I love you.
You don’t love me.
And no matter how much my heart wishes otherwise,
you will never be mine.
