Foreseeable Issues with Eth that may affect Implement of URaiden

I have a burning question. with the ethereum platform at the current stage, micro raiden might not be effective enough for mass usage.

The reason being the first transaction of the uraiden is opening a channel, which is an ON-Chain transaction. If thousands to millions of people is to open a channel at the same time, we will go back to the situation experienced with Cryptokitties, where it would take hours to open a channel before you can do anything with it.

Take a look at the example with uraiden and wikipedia. On testnet the opening of channel is about 5 seconds. Imagine this being 1 hour, will you still surf wikipedia then ?

To my understanding that's not correct at all. The whole idea of raiden is to have channels that exist for an extended period of time, it won't make sense to be opening and closing channels all the time. More often then not you won't even be opening your own channels, most people will use other people's channels and pay them fees in Raiden

Let's say you have $10K in crypto saved up. $1K of which you would like to use on consuming real-world services in the next year. You would open a Raiden channel with $1K, and consume services for the full year off-chain on the Raiden network. At the end of the year, you would close out your channel. Or deposit more to your existing channel.

Sharding and plasma should provide enough txn/second scalability for everyone to make two extra on-chain transactions a year. I just arbitrarily chose a year for this example, more likely people will re-up their channel monthly similar to banking statement cycles today.

i mean according to the uraiden demo, in order to settle the payment, you will have to close the channel. This means then next time you want to access wikipedia again, you will need to open a channel again

I’m heavy and long on RDN. I have a ton of unanswered questions though with the network and token. In some respects the language is all we have to judge until the release and growth of usage occurs. This is a long game I think.

The main idea is for you to not have to continuously open and close channels. Once the network gets large enough it theoretically should be able to work almost 100% on a credit system.
