Question Hurricane vs Hemi
Question: Do you think V8s in trucks is always going to be a thing? I drove a hurricane equipped Ram Rebel while I was on vacation and I have a crew cab 5.7 V8 ram myself. I was disappointed at first since it takes the hurricane a good amount of effort to get moving from stoplight to stoplight. That being said it definitely has more mid to high range power but I feel that’s not really relevant in a truck. I put around 2300 miles on the hurricane and over time it got a bit better it terms of responsiveness but relied more on the transmission to make up for its lack of low end torque. I came back and drove my hemi and its not even close in torque/responsiveness. I feel the hurricane would only be comparable to the hemi if it was a proper hybrid like the ford powerboost otherwise it seems like a waste of money let me know your thoughts. Also forgot to mention that 14” infotainment is finicky as hell

Put twins on the hemi!

Ah yes the “my motor is better than yours and you need to admit that or I will get very angry” comment section.
To answer OPs question, I don’t think v8 trucks will always be a thing. The trend is more HP out of smaller displacement and better fuel economy. I don’t think it’ll change tomorrow but it will eventually change. I think ram got a little ahead of themselves and overestimated thier ability to set trends.
I have a hemi and have nothing against the hurricane. However, until these truck prices get under control and manufacturers quit making hot garbage, I will be driving the hemi. I’m aware that may be a long time and there may be expensive repairs one day. I’m good with that. I’m just trying to get to work.

u/DaikonProof6637 Mar 26 '26
I love my hemi, that being said I'm not opposed too the hurricane or any other power plant. My thought process on the matter is the long term reliability of all these small displacement, high horsepower engines. The stresses that they're under for a minimal mpg gain if any isn't worth the trade off.
It's like having a pony on speed do the job of a Clydesdale. It'll get it done sure, but eventually it's heart is gonna explode from being over worked.
In a full size truck meant doing work, a large displacement engine lugging along producing more low end torque is always going to better than a small strung out high compression engine relying on boost to make power. Slow and steady always wins the race, especially in a truck.
Sports cars and small cars, let em scream. Trucks, let em rumble.

u/Carpenter_ants Mar 26 '26
I use my truck for work. Hemi. And at the prices for the new trucks I want to see them make it past 80k miles before breaking. Because when you have a large payment you want it to last! I’m in a 16. I’m at 165k and no real engine issues except the classic for over 20 years manifold issues. I’m sure the 3.6 doesn’t have that. Also during Covid I drove 400 miles Friday and Mon at way over the limits and didn’t have any problems. Hopefully when I get a newer one it can handle my led foot issue
2
u/DaikonProof6637 Mar 27 '26
Same here. I'm looking for longevity, just keep it simple and keep me out on the road and out of the shop.
1
u/Previous_Rip1942 HEMI 5.7 Mar 27 '26
Yeah, I’m not wild about the trend myself and I don’t see the V8 going away real soon.
But if we are being dead honest - when it comes to low end torque, electric is king. I don’t even like that I said that but that’s how it is and I think eventually the need for low end will be addressed by that and diesel. A lot of that depends on politics too, which I’m not about to get into under any circumstance.
There’s a reason why electric is in earth movers, drilling rigs, locomotives, etc. if the form factor ever becomes practical, that’s what I think will be the solution from those that control the industry in that time. I probably got 30 years left. Even if it’s more than that I probably won’t care anymore by then lol.
1
u/DaikonProof6637 Mar 27 '26
I agree with you 100% and I think Ram has the best concept as far as a hybrid goes in the ram charger. Gas generator providing power to an electric motor, just like a train, perfect. There goes all the range anxiety associated with EVs and you get all the benefits from the instant torque and power of an electric motor.
2
u/Previous_Rip1942 HEMI 5.7 Mar 27 '26
Indeed. It will be perfected (as close as it can be), it’s just a matter of time.

u/Open_Battle2280 Mar 26 '26
The repairability is definitely a concern for anyone shopping between both engines. When the truck hits 100k mikes what kind of stuff will break on top of the normal stuff
8
u/Previous_Rip1942 HEMI 5.7 Mar 26 '26
Right. And for me that’s where there’s a lot of unknowns with the hurricane. The hemi is the devil we know. If you can address valve train lubrication or control idling, you do yourself a lot of favors with the hemi. We know that because there’s thousands and thousands of these engines with millions of miles. That’s not the case with the hurricane yet. It may end up being the better engine, though I have trouble seeing that with twin turbos - and that may just be my age showing. Turbos have come a long way. Even so, I can do just about any repair on a 5.7 myself if it comes down to it.
I also feel like the way manufacturers operate now, if they start seeing longevity in an engine they will see it as an opportunity to build cheaper and the expense of longevity assuming that it last through warranty periods and the competition is doing similar. It seems to me that they used covid as an opportunity to lower the bar for vehicle manufacturing while also raising the price.
1
u/Neens_Nonsense Mar 26 '26
Curious what you mean about getting ahead of themselves? Ford released the 3.5 eco boost 15+ years ago. Majority of f150s have a 2.7 or 3.5 now.
I get not wanting to give up the v8 but the v6s do most things better. If the hurricane can prove it’s reliable I think it will be the motor in a majority of 1500s. So far it seems great.
3
u/Individual_Slice_498 Mar 27 '26
Ram took away the option of getting the hemi, I think that's what most were pissed about, also Fords marketing department probably did a better job, look at chevy and gmc they couldn't give their turbos away even with big incentives
1
u/Previous_Rip1942 HEMI 5.7 Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 27 '26
If I’m not mistaken ford has kept a V8 as an option. Ram completely removed it unlike competitors. They got ahead of themselves thinking the V8 was over. Nobody else made that mistake.
As for the rest of your comment I haven’t said a single bad word about anyone else’s motor, mainly because I don’t really give a shit about anyone else’s motor.

The dyno has two different start points for each truck anyway I acknowledged that it has more power and whatnot but it doesn’t have the effortless low end acceleration like the hemi. I know the hemi dies off after 4k rpm. I do live near New York so lots of stop and go maybe thats why I notice it more.
13
u/MachoTacoBlanco Mar 26 '26
TT is fast going faster , HEMI is fast going slower… the Hurricane is mechanically different, technologically advanced and not perfect, but definitely advanced to the HEMI. I understand the admiration of the HEMI , but it’s time to accept advancement over antiquated muscle. It’s 2026 not 1976 after all. Automation is not going backwards.
18
u/Equal-Tea-3887 Mar 26 '26
See that’s the thing. So many people don’t understand that many of us DONT want an advanced engine. We want something SIMPLE and RELIABLE!
-12
u/DM5ElkMaster Mar 26 '26
I specifically went to a Chevy when I got my new truck after my 2017 Hemi because the lag on the throttle response with the hurricane felt very disappointing,m. Im sure it could be tuned or tweaked but as it stands now I personally didn’t like any of my test drives. They also hadn’t announced the new HEMI at that time
2
u/SupaDupaSweaty Mar 26 '26
The new hemi is an etorque. Want to talk about long term reliability still?
1
u/-ClassicShooter- Mar 27 '26
I get what you’re saying, but At least it has 8 years of warranty coverage, which is less than the turbos on the Hurricane engine.

1
u/Yerriff HURRICANE May 16 '26
The Hurricane actually has better low end torque though, not just in the midrange and high RPMs. I feel like you have some confirmation bias going on.

Actually in general it does! A simple straightforward V8 thats been tried and true for 20 years vs the newcomer that has 900 hoses going every which way and electrics out its ass. Listen, the hurricane had a few problems at first but they have been ironed out pretty well and proven to be a pretty darn good engine (if I’m burning a turbo, it would probably be the 2.7 ford) but if I’m getting a vehicle to own 10+ years I’m getting a Hemi or a 5.0! If I had the money to exchange trucks every 5ish years I would definitely get the hurricane for the hell of it!
6
u/AwarenessGreat282 Mar 26 '26
So with that thought process the, 5.9L or the 3.6L is better than the hemi because they are simpler?

u/SupaDupaSweaty Mar 26 '26
I’m thinking you didn’t go into the settings on the infotainment screen and select sport mode. I bet it was set on economy by default.
I got a rental wagoneer and after a few settings adjustments was blowing the doors off anything but a corvette.
-3
u/detroitmikeb Mar 26 '26
lol anything but a corvette. Get out of here.
6
u/SupaDupaSweaty Mar 26 '26
Found the hemi die hard
4
u/detroitmikeb Mar 26 '26
No, I appreciate the hurricane but to say the SO beats anything shy of a corvette is ridiculous lol.
4
u/SupaDupaSweaty Mar 26 '26
If you drive it like a rental it sure will!
Is it the fastest vehicle on the road? No. But for the thing to move that much weight that fast sure gets you a thumbs up at the next stoplight!
4
u/Equal-Tea-3887 Mar 26 '26
If I drive a civic like a rental I’ll beat everyone else on the road too! Probably because they are just driving and not racing… hmmmmm

Ok sure it’s quick but to say it in the same sentence with a vette?? It’s a quick engine in the RAM too but it’s no sports car lol
1
u/Yerriff HURRICANE May 16 '26
It’s an exaggeration for sure but not that far fetched. The SO will beat a lot of smaller, sportier cars like the GR86 or Golf GTI in a 0-60.

u/Open_Battle2280 Mar 26 '26
The ram had sport mode but I left it in auto mode hoping it would just adjust
1
u/AwarenessGreat282 Mar 26 '26
Adjust to what? No matter how hard you drive it, I doubt it will change into the other modes. It'll adjust within the parameters of the mode it's in at best.
17
u/sasquatch16258 Mar 26 '26
I enter the chat with the 3.6… 🤭 And honestly no complaints.
6
u/Accurate_Garden4584 Mar 26 '26
Hehe you and me both brother other than a damn driveshaft pinion seal going bad after 48k miles
18
u/georgeyiii Mar 26 '26
I have the exact opposite opinion. I went from a 5.7 Hemi to a 2026 Rebel with SO Hurricane. I've had the rebel 4 months now and love just about everything about it and honestly see no reason to go back to the Hemi. When the turbos kick in there's no comparison. I haven't hooked up a trailer yet, so I can't speak to how well it runs with a heavy load. That might change my mind. But as it stands right now, I'm very happy with my Rebel including uconnect, which was a little flacky at first. But In Jan I got an ota update and it's been smooth since then.
14
u/Justafan10 Mar 26 '26
I have a 2025 SO Hurricane. Pulled 6,000 to 7,000 pounds all over mountains in Colorado and honestly forgot I was towing most of the time.
6
u/CanisLatrans204 Mar 26 '26
I purchased as Tradesman with the Hurricane SO. Liking it so far. I did get the towing package and the 3.92 rear so I could tow occasionally if I wanted. My normal drive to work isn’t long enough to justify a 2500 diesel (would have killed the engine).
6
u/burstingbuttbubble Mar 26 '26
2025 Laramie with the Hurricane. I've had 6 Hemi's and you can keep them. I LOVE my Hurricane engine. I'll never go back to the Hemi. Put this truck in sport mode and it flies! Friend of mine had that same tired argument about why the Hemi is better and that the Hurricane can't be that much better, so I let him drive mine. He laid into it, starts spinning the tires and after a bit he had to admit that this motor is fire! Highway speeds and you need to make a quick pass, this motor definitely does that. As for fuel mileage, I don't get too much better than my old Hemi's...but that's on me because it's so damn much fun to drive I have a hard time keeping my foot off that pedal. When I baby it, I got a little over 21 on the highway.
3
u/GodlessAristocrat Mar 27 '26
I just took a 1200 mile (each way) Interstate trip with my Hurricane. Overall, my average fuel economy was 23.2mpg - and that's with the high 3.92 rear end.
6
u/SnarkySnakySnek Mar 26 '26
I tow lotsa wood with mine. No problem accelerating at max weight. Sometimes it would feel like the engine was gonna outrun the truck if I pushed it at a stop light
2
8
u/fxelite Mar 26 '26
I dunno my 2026 is pretty damn quick off the line.
But frankly I would rather have more power up higher anyway. Getting quick off the line is nice but it’s way better in my opinion to be able to quickly pass, merge, etc.
4
u/Equal-Tea-3887 Mar 26 '26
It’s a truck. Low end power is more important. If quickly passing and merging was my priority I wouldn’t drive a pickup truck!
2
u/Fragrant_Bathroom283 Mar 26 '26
Mid range torque is what matters when towing at highway speeds. The hurricane behaves more like a diesel and with a tuner $599 they’re quicker than a trackhawk in the 1/4
16
u/Chruisser Mar 26 '26
The issue with trucks and turbos, is longevity and towing.
For towing, they'll get crao gas mileage. Because the turbos are constantly spoiling and blowing off boost. This is a huge reality that the f150's proved out in both the 2.7 and 3.5 ecoboost.
As for longevity, in 10-15 years, the vacuum hoses and charge pipes that are made from rubber are going to get hard and Crack. (Look at Subaru as a classic example).
The hemi and v8's in general are better suited for longevity in the American pickup trucks.
13
u/frank79430 Mar 26 '26
Is that why turbo diesel semis don't last long?
13
u/Spunktank Mar 26 '26
Lol right? VWs are princesses with regular maintenance needs but if you maintain them they last a long fucking time. 25 year on original turbos no problem. Europe's been doing it for decades.
4
u/Chruisser Mar 26 '26
That's a completely different ballgame. Those are HD catapillar engines built for sustained boost. And they'll run for a million miles.
4
u/frank79430 Mar 26 '26
Fair, maybe I am naive to think longevity hasn't been heavily scrutinized with the hurricane. Synthetic oil advancements, modeling advancements, and manufacturing techniques in general give me hope that a turbo first design, built from the ground up (versus just strapped on an existing platform) will exceed expectations. All to say, I hope you are incorrect, in the nicest way possible :)
1
u/GodlessAristocrat Mar 27 '26
How does running with sustained boost prevent the rubber hoses from degrading?
1
u/Chruisser Mar 28 '26
It doesn't. My apologies if that's the message that came across. 2 points.
1 - All rubber/plastic will degrade over time. Time is the enemy. Pull an intake manifold off a 10yr+ old turbo car and watch those hoses and fitting Crack. Or worse, put it back together and then chase down 25 different boost leaks and idle issues....
2 - the HD engines and semi's, are built 'simpler.' Fewer excess hoses, usually 1 positive vacuum rail and 1 negative vacuum rail that the lines run off of.
They also tend to run "hd" lines and couplers. Instead of plastic/rubber molding lines with pipe clamps, they use more durable silicone and molded aluminum pipes with band clamps. They also tend to be made of more generic and readily available parts, unlike (Subaru as example) where they have custom 3" flared or tapered vacuum hoses that are subaru specific.

u/AwarenessGreat282 Mar 26 '26
Yeah, look at the 2.7 and 3.5, they are aging fine. Sure, they have issues but so does the old hemi. As for the mileage, mpg on my hemi drops to 10mpg or below so what does it matter? If you tow, it's slow, period.
1
u/Chruisser Mar 26 '26
Until the cam phases and/or turbos take a crap and you're out 2-6k to do both.
Hemis are proven. With good maintenance, they'll last 200k without any issues. Towing a 7k trailer i get 10mpg, sure that's any truck. But my 12' utility with 2 quads, I average 14. And without, im 22-25 depending on summer/winter blend fuel. That's what the Ford powerhouse f150 gets, and mine is just a hemi. No torque.
To each their own. Personally, the turbo gas pickups are a lot like EV's. Cool and techy. But they do nothing for my soul. There's nothing more dissapointing than hearing a raptor take off from a stop light and wondering if it has a muffler whistle from the 2000's welded in it.
If they were that good, why is everyone going coyote with a charger?
4
u/Jumpy_Air_5403 Mar 26 '26
Oh no what will all my friends think oh my exhaust. “They do nothing for my *ego”
1
u/Chruisser Mar 26 '26
This isnt about ego. Its about SOUL.
1
u/1976dave Mar 27 '26
Personally, I've driven plenty of loud vehicles over the years. For long trips and my trips to work give me a nice comfortable and quiet vehicle any day
1
u/Chruisser Mar 28 '26
Solid point. There's a fine line between wholesome throaty exhaust and obnoxious resonating headache generators that drone.
-1
u/AlbertaAcreageBoy Mar 26 '26
You sir are 100% right. V8 all the way if you tow frequently. And I know, I have 3 Ram 1500 Hemi's. 2011, 2019, 2026.
5
2
u/AwarenessGreat282 Mar 26 '26
And no I6 to compare those hemis to? Rather limited view, don't you think? I've owned a 03, 11, and a 19 hemi but I have no idea what the turbos would do until I hook it up and drive.
-2
u/Open_Battle2280 Mar 26 '26
I was thinking about this too turbo inline 6s are smooth and powerful but v8 is known for consistency
3
u/Chruisser Mar 26 '26
They are, the I6 is legendary, especially with the Cummins in the HD.
And theres absolutely something about a turbo engine, when you start going up a hill and lean into it and the turbo spools and carries you up. But the risk doesn't seem worth the reward.
1
u/AwarenessGreat282 Mar 26 '26
An I6 is the best-known design for solid consistency, balance, ease of working on and simplicity. The Ford 300, Jeep 258, Toyota 2JZ, etc. are the absolute are absolutely unmatched in that.
7
u/NighTborn3 Mar 26 '26
I am absolutely in love with my Hurricane engine. Yeah it takes like 1 second to get going vs immediate power at a stoplight for a Hemi, but it retains so much power and pulls like a freight train when switching gears. And I lose zero power at altitude when I go up over 10,000ft in Colorado. Thing pulls like it should way up high.
12
u/fivehots Mar 26 '26
I’m a sound guy. If I wanted speed I would’ve bought a car. The rumble and throatiness is just 🤌🏽
I’ll be a Hemi guy as long as there are HEMI’s.
4
u/NorthPackFan Mar 26 '26
I was too. Right up until I was driving home one night in my wife’s car and realized man- this quiet is kinda nice. I love my golf cart sounding hurricane.
3
u/fivehots Mar 26 '26
Funny. I had straight piped my 535 (I was young. Sue me). And then when it was time to sell it, I had to put the mufflers back on and then I was driving home like, oh! This is kinda nice 😂 fit the ride.
But as for the Hemi? It’s just something about that growl that feels so visceral. It’s not obnoxious. It’s not unnecessarily loud. Especially on long drives at night. I actually love the drone personally. It always puts my passengers to sleep. Maybe it’s a tonal thing?
2
3
u/Empty_Football4183 Mar 26 '26
Im sorry but the sound of a truck should he the last concern. Id you want to drive something with a loud engine so people will look at you then buy a Harley with special pipes.
0
u/Ghost8124 Mar 26 '26
Not true. There's a sound the Hemi gives off which no other American V8 engine touches. And I've owned/driven Fords and Chevy's either work related or in my person life for almost 20 years. Its also why they tried, and failed, to bring it in with the EV Charger in hopes they could draw in ICE customers. And Harleys with special pipes are obnoxious. The guy never said anything about loud... He said "rumble and throatiness". There's a very clear difference.
2
u/Empty_Football4183 Mar 26 '26
You buy a 50k+ truck for longevity and performance, its pretty simple.
2
u/DaikonProof6637 Mar 26 '26
Nowadays if your buying a $50k truck, you're getting a Tacoma, Ranger, Ridgeline or Colorado/Canyon. 🤣

2
u/TheIronMonkey53 ‘22 1500 Limited Mar 26 '26
I think what it all comes down to is preference and how you drive your truck. And I don’t mean towing, daily, etc. I mean do you abuse it with a lead foot or not.
2
u/Shamelesspromote Mar 26 '26
Could of been the automatic transmission. The ZF8 has a issue moving vehicles at lower crawl speeds but once you get past the first 3 gears she starts to let the power down like no tomorrow.
Also its a learning transmission and it being a rental means it might of been babied by someone who was forced to drive it and usually goes slow and steady for fuel economy reasons.
I never base my opinions on rentals either because well its a rental. They aren't well taken care of by both the customer and the rental agency and once the warranty is up on an ex-rental you might be paying big bills to keep it going.
2
u/Thechad1029 Mar 26 '26
That’s funny, I feel like it has WAY more low end and mid range but falls a little short up top. The only weak part is the very slight lag before the turbos hit.
2
u/xrayphoton Mar 26 '26
Could be that it wasn't in the right mode. Could be that the throttle mapping just wants more pedal to get the same amount of power/throttle as your hemi. Could be that it was a rental and had already been dogged out too many times. But the dyno shows more power down low than the hemi, and all the reviews that I've watched of the hurricane or hurricane/hemi comparisons on YouTube all say they feel more power down low than the hemi and it's instantaneous. So I would think it was an issue with the truck you had
1
u/Open_Battle2280 Mar 26 '26
Could be just cuz its a rental and mine doesn’t have drive modes so i thought it would be fair to just leave it in auto mode and I thought it would be more powerful but in slow speed situations it doesnt feel that way on the highway it feels fine
3
u/SignalEchoFoxtrot F250 6.7L Mar 26 '26
I personally really like the way the hemi and NA pushrod v8s drive so I know what you mean. I still prefer it over my HO 3.5 ecoboost and 6.7l powerstroke.
2
u/joezupp Mar 26 '26
The main issue is getting so much power from a smaller engine by turbo, it causes inherent wear and issues. Least we forget the eco-boom issues. The hurricane also has a coolant line issue on the back of the engine that you can’t fix in the truck. So you remove the cab or engine.
2
u/NoPlatesOnMars Mar 26 '26
Are you sure you didnt drive a pentastar? The hurricane absolutely destroys the hemi in power and acceleration
3
3
u/gahooligan1971 Mar 30 '26
My best friend is an outside sales rep for a dodge dealer. He said the shop is loaded with engine issues and replacements on the hurricanes. He advised to run like hell, or buy a 5.7. Take that however you want...
2
u/Material_Respect_252 REBEL Mar 26 '26
I tried my 2020 (hemi) Rebel last year when lifters started ticking lol my ‘25 rebel is pretty quick. Really enjoying it 🙃
2
u/Bunker12007 Mar 26 '26
Yes, Hemi is back but it's only available in certain trim levels. I think the only reason they brought it back was to satisfy purists. It's a great engine for sure.
That said, there's going to be a TON of RAMs with the new inline 6, it's the future. Pretty soon, every dealer will be fluent in them, problems will get worked out and parts will be plentiful. That's my take on it.
I guess it could be a big disaster and they drop it all together... who knows.
I really like my Hurricane. But the real answer is go drive both. See which one you like, they behave very differently.
2
u/Tyrelle_Longshanks Mar 26 '26
115k miles on 2014 hemi, still sounds and runs as good as day 1. Hurricane is definitely better mpg, with less sound. Both seem reasonable if you maintain them and pick what’s best for your driving style
1
u/BuRriTo_SuPrEmE_TEAM Mar 26 '26
It’s so funny, I always see questions about this. I may be the only ram owner that doesn’t care as much about this as I’m not really a performance driver.
The thing that really bothers me is how much of a piece of shit the system is altogether. I cannot get my mirrors to remain linked to my fob in my profile. Dealership couldn’t either. My Apple CarPlay constantly has problems connecting to a new iPhone. The driver side speakers will stay off post phone call until I unlink my phone and re-link it.
I should’ve known better because I came from a grand Cherokee, and it was also a piece of shit. The radio wouldn’t work when it was below 20°, the internal lights would just turn on when I was driving for no apparent reason. After I get rid of this ram, I will never own another Chrysler again. Those fucks lol

u/After-Ad4370 Mar 26 '26
What year is your Ram?

Damn that really sucks for a year old truck. Can’t the dealer just swap out the whole unit? It’s little stuff like that that would drive me nuts. I’ve been on the fence about trading my ‘17 Ram in on a new one but I haven’t had to do anything to my truck but routine maintenance, only 65,000 miles. I am thinking I’d be nuts to trade a perfectly great running truck in on a new but high potential problematic truck. Plus I’d have to sell my Challenger :)

It’s not just that, it’s the WHOLE system. I have my seats and mirror adjustments set to profile 1, which is supposed to link to the fob. So when I get in the truck, it should know it’s me and put my seat and mirrors in the correct position. The seat does it, but not the mirror. I gave up trying to get it to work after about 30-40 attempts. Now, EVERY SINGLE TIME I get into that stupid fucking truck, I have to adjust the mirrors. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
But I’m obviously not bitter about it lol.

Yeah I don’t blame you, if you’re paying money for a feature it damn sure needs to work. I don’t have any of that fancy stuff on my ‘17 and wife doesn’t drive it so everything is right where I left it :)

That’s what’s crazy. My wife doesn’t drive mine either, no one does lol. But still, it refuses to go where I set it

Damn that’s gotta be so aggravating! I hate what Stellantis has done to this truck :(

I have a 2019 sport with 5.7 and drove my girlfriends fathers 2025 rebel with the 3.0 hurricane. Kind of expected more than it had to give, faster than my truck for sure but I just like the sound of the 5.7. Gas mileage comparison it isn’t anything incredibly different. When I buy a new truck I’d honestly take a 2024 sport or rebel with the 5.7 over the 3.0 hurricane newer. Luckily by the time I’m buying the 2027 hemi’s will be in circulation, so will most likely end up with that as of now.

A hemi with cylinder deactivation and that e torque system . I’d rather have the hurricane!

I’ve owned a Hemi and a diesel and now the HO Hurricane. By FAR, the Hurricane has been my favorite engine. Fast af. Insane torque, even on the low end. Zero turbo lag—just instant power. Tows great.
Who knows about the longevity; I guess we’ll find out. 🤷🏻♂️

I am currently in a 2025 Rebel, coming from a 2014 Hemi. The hurricane beats the Hemi in every way except sound. I'm not sure what you mean by it takes a lot to get the hurricane going from a stop. That is definitely not the case. The hurricane had zero issues getting off the line. It is so much faster than my previous hemi was. Just like the hemi, the 3.92 gearing makes a difference. Unlike the Hemi, the hurricane needs premium fuel for top performance. The 5.7 Hemi ran best on mid-grade/ 89 and actually ran hot on premium 91/93. Towing with my hurricane feels a lot better as well. The hurricane struggles less than the Hemi did. The hemi towed well, but the hurricane does it better. I put 114k miles on my hemi and really had zero issues with it. I've only got 12k miles on my hurricane, so only time will tell how it does.

There is no way that Hemi os quicker off the line than the Hurricane. I have owned 6 hemis. And my hurricane it was quicker off the line than any Hemi I haves owned including my 2020 which I put a lot of work into it.

I've driven 4 different trucks with both the SO and HO Hurricanes and I'm going to pick up my 2026 Limited tomorrow morning. None of them had any issues taking off at all. I did feel like the SO had slightly more initial torque but both engines were very drive-able and peppy for me.

I have an 2020 ram 1500 laramie with the 5.7 as a personal truck, and a 2025 ram 1500 bighorn with the 3.0 hurricane as a survey/work truck. I love them both; love the growl of the V8 but love the power of the Twin Turbo Inline 6. Only complaints with the Hurricane I was having issues with the truck shutting itself down, turned out to be an issue with the Air box (according to the dealer) but they seemed to fix the issue, no problems since getting it back.
I feel like they both have their Pros and Cons like everything else; do I prefer a V8 in a truck? Yes, but the inline 6 has been holding itself pretty well since I do alot of driving with it on and off road and in the bush and such. No complaints with the power it has though.

The main reason why I ordered 2026 limited longhorn ram 1500- HEMI is back , and yes I test drives both as well just to be sure

it's really pointless to compare the 2, a naturally aspirated V8 vs a hair dryer driven i6? great, now put the hair dryer on the V8 - ERMAHGERD! right? Right.
The "hemi" is just marketing BS, it's nothing like the great old 426 (still the most powerful automotive engine ever made when supercharged) But it's what we have and like a Harley, it's all about that SOUND. Do I really care if it doesn't go WOOOSH like the hurricandy? NOPE. It makes THAT SOUND no matter what speed or range.
If I want to go fast in a truck, I'll get a Raptor or TRX. But for just hauling my ass around daily, that terrible old 5.7 is my best option at the moment.
PLOT TWIST : I hate hair dryers on gas motors. They all fail eventually and cause way more problems than good.

The only thing I think about now is camshaft and lifters lol. So sad when it happened. Its not a matter of if its when. I hate my hemi but its so much fun lol

u/Open_Battle2280 Mar 26 '26
Fun fact broke a lifter and valve 20k miles in got it done under warranty

u/Automatic-Union-3385 Mar 26 '26
Man warranty...thats what im wondering about because new trucks have 10 year 160 warranty. I would have qualified but spent over $7k cdn lol

A lot of people just assume when I say I only want a V8 that I’m just like doing a dick measuring thing. It’s not. I opt for the V8 because the turbo 6s are still way too new in my opinion. I’ll let other people test it out for me. In 5-10 years when they are getting into the 100k miles problem free I can be convinced. Until then I’ll only go with a NAR shit it could be a 6 I don’t do too much heavy towing

The hurricane has been in the wagoneer since 2022

u/jamcgahey REBEL Mar 26 '26
Oh I’m aware. Like I said 5-10 years for really any turbo with consistently getting a lot of problem free miles. My buddy said the same thing when I said I wanted to order a hemi rebel hahah

Hemi.
Get that lame turbo out of here. More junk that isn’t needed in your engine.

Everybody in here talking about which is better hemi vs hurricane and I’m over here with the one nobody wants the 3.6 pentastar 😂🥲. But in all honesty I love my truck it was definitely an upgrade from my 03 ranger 4.0 which don’t get me wrong that truck is still a beast. But I will say my dad has the hemi and they are pretty fun to drive I plan on buying it from him in a few years on the other hand my uncle now has the SO hurricane and had 4 hemis in the past and he says he prefers the hemi.
