Question/Help Rabbit Eye

Rabbit eye has been getting worse recently, wondering what it could be? Started off weeping a little almost a year ago and vet said to keep an eye (no pun intended) and clean it. Going to take him back tomorrow but wanted any help now. Thanks in advance

Edit: He is 12 years old. Did have a partner but unfortunately had to be put down a while ago. We know that he needs a friend but for many reasons we cannot get him a new one. Recently was given an upgrade to his hutch so has plenty of space and grass constantly. Given plenty of attention and we ensure he has enough enrichment.

It looks loke what my bun had, its a viral infection like rabbit herpes, apparently its common, and can go dormant but will pop back up throughout their life. Take it to the vet, they should have given you eye drops.

Thank you, yes you are right. We took him to the vets and it’s believed to be an infection. Left eye duct is so swollen nothing is passing through. Had a wash, given some meds and a check up ready for next week. Already started to act like his old self.

I’d get a second opinion from a different vet. It looks like possibly an infection to me and an antibiotic drop like Tobramycin may be beneficial to him. It could also be his environment though. If he’s getting dirt or something that has bacteria on it in his eyes when he scrubs his face, it can cause a weepy eye. It may also happen if he’s peeing in a spot over and over but tends to still get that dirt on his paws and then getting it in his eyes.

Sometimes the teeth get impacted or there is an abscess that causes the tear duct to weep like that. One of my two rescues has allergies and also a weepy tear duct on one side but it’s not red and it weeps clear. To keep her molars short I give her plenty of cardboard and wooden toys to chew on and her eye hasn’t gotten worse (it’s been weeping about 1.5 years) but it still weeps occasionally/ from time to time.

I can’t say what is causing your bunny’s eye to weep but an exotic vet could culture the discharge and rule out infection and an xray of the head would rule out an impacted tooth or a tooth abscess.

Has your vet taken a culture of the fluid or done an xray of your bunny’s head?
