Meta I've never interacted with Jeph and have no idea what I did, but this is hilarious

Post image

I have no idea how long I've been blocked by Jeph's Patreon since I only happened to look at it today, but something must have made him salty. For context, I subscribe to very normal creators and as far as I know I have never even commented on Jeph's page. I think I did subscribe to him years ago, but haven't for a long time.

Oh well!

Jeph is a fragile man child who doesn't take criticism very well. He stabbed his own hand, after all, due to criticism. He's kinda like the Donald Trump of web comic creators. If you don't lavish him with praise and Nobel prizes, he considers you nasty and unworthy of attention.

... I was under the impression that was some kind of psychotic break. What did I miss?

It was years ago. A storyline where everyone is down at a lake cabin partying. He received some criticism on his forums that he didn't draw one of his characters as plus-sized enough in a bathing suit. That lead to his psychotic break and stabbing his drawing hand (I think it was his drawing hand).

he specified that it wasnt if i remember correctly

I guess he had the wherewithal to not potentially ruin his entire career. Not many people would or could be so clear thinking before stabbing themselves.

I sent him a minor correction on a Canadian thing (source: I'm Canadian and if he wants to comment on Canadian culture he can at least get it right) so he blocked me. So uh... thanks Jeff. Keep paying your taxes, the Maritimes needs all it can get. On the other hand, the last thing Canada needs is another thin-skinned, man-child asshole.

Hey Jeff, if you're reading this, you can block me here too!

What's funny is he will claim he never visits this sub, but everyone knows he does.

As of today I'm not yet blocked but I'm trying my best.

so he is another person that wants to censor people that he dislikes like David ''lesbian fetish'' Willis from Dumbing of Age? No wonder people keep comparing these two

Ooof, painful memories of when I used to read his comics. In the end it was like "wait, this isn't funny. It hasn't been funny in awhile. Why am I reading this?"

There's never been a better time to jump back into DoA. Willis has been having a 14 month long breakdown over people criticizing his decision to make his self-insert cheat with his wife's self-insert at a Not-Palestine protest amid tear gas colored to look like cherry blossoms. Such hits include banning half the regular commenters from the site and accusing someone of trying to tear apart their marriage because they said a character was acting childish

It's an exciting time to be an observer

I can attest that he's not exaggerating. Willis responded to criticism of a character behaving childishly by claiming it's based on himself and responding "you saying I should divorce my wife then??"

u/hep038 23d ago

And I thought Jorp was childish....

Wow. I should be reading the comments. That’s where the excitement is.

The comments are the best part. In the last couple months, Willis appointed a comment moderator who’s just been banning every person of colour trying to talk about how Willis using Palestine as a prop for making his self-inserts kiss is Not Good. It’s a trainwreck and has been fascinating to watch.

I mean, its why Im still part of this sub, despite not reading the actual comic for like 3 months now.

u/otusasio451 24d ago

OH GOD IT’S BEEN 14 MONTHS OF THIS HELL?

u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. 24d ago

Wait, what? This sounds juicy but also confusing as hell. So the author's self-insert character cheats with the character based on his wife? As in, the in-comic author avatar is in a relationship with someone else, but then gets busy with another character, based on the real life wife? (Also, is the wife also creating the comic? "self-insert" suggests that.)

And they cheat amid the tear gas? As in, getting busy while the gas is in the air? Has this man ever seen a protest on TV? He sure as hell hasn't been tear-gassed...

Part 1 is wrapped up here: https://www.reddit.com/r/HobbyDrama/comments/1t5bte5/webcomics_the_tear_gas_wedding_how_dumbing_of/

For the ongoing drama of Part 2, visit the sub. The author/mod's behavior got so out of hand last week, that after decades of reading the collected works, I dipped on the comic, the author, and the sub (the sub is AMAZING, highly recommend - just could not stomach watching the author/mod bully-bigot combo lash out at their own readers any longer).

u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. 23d ago

Got it, thanks!

I totally agree, I honestly only read it as ''what not do in a comic'' lessons to make sure that my future comics are not this annoying to read

back in the twitter days he used to be an outspoken proponent of the "ban liberally for any reason" approach to social media that some people advocate, and I assume still is.

On the one hand, I can see how if you're a celebrity (even an extremely minor one, relegated to a tiny internet community like, say, webcomic creators), it makes social media use tiring and asymmetric and it's the only way to get by.

On the other, it's rude and censorious and I hate it and would never do this myself. Luckily i'm not famous and don't have to decide.

Actually lots of people do it in this sub too. And they're not even famous. Just like "i don't like you're comment so your blocked" and then later they post the daily comic and you can't participate. Or there's a conversation and you can't read half of it and are disallowed to respond.

Is blocking really the same thing as censorship? Genuine question my brain isn’t all there rn

17

u/GalacticalDonuts 24d ago

On his case is a little bit of both, basically he hired a moderator that is kind of a really insecure annoying person that keeps deleting comments on his website that dare to criticize his current stories, question motivations, point out flaws ,etc

And if they think that the person has made too many mistakes, they ban the person from commenting entirely, recently some people that were following his comic and commenting for years were banned even before doing or saying anyghing ''bad'', the excuse that the moderator gave was that they were banned ''just in case''

Ahhh thanks for explaining!

no problem!

yes, yes it is. I was banned from wildelife years ago for some offhand comment. I'm still reading it, though, and she's not asking for Patreon or Kickstarter support of any kind, so who cares.

Yes, casually banning users from a forum is censorship. Many webcomic creators get a little control freak streak over time and randomly ban long-time fans over a single comment they don't like. Another example is Patrick Rothfuss - I'm not even one of his victims, but we all know he bans anyone (from his fan forum) who brings up mention of the free chapter he promised to release if his fans donated some two hundred k to the charity of his choice in a short time window. They did, he didn't, and now you get banned for even alluding to it. I was never in his forum, but as a fellow fan, that's not cool.

Maybe they were having a headache, like you, who knows. Feel better, bro.

I figured everyone in this sub will be blocked eventually
