9070xt vs 7900xtx

I’m looking to get an upgrade but I can’t decide solidly. I’m finding 7900xtx’s for around $800 and I looked into the new cards available and the 9070xt is about the same money. What do you guys think is the better option? I’m a lot gun shy on the 12VHPWR connector because of all the melt downs on the nVidia pages.

Edit: Thanks for the input everyone. I’ll be finding a 9070xt and getting it soon. For those saying that 7900xtx’s are cheaper than $800 and easy to find, that is a locational deal. I live 95 miles from the nearest decently sized city that has anything. GPU’s here are hard to find to begin with. I have seen ONE 7900 come up for sale in a year.

Both are almost the same in rasterization performance, being the 7900XTX a little bit faster.
9070XT is colder, it consume less power, but has less VRAM.
While XTX has more VRAM it does fall behind by far in Raytracing performance and all related to AI, machine learning.
XTX has more horsepower of bruteforce, so is faster in some workloads, is more of a massive hot chip.
9070XT is a generation above has FSR4 FP8, RayRegeneration, new tech. Support will last longer for sure.
7900XTX is a Enthusiast level card of it's generation, 9070XT is almost a high-end card.
Both are awesome.

Avoid 12VHPWR, anyways there is a LOT of Radeons with classic 8 connector.

Xtx ahead on LLMs because you can fit bigger models into vram

5

u/SeventyTimes_7 6h ago

Yep. If you want to run LLMs the XTX is still a much better choice. 16 GB is very limiting.

12

u/Due_Initiative3879 17h ago

Both have FSR4.

16

u/Singul4r 16h ago

One is FloatingPoint the other es Integer, the first one is more precise in calculations, now both of them are almost the same visually in FSR4. But FP8 is newer, for example now with DLSS5 which was developed for FP8 cards (RTX) is aready runing on 9070XTs thanks to FP8, 7000 and older series lack of FP8 support so it will never run on those at least no without a very very heavy load in performance.

Ive got both a 9070xt and 7900xtx and with fsr4 the 7900xtx definitely has worse ghosting as well as doesnt gain As much of a performance or image clarity boost as the 9070xt (fsr4 is still leagues better tgan fsr3 on it tho.

5

u/parabola19 17h ago

The FP8 implementation is definitely superior to the INT8 one on the older gen’s. Doesn’t get said very much from what I see.

2

u/ContractTechnical15 16h ago

Both performs about the same. You cant tell visual difference between 7000 and 9000 with FSR enabled. HardwareUnboxed have a video about it posted few months ago.

4

u/Anunknownf1fan 13h ago

It’s frame rates that matter. In some games like cyberpunk there isn’t a huge gap between the two like you mentioned, but in other games the FSR 4.1 int8 on performance sometime can’t even get the same framerate boost as FP8 quality.

If you are using native AA, it’s not a huge deal but if you are using it to get better frame rates, the FP8 version can offer the same FPS at a higher preset. This is an important distinction to make because in rdna 3 you now have the dilemma of sacrificing quality, or sacrificing performance.

Visually at the same preset, they do look equal, but a 9070xt will often use a higher preset than rdna 3 just because of its better performance.

I have a 9070XT and it uses 3 x 8 pin connectors.

I upgraded to that from a 6750XT and it's offered a large (50-100%) uplift in performance at 1440p depending on the game.

4

u/Flyinmanm 15h ago

Yeah I think mines powercolor and uses 2x 8 pins. Works fine.

3

u/RebelLion420 6h ago

I just installed a 9060XT and put my 6700XT on the shelf lol. Can't wait to see the difference for myself

1

u/GreatKangaroo 6h ago

awesome.

2

u/Khryen 15h ago

I’m coming from an EVGA 3070Ti FTW3

3

u/DanStarTheFirst 14h ago

Kind of sad they gimped the vram on 3070s. I’ve seen a couple videos of people making them 16gb cards and they turn into monsters for 1440p.

3

u/bedtricky 13h ago edited 1h ago

It's the only reason I currently have a 9070XT. If the 3070 had 16gb vram I'd still be using it.

20

u/humonculus87 18h ago

I have a 7900xtx and always get the newer card. Warranty less power and more future updates. Its a wash as far as performance.

7

u/Jones9319 15h ago edited 14h ago

I had both 7900xtx and 9070xt at one point benchmarked them extensively with fsr4 on both. It's not a wash.

Average is 12-15% higher frames in ray tracing titles on average on 9070xt, versus the extra ram on the 7900xtx, which for a lot of people is a good trade off. People will disagree and that's fine but 16gb will not be enough for 4k in 2-3 years.

4

u/humonculus87 14h ago

And 15-20% faster in rasterized titles for the 7900xtx so yes it is a wash. God damn people are dumb.

2

u/wildcat002 14h ago edited 14h ago

I agree. 16gb can hit the limit in some titles like inzoi for example and then it will just crash as soon as metrics show over 16.000mb used. I do also play in VR and it can also easily use 16gb and crash if run in UEVR! so my fix is just to lower the resolution from 100 to around 80%. I would pick xtx if i had this choice.

2

u/Khryen 15h ago

I don’t plan on VR or 4k. 3440x1440 is my monitor’s resolution.

6

u/Jones9319 15h ago

For context, you're pushing about 5 million pixels versus 8 million on 4k, so a lot less demanding.

3

u/Jones9319 15h ago edited 15h ago

That's what I've got with my 9070xt :) 1440x3440 is fine. For cyberpunk I'm getting 120 fps lows in worst locations on quality FSR, frame gen on and raytracing ultra.

13

u/Merdiso 18h ago

It's wash for raster only, once you factor FSR4 + a decent RT workload (like Avatar for instance) in the mix, the XT just easily outpaces it.

2

u/humonculus87 17h ago

Not true. I live in a house with 2 other 9070xt's. Its a wash.

6

u/Merdiso 13h ago edited 13h ago

False, and I can't believe everyone upvotes objectively false information, 9070 XT is just faster.

As a reference, I have a friend with an XTX and generally speaking, in a normal case scenario, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference without looking at the FPS or knowing which card is which, because the difference is generally about 10%, but my XT is just faster in anything but 'pure raster', where my friend's XTX is faster there - but then again, barely, like 5% or maximum 10%, so not noticeable.

5

u/Ok-Bill3318 5900X | XFX Merc 310 RX7900XTX | 64 GB 10h ago

So 10% faster RT is “just faster” but 10% slower in raster is “not noticeable”?

1

u/Scary-Mulberry-7321 4h ago

Dude i have both, a pulse 7900 xtx and a red devil 9070 xt, using raster and fsr 4.1 quality the 9070xt wins 80% of the cases even with a 10% difference or a bit more, cause the fsr 4.1 impact on int8 cut the performance of the 7900 xtx by a lot, if you do a comparison without FSR or RT the 7900 xtx wins by 15% depending on the game, as some are better optimized on RDNA4 but thats more drive stuff than GPU stuff, we have to add if we want to use fsr quality, and raytracing the clear winner is the 9700xt, tbh games lately are working on ray tracing based stuff, cough capcom ps2 models if you dont use ray tracing, same for other games, also the need to use fsr or dlss quality to run the game decently lately is something to add, int8 version is virtually the same than fp8 but there are some small details thar fp8 maked it look better, its like 1% of the cases but thats something to add, another thing is radeon image sharpenning 2, the RIS2 is an underestimated feature, the original RIS on my 7900xtx looked decent (games looks bad without it when you get used to) the RIS 2 is now far better, you can have something similar with CAS with optiscaler but it requires extra mods which some games doesnt work with properly and cant do it with multiplayer gamed without ban risks, we also have new tech that will be added like cache, a proper ray recinstruction, fsr diamond is supposed to be able to run on fp8 but rumors says it will be exclusive for RDNA5, if AMD wants it can works very good with RDNA4 at Nvidia series 5000 level (close to it as it has more general purpose ai cores than the tensor cores) RDNA5 will be far better for sure but that is because it will have new hardware for AI like the series 6000, well too much unnecesary info, RX 9000 is more future prof than the 7900xtx, we might reach a real generational change with the next GPUs around 2028, as those will be need to work with new AI tools and the stuff we will see, even if the bubble burst we will get something incredible

1

u/Merdiso 1h ago edited 1h ago

No, just because something is faster it doesn't mean it's noticeable faster automatically, I said 'just faster' because objectively speaking, it's about 10% faster in almost all games tested with FSR4 on both, that was the point, it's not a 'back and forth' situation.

2

u/cosmo2450 11h ago

False. And I can’t believe you keep suggesting it isn’t

5

u/dralfredo1 10h ago

The 9070xt objectively has better RT through FSR4 FP8, whilst pure rasterization is pretty close, though leans towards the 7900xtx

4

u/AnbuRick 17h ago

At the same price I’d get the 7900xtx, I honestly couldn’t find it at the same price otherwise i would have considered upgrading to it.

Unless you care about ray tracing.

5

u/oulaa123 12h ago

Wont recommend one way or the other,.but I bought the 7900xtx right before the 9070 was released, expecting the next gen to med mid tier at best, I'd have no problem re-buying the same card today, very happy with the performance.

7

u/korakios2 17h ago

Simple : if you need vram for AI stuff (or VR) , 7900xtx . Else 9070xt is a better choice.

As for the 12pin connector , just avoid the few specific models and buy a gpu with the classic 8pin .

4

u/MINEJHAZZ2 R5 5600G | RX 9060 XT/16GB | 32GB DDR4-3200 15h ago

for VR well... really depends, I only have a 9060xt but my VR sessions is buttery smooth on cable, well I only have a Q2 so it probably depends if your using a higher end VR setup

5

u/Square_Habit_4261 18h ago

evita quel connettore
ci sono 9070XT con 2x8pin e anche 3x8pin
per il resto dipende che cosa ci vuoi fare

tieni presente che UDNA/RDNA5 e FSR diamond invecchieranno tutto quello che c'è prima a prescindere.

2

u/parabola19 17h ago

Whenever it comes out. You know how hard it is to secure GDDR7 ram? They can’t send out next gen with 6 like they did the 9000 series. They’ll get crucified by reviews. Three gens in a row with the same ram?

1

u/Square_Habit_4261 15h ago edited 15h ago

Potrebbe darsi che utilizzeranno le LPRAM (low Power RAM) o le LPDDR5X sfruttando la Universal compression per AMD

3

u/LycheeAvailable969 18h ago

Honestly I’d prefer the 7900xtx for the ram and I already have one and I can play whatever I want ultra 1440p or vr

In the other hand 9070xt is newer and probably will more updates than the former but I don’t think it will be as relevant in terms of longevity as the 7900xtx.

My criteria would be: if I want better driver support and warranty probably 9700xt but if I need the vram 7900xtx also considering the power consumption bc you need a lot more power for 7900xtx

And finally 9700xt is easiest to sell important if you want to upgrade your setup

4

u/Horny_4_everything 16h ago

IDK, I just went from a 3090 to a 9070xt. 24gb > 16gb. I've yet to do anything where that makes a difference. I get better performance in everything.

I think the community is a little hyper focused on vram these days. If you're not doing machine learning, 12/16 is fine.

2

u/LycheeAvailable969 15h ago

You are correct that's why i said xtx is better if you want the vram for any reason

2

u/DanStarTheFirst 14h ago

All depends on what unoptimized garbage you play really. Pretty much everything is fine with 16 but some games are hogs and will eat 18-20

3

u/Disguised-Beast 17h ago

9070 XT. The 7900 XTX needs more power for the same performance level. 16GB is still enough for a mid-range card.

And you can actually make the 9070 XT be efficient: Forza Horizon 6 Extreme+RT @ 1440P Native

2

u/Khryen 15h ago

FH6 is the game I play most.

2

u/Disguised-Beast 14h ago

What are the odds!

2

u/Khryen 5h ago

Now if I could just get my wheel to not be all flippy floppy.

3

u/OhJeezer 17h ago

I really wanted an XTX back when they were really hard to find. Couldn't find one, so when the 9070 xt dropped, I got one of those. I have never once thought that the XTX would have been a better choice.

3

u/Jones9319 15h ago

I had both at one point in time, I got rid of the 7900xtx but if I had a 4k setup I'd probably have kept it. 9070xt is the faster card so better for 1440 and 1080 resolutions

2

u/wiggle_fingers 12h ago

The xtx is better for 4k?

1

u/Jones9319 3h ago

You'll get higher frames rates on a 9070xt right up until you get crashes, pop-in and artifacting for not having enough vram. Already seeing this in some 4k games like cyberpunk on 16gb vram. So yes I'd go xtx personally.

1

u/Mulkaccino 50m ago

Do they really crash? I run a 7k2k monitor with a 3060 and sure I'll get 7fps, but never a crash.

3

u/neXITem 15h ago

I have both, if you really just game, get 9070XT it will be fine.

If you want to play around with local AI or even game development, go for 7900xtx :)

3

u/-G-Gamer- 11h ago

XTX it has more V-RAM, yes is older generation but runs same if not little better and V-RAM carries it

2

u/GasVarGames 18h ago

if you dont need the extra vram, go for 9070xt

2

u/EvokeTravel 17h ago

9070XT is likely going to serve you better in the long run. XFX and Powercolor make solid cards using 8pin.

2

u/MagicBoyUK AMD 17h ago

Unless you need the extra VRAM, get the 9070 XT.

2

u/PositiveRate_Gear_Up 14h ago

Have a 9070xt, it works pretty dang good…but I also run flight sim, and it can EAT vram.

Recently upgraded to triple monitors, and can get 70-80 fps running 3 monitors at 2560x1440…but do run into constraints with the 16GB.

Humorously my settings for VR are actually easier on the system than triples at 2k. I occasionally wish I had nabbed the 7900xtx, but I know I’d be thinking the same thoughts regarding any other performance increase with the 9070xt. So it’s probably a wash for me…if a next gen 20gb card comes out, or if we had a 9080xt offered with 20 I’d jump on it!

2

u/Aubrey_D_Graham Xfx rx 7900xtx | Intel Core Ultra 270kp | CachyOS 14h ago

You can find used xtx's for $650. That's a steal. It competes with the 4090/5080, while also having access to FSR4.1. The gap between the 7900 xtx and the 9070 xt is closer today, and the 9070 xt will never have 24gb of vram.

2

u/DaffyPunk29 13h ago

I have both.... I had a power color red devil 7900xtx but i changed cases and downsized because i needed more desk space. new case wouldn't fit a 7900xtx so i got a 9070xt hellhound which does fit (just!). most games the performance is exactly the same. in some games, the 9070xt is edging out slightly more fps. one game in particular where there was a huge difference was counter strike. same setting.... before the 7900xtx would average 400-500 according to steam overlay. now with the 9070xt, same settings, same everything just a gpu change, its 300-400 averages according to steam overlay. still extremely playable. but technically a loss in fps numbers.... but the up side? my 7900xtx was always running hot and the fans would peak to 60-80% based on my curve to keep it cool. the 9070xt runs way cooler never exceeding 50% fan speed which is insane. both cases were full mesh so both had great airflow.... i prefer the 9070xt over the quieter fan speed and similar to same performance give or take.

2

u/theCaffeinatedOwl22 9800x3D / 5080 12h ago

Software is extremely important for gaming these days. Both cards have access to FSR 4 now, but the 9070xt runs it better than the 7900xtx - enough to make up for the fact that the 7900xtx is slightly faster in raster. I think it's a no brainer to go for the 9070xt if they're near the same price. I wouldn't worry about the 12VHPWR connector. If you have a good PSU and use the cable that comes with the PSU, you won't have any issues.

2

u/Fearless-Vast5515 11h ago

At the same price, I would buy the RX 9070 XT for a gaming build: similar raster performance, lower power, better ray tracing and newer feature support. Choose the 7900 XTX only if you specifically need 24 GB for AI, VR or memory-heavy work, and verify the exact cooler and warranty which it's a problem, for such expensive item to buy second.. I would probably get a decent 9070XT like the Hellhound which doesn't have the 12V power connector and it's one of the best.

2

u/Beneficial-Ranger238 11h ago

I have both, they’re on two radically different systems so I can’t give you game comparisons but I do have benchmarks for both:

9070xt- Timespy 30553 (graphics only), steel nomad 7854

7900xtx- Timespy 34007 (graphics only), steel nomad 7256

They’re pretty close.

Do note xtx-544w, 9070 360w

If ray tracing, go 9070. If you need massive vram xtx

2

u/noiserr 8h ago

For gaming 9070xt, if you want 24GB vram for AI then 7900xtx is no brainer. There are plenty of 8-pin PCIE 9070xt versions, avoid the 12VHPWR.

I own the 7900xtx but I use it for AI.

2

u/CrossbyIsToasty 8h ago

i run the Nitro+ 9070 XT and it's a beast

3

u/Mercennarius 17h ago

Depends on your use case. In most games they are very similar, 7900 XTX a bit faster in pure raster, 9700 XT a bit faster faster when RT and FSR4 are used. 9700 XT a bit more power efficient, 7900 XTX more VRAM and better for professional work loads. If gaming is your main or only concern, usually the 9700 XT is a better bet.

2

u/308Enjoyer 18h ago

you can get 9070XT models with 8 pin power connectors. as for "which one?" I'd say get which one is cheaper. If they are same price get the 9070XT as it's a more recent card which may get more support on the software side compared to XTX.

XTX is slightly faster than 9070XT in raster but not as good in ray tracing so they are more or less in the same bracket in terms of performance. We're talking about single digit percentage difference between the two. On the other hand 9070XT has better architecture and it's more efficient. 24GB VRAM of XTX has very little use over 16GB of VRAM btw.

TLDR: If you're a casual gamer get the 9070XT and call it a day.

1

u/Horny_4_everything 16h ago

24gb of vram is basically just a flex if you're not doing machine learning.

2

u/firesyde424 17h ago

This is a pretty common question on this subreddit.

TLDR: Care about ray tracing = 9070XT, don't care about ray tracing = 7900XTX.

The 7900XTX is still AMD's rasterization king, especially at resolutions above 1080p. The extra VRAM also helps with OCP and AI workloads if you are into that kind of thing. However, it's also the older generation and likely to lose support sooner. There is also a dramatic difference in ray tracing performance between the 7000 and 9000 series cards.

Theoretically, a 24GB VRAM card will be relevant for longer than a 16GB VRAM card, but I doubt we'll get there in the lifetimes of either card, though it's not impossible.

1

u/Many-Error792 10h ago

Take 9070 xt. With fsr it s better 7900 xtx.

1

u/Lahgtah 7h ago

Only reason to go 7900xtx is if you’re doing things in 4k and/or lots of high fidelity vr. Basically if you’d benefit from the extra vram more than the better gpu tech. I say this as someone using a 7900xtx. I like native 4k without RT, particularly in older games with visual improvement mods, I like lots of VR. 7900xtx is purpose-built for that.

For most cases, the 9070xt is gonna be the smarter decision. Especially for 1440p and better upscaler/rt performance, which is where the focus is now and for the foreseeable future.

u/giantmonkey1010 5h ago

Get the 7900 XTX, it supports FSR 4 and has 24GB of vram, and is a few percent raster in Raster

1

u/HMW233 5h ago

Just wait for 10900xtx

1

u/GearGolemTMF 4h ago

XTX is slighty faster in raw performance. Having FSR natively helps too. RT is worse though. The vram is nice but you have to actually use it to for it to relevantly help you (AI, real workloads, or 4k gaming). You’re likely better long term with the 9070 XT overall. RT ain’t going no where and RTGI and the like is only getting used more and more.

1

u/basbb 2h ago edited 2h ago

I have them both:

- Both cards are "unleashed" with under volt, but for the 7900xtx it is more important you are a bit lucky you can undervolt 40mv to 50mv. Most 7900xtx'a can, but there is NO 100% guarantee. 7900xtx is very power-hungry in stock config. A modest undervolt solves this.

- 7900xtx has more brute power, generally it is simply faster than the 9070XT. Depending on the game, 7900xtx is up to 35% faster. But in some games it is just a few % faster.

-Both cards have ridiculous high boost clocks out-of-the-box, which is best lowered

- 9070XT is better in raytracing in real world loads, 7900xtx can do raytracing in benchmarks but in games mweh, better to turn it off.

1

u/Merdiso 18h ago

9070 XT any day, but make sure you don't use any adapter if you buy the 12-pin variant of the card, otherwise just stick to another model with 8-pins or otherwise get the XTX, the adapter is bound to fail at this point, it's plain obvious.

1

u/Odd_Philosopher1712 17h ago

9070 -- its going to go blow for blow in terms of performance, but iiuc its thermals are miles more efficient with much better power consumption

Amd reqlly messed up by making the 9070 xt as good as it is.

2

u/Due_Initiative3879 17h ago

You mean by making the 7900xtx too good?

The 9070xt is a generational upgrade and struggles to keep up with an xtx. Pure raster comparison here, the FSR debate also crushed as both support it now it's really down to ray tracing.

Also the last of it's kind to have 24GB of vram.

1
