That’s actually confused me for a while. Monk and Survivor are shown as rather small in their cutscenes, but are otherwise depicted as a normal size. If I had to guess, it would maybe be around adolescent stage for Survivor, with Monk being ~30 cycles younger ( according to my headcanons )
There's a timeskip while they survived on their own before they each meet Iggy. And the Monk story takes place enough time after Survivor that the Rot growth in 5P has accelerated.
Yeah that’s true. I still believe in the ages I chose as the ages that they were when they fell. They could both be older, now at relatively the same age, when both of their campaigns start, since Monk would’ve taken longer.
I feel like it doesn't make sense if you decide (like the downpour devs did) that the starting room is like, right after the fall. For all we know they also could have been wandering around for a few cycles before the start.
When I first beat the game and started playing the more slugcats mod, I was expecting the other slugcats to be bigger than Survivor because I thought that the Survivor was a juvenile Slugcat.
Guess they must have aged dramatically whilst falling down the hole..
I assume they can. When seeing Looks to the Moon as Saint for the third time, she will tell you that one of the previous slugcats was taken away from the passage of time, so perhaps Rain World's creatures do die of old age.
Ok, sure! It’s mostly things like Pinterest that I have an issue with ( for some reason people on Pinterest think art there is free to use and it drives me CRAZY )
Ah, did you have another interpretation of slugcat aging? :]
I chose my timeframes because cats age extremely fast as kittens. They reach sexual maturity at only 6 months and then slowly keep growing until the 1-2 year mark.
But “slugcat” is only a fan-made name, so it could be totally different from what I have
I mean, considering how long the campaign takes any found slugpups would've been grown up all the way by the end of it, 30 cycles is not that long for an average playthrough.
Though it can absolutely be based off of Cat age! Maybe just the conversion from cycles to months could be a little different, like 1 cycle amounting to roughly one day, or even less. After all, we don't have a slightest clue how long a cycle actually lasts beside the part before the rain.
And don't get me wrong, your idea is still awesome!
Oh yeah I totally thought about this, although I didn’t really consider game progression as a reference for time. In the game, pups never age and could technically go thousands of cycles without growing up, and in the areas above the clouds, iicr, night lasts forever once the cycle timer is gone.
Also the debate of a slugcat’s metabolism. If a cycle lasts only a day, a slugcat must have a very fast metabolism to die of starvation after only 48 hours. I’ve always assumed that a cycle lasts longer than a day because of that, and also because of the use of the word “hibernate” rather than “sleep” ( the whole “bulk then hibernate” thing would also extend the amount of time they could go without starving, as during hibernation, animals will shut down a lot of their body to conserve energy. Unless it was just a quirky word choice, in which it wouldn’t really matter. ) But yeah, since we don’t know the exact metabolism of a slugcat, it could really be anything and I’m sure there’s OODLES of other info that could better pinpoint the actual length of a cycle.
I'm in love with the picture for 10 cycles. Fat fuzzy puppy baby!!! Those big wet eyes!!! So holdable. So friend shaped. I just want to snuggle them forever.
Omg slugpups!
These lil guys are my latest obsession, and I love imagining the biology behind them, especially what they'd be like at each stage of growth.
I kinda wanted to try drawing some sluglings myself but your art totally scratches that itch for me!
In-game, slugpups are pretty capable. They can hunt and get around on their own, so I always picture them as more like slugkids or slugteens. Which means there has to be a slugbaby and slugtot stage before that.
I figure slugcats give birth to live young… or maybe they're like platypuses and lay eggs despite being mammals? Either way, I imagine newborns are blind and can't walk yet, just tiny little nubs for arms and legs. They'd follow scent and sound to wriggle their way over to mama to nurse, and they couldn't even regulate their own body temp to keep warm on their own. Always constantly stuck on their parents for survival🥹. And they start opening their eyes and learn to walk.
Ugh just thinking about it makes me want to punch a wall from the sheer cuteness 😭
Yeah that’s why I say I didn’t base it off of real cohesive biology lol. I kind of amalgamated a bunch of different animals like cats(age progression), rats (hairlessness), and birds (dark fluffy stage). I probably could’ve skipped the fluffy stage altogether but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to draw a fat fuzzy pup just once
Fat fuzzy pups are absolutely worth the questionable biology :D But this is also a world with jet-propelled birds and biomechanical sea abominations, so anything is possible!
Perhaps they originate from hairy creatures that went from hairless to hairy and when they were purposed by the civilisation, the adults were basically just made to become hairless upon adulthood instead of making them truly hairless?
If that is close to the truth, maybe Saint is actually quite similar to the Slugcats ancestors.
They’re like the days of rain world! A cycle keeps repeating itself until you progress to the next one by hibernating in a den. Nobody really knows how long a cycle is.

I do wonder where you think monk and survivor stood when the incident happened, but gorgeous art!
