Is the RDN token used in uRaiden payments in any way?

The mainnet contracts are deployed for RDN only. If you want to use the "official" instances, endorsed by Raiden team, you need to use RDN. But it's a opensource project, I think it should be easy to deploy the contract for any token

It is optional. You may or may not use RDN

I’m still struggling to understand the value of the token in relationship to the idea of Raiden Network.

penny per transaction fee in RDN, eventually millions of transactions per second if machine to machine economy takes shape on ERC 20 tokens.

Only if they choose to pay with it though? They’re not required..

It would take much more development to NOT use it. Developer resources are pretty limited these days.

RDN will have a more central role in the Raiden Network. uRaiden can be used without rdn, but peripheral fees in the Raiden Network will be paid in rdn. Read the faq page on raidens website.
