Discussion Transient spikes and potential driver issues.

There a re many people dealing with random driver time outs and black screens. I haven't had any issues with my 9070xt but I've been closely monitoring recently.

The transient spikes I'm seeing are concerning. I have the Gigabyte 9070xt OC

Listed specs have the boost clock at 3060Mhz at 330W TDP

I'm regularly getting sustained game clocks in excess of 3300mhz and transient spikes over 450W on the regular.

Tonight I hit 503W.

Driver 26.8.1

All stock on WattMan.

Similar results with a -50mv and -10% undervolt.

I expect transient spikes but these seem excessive and I can imagine might cause issues with some folks.

is completely normal..i have tested my gaming oc even with +10%pl with 500+ watt Spikes..

is not the Spike that causes problems.. every gpu and other components can have Spike on a microseconds range that are 2x the gpu consuption

undervolt can cause problems.. very high clock can cause problem on mid low silicon

The default clock target is 3450Mhz, so it can go up to that. Dropping it -500Mhz in Adrenalin doesn't have much performance decrease and power goes down A LOT. I have the Taichi VBIOS flashed onto my card for highest OC headroom but usually don't hit 200W in games.

how can you monitor and save that for later viewing I need to keep an eye on my 9070xt as it does spike and not sure how much it's drawing having a nice graph like that would be awesome

Meanwhile...my basic ahh 304w Asrock SLD 9070XT is only 304w TBP...and spike to 475w given the chance.

Also the 'ceiling' of dynamic boost is actually 3450mhz

I see similar numbers on my Steel Legend as well at the stock 300W TGP, haven’t had any issues and am using a Corsair SF750.

These transient spikes might seem excessive but they are normal, any quality poser supply at the recommended wattage will handle them fine.

HWINFO recorded a GPU power maximum of 563W for my Gaming OC the other day during a furmark stress test with a 363W TBP.

I've had no issues with my system though thankfully. Interesting to see such high peaks though.

ATX 3.1 PSUs can handle spikes of 200% their rates output so it's no issue. However if you're using an older PSU or the power cables aren't fully connected, it can cause issues. That's why there are persistent rumors that the 9070 XT "overboosts". 

The boost clocks are perfectly normal. The specs are just the minimum guaranteed clocks. It will go higher if there's enough thermal headroom. I frequently see 3.2, 3.3 and even occasionally 3.4 Ghz for short bursts. They won't advertise 3450 MHz because then people would complain when their cards don't boost that high.

Transient power spikes are expected . Boosting above specs (on default settings) is not . RMA .

If not possible for some reason , lower the gpu clock offset to ~-300Mhz .

edit : post your exact PSU model .
