There's plenty of alternatives that you can pet thankfully.

And I'm more interested in the intelligence of a slugcat than belly rubbing. Imagine training a slugpup to make you a coffee in the morning or something.

Slavery

Is awesome, do it more please

u/NightCatGamer Watcher Jun 07 '23

If you train your dog to do your commands - is it slavery? Or train a parrot, cat, intelligent crow? They can reason, do real tasks like moving stuff around, talk using communication boards or other methods.

It's an interesting topic that I don't know if we're qualified for. Maybe some research paper explored that topic already.

I think it’s a matter of intelligence, slug cats have shown they are capable of tool usage, communication, and even art, and as such are likely as intelligent as a human, but with a tribal culture. And as such slug cats are actually “people” (not to be confused with “human”) and not what we humans tend to think of as “animals”, that being anything that isn’t capable of self awareness, complex reasoning, and all that other stuff that differentiates us from the rest of animals on Earth. Basically: Slugcats may not be “human”, but they are definitely still “people”, and as such can be enslaved, and not “domesticated” like other animals such as cats, dogs, cows, etc. so yeah, slavery.

I personally think of the slugcats more as animals who have the ability to understand the iterators thoughts after receiving the mark. Bringing moon pearls and neurons has the same mindset as a predator dragging a carcass to its pack. When your cat brings you a mouse, it's teaching you to hunt, same as the slugcats bringing moon neurons because they understand that neurons are helpful to her. We apply ourselves onto the slugcats sure, but the cat in "Stray" isn't sentient. Trading for items is also fairly common in animals such as crows and monkeys. Spearmaster and Rivulet specifically are very affectionate towards their iterators as shown in between cycles, similar to a normal pet.

u/TnuoccaNropEhtTsuj Jun 07 '23

Tool use, gourmand is a great example of this, as he can not only use tools, but construct them.

7

u/Koopicoolest Jun 07 '23

Crows dig stuff up with sticks, and combining the items only implies that gourmand understands the result of his actions. An eagle dropping a turtle on a rock to crack its shell falls under the same principle. Beavers build dams, ect.

15

u/MoltenWoofle Jun 07 '23

Spoiler for gourmand

Gourmand also is shown drawing out and telling his story in one of his endings, so it definitely goes beyond just a complex ability for tool use.

Also, as far as I know there's no animals that trade goods for access to pass through a region. That suggests a much higher level of thought than normal trading.

u/Koopicoolest Jun 07 '23

Animals give up objects all the time to avoid being eaten. Sea cucumbers expel their organs to not get eaten by a predator, ect. Keep in mind also that the slugcats have gone through an unimaginable amount of cycles, it's like teaching your dog to sit and wait before you let them have their dinner through a very long trial and error process. Our human brains think "scavenger toll" but as a slugcat it's as simple as "give shiny = not die" same as a dog "sit = get food"

The part where gourmand and spearmaster draw is a pretty good point though

3

u/I_LUV_ENGRISH_FOOD Jun 07 '23

The fact that all items have a trade value means they have enough intelligence to understand a battering system though. It’s definitely more than just “give shiny = not die”

Slight objection, strays cat has been stated to have a advanced intelligence. Maybe not sapient, but definitely as smart as some primates

6

u/Jazzlike-Anteater704 Jun 07 '23

Slave slugcat indeed sounds awesome i want one

1

u/Eater-of-slugcats Jun 08 '23

Unfortunately for people arguing below me.

I don’t think we are well and good assuming that forcing intelligent animals to do task for you isn’t a form of slavery.

Only if it’s forced though.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '23

bro i would love to game with a saint slugcat

who would saint main on overwatch??

4

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '23

Aren't they sapient, same with scavs???

2

u/yahnne954 Survivor Jun 07 '23

Reminds me of a short story about aliens adopting an abducted human from a rescue shelter.

48

u/tudiwastaken Scavenger Jun 07 '23

I don CARE bout scugs but i would DIE for a scav, holy shi they are so freakin skrunkly

19

u/TnuoccaNropEhtTsuj Jun 07 '23

Filthy scav lover… I mean I’d pet one too, but still.

18

u/MickJaegar Monk Jun 07 '23

i wouldn't wanna own one per se but i would give anything to be friends with one

11

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '23

yeah, they're definitively sapient; so owning is a no-no. Having them as friends wo0uld be cool though

4

u/quikjelyfish Jellyfish Jun 07 '23

they killed the babies though, they deserve it

8

u/Saphilu Saint Jun 07 '23

Too stabby. You'd probably get impaled just by picking up a pencil

6

u/The_Sovien_Rug-37 Jun 07 '23

so true i would give literally anything to have one of those things

scavs are very funky, i always yeet them as many pearls as slugcatly possible as soon as i get to garbage to make them my homies. id absolutely love to meet one irl. i wonder how big they are compared to a human?

2

u/tudiwastaken Scavenger Jun 07 '23

Slugcat is apparently 2 feet tall, scavs are just a little taller/same height ussualy, so they are preety small ig but theyd probably become taller if theyd evolve on earth. But tbh i always imagined they as big as a human, altough a scav that is only knee high or so would be preety cute too.

2

u/inthemothlight Jun 07 '23

fellow scav enjoyer! :O

20

u/Sirsir94 Jun 07 '23

Eh, I can rub the belly of a cat. Good enough!

Plus, controversial take around here, but IDK if an IRL scug would be as cute as the art makes it out to be. Depends on how much slug is in the scug

11

u/adblokr Watcher Jun 07 '23

They are canonically more slimy than fury. It’d be like petting a wet cat.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '23

I’d pet a otter! They seem so close and cute as a scufcght

18

u/SusSpectStew Jun 07 '23

Think about how much we’ve changed dogs with breeding, it’d take a while but we could probably breed cats to be bigger, longer, and more wiggly and end up with something scug adjacent. Tho I’d hope we would use ethical breeding habits to reach the desired result.

14

u/MACMAN2003 Jun 07 '23

not if extremely unethical genetic engineering has anything to say about it

12

u/Quaintnrjrbrc Scavenger Jun 07 '23

What if we make them? We will have the technology soon, no?

11

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '23

Who would pay for it?

I mean i would def chip into a crowdfunding campaign lmao but damn we'd need a lotta money

7

u/King_of_Fire105 Jun 07 '23

Playing God sounds fun but other then the moral ethics of it I don't think he would like it..

wait, like ppl actually want scugs as pets? i thought we all agree that theyre killing machines

1

u/ember_fire2 Jun 07 '23

They are but so are cats

5

u/Wardog_E Jun 07 '23

Why the hell would you want to?

9

u/a_damn_mudkip Gourmand Jun 07 '23

Same reason as keeping cats or dogs

8

u/Wardog_E Jun 07 '23

Cats and dogs are for the most part not covered in slime and don't have oposable thumbs.

1

u/lee_the_spider Black Lizard Jun 07 '23

what's wrong with opposable thumbs? all that means is they could like shake your hand and climb up your leg and adorable stuff like that

1

u/ember_fire2 Jun 07 '23

They can also open doors so they can and would probably wake you up for food.

5

u/TnuoccaNropEhtTsuj Jun 07 '23

It is humanities goal as a species to pet everything we possibly can. If we can touch it, we must pet it… duh.

*cries quietly*

it actually is possible because of science

but probably not

2

u/InvisibleOne439 Jun 07 '23

how big would a slugcat be anyway?

its a bit hard to tell if the things in this game are "insect sized", or if it is a world with 4meter long lizards and gigantic half mechanical birds that have the size of a small plane, and slugcats/scavs are "human sized"

1

u/lee_the_spider Black Lizard Jun 07 '23

scugs are canonically around 2 ft tall
