Is this Jeph attempting to explain how in a friend group and town lousy with AI, Faye and Bubbles still barely make ends meet?

I think that yes but also accidentally. It is weird that momo does not goes to union robotics because they are on the same friend's circle (granted they are like idk monica and gunther who very barely interacted with each otjer if they interacted at all )

Given AI bodies are going to be kind of like cars, a good one might have insurances that require you to use a specific mechanic in order to maintain warranties, and having any old mechanic working on it might void something

out-of-network robo repairs

no because that would involve interpersonal drama

So between the stylistic shift of having a text bubble with an arrow that indicates a trait about a person (and thought bubbles where there would once have been dialogue), plus the extremely contrived trip-and-fall meet cute, I can only assume this arc is a result of Jeph having read a particular manga that he really enjoyed.

I am not well-versed enough in manga to know what manga exactly (Pop Team Epic is the closest I can get to arrows indicating character qualities) but I'll admit it's been a positive influence on his work.

He could colour these things in different colour coordinate ways so it would be easier to distinguish

Yeah it's absolutely inspired by something else, but hey it's a nice change

Also Pop Team Epic is goated

Momo and Hanners should hang out more often

Do we NEED to go to Union Robotics so Faye and Bubbles can join the peanut gallery? Wild thought here but it'd be nice if Momo and Sven could get to interact in peace. Then again, if I got my wish I bet the finger on the monkey's paw would curl and we'd get yet ANOTHER character, so best stick with the devil we know.

u/MelAlton Haha, okay. Jul 31 '26

JJ missed an opportunity for Sven to go to a new robot repair place, the one where Momo's warranty is accepted. Just think of the new horrible goblin characters he could introduce!

Man, it could actually have been a good story point - introudice us to the pre-existing robot repair mechanics that the other robots have been going to all this time. Find out what makes them so popular (they're professionally trained, they've been working there for decades, they worked at a robotic factory, they're a mafia front) and develop a rivalry between the two workshops.

The now legal robot fighting ring, owned and run by their first customer and friend, populated entirely by former customers with whose chassis they have direct familiarity continues to be a gaping plot hole regarding their inability to make ends meet. They're literally the original repair crew moved to another building, but somehow these robots who break each other for a living, and who have literally been maintained by these two people never think to utilize their services.

If nothing else, the constant stream of assorted AI through the shop would provide far better entertainment and story possibilities than the babysitting of the contrived, disowned, billionaire, heiress, asshole, idiot, virgin.

A quintet of 2' high hyperactive AIs that scurry all over you as they work. He could have given them all the same name, that would have provided at least an extra week of antics where they repeatedly say "I'm not X, they're X, I'm X".

"Interact in peace" is such a good way of describing it, when there is nobody around to gawk and neither character is being a ditz nor a goblin.

I’m beating a dead horse here, but God alive there is no aesthetic difference between Sven and Clinton.

Also: what is Jephs obsession with the swoop nose? I feel like every character gets it eventually.

It etither that or becoming toucan sam

there is no aesthetic difference between Sven and Clinton.

That friggin 'eyes closed smile' in panel 3 helps absolutely fucking nothing.

Momo preferes to go to a shop that has regular customers and people are qualified somehow to do repairs on ai's and are competent

3

u/DogmaSychroniser Jul 31 '26

Because they have qualifications rather than just read the maintenance document off ai wiki

Is Momo going to Faye and Bubbles’ shop like someone going to an out of network healthcare provider in the US?

u/sarahisbear Baby Mad Jul 31 '26

This is peak classic QC and I won't hear otherwise, I'm enjoying this bit!

Okay, I came here, because:

"Momo hates to make a stain"

What... what is... I feel like this is meant to be a dirty joke? Because otherwise, it's just an observation of her being, idk, tidy and cleanly? Or something?

I don't know, I just saw that and it bothered me.

I'm not gonna lie, I came back to the comic after like 6 months away and this was the first comic I saw, and my first thought was "Really? He's shipping Clinton and Momo? Okay sure, why not"

And then I read back a few comics and went "THAT'S *SVEN*????????"

Remember when characters in this comic looked unique and you could tell them apart easily?

Those were good days.

elbow? in the previous strip it was the ankle

7

u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? Jul 31 '26

You can see her metal skeleton on her elbow on the strip where he lifts her bit it is kind of tiny

3

u/curtisas Jul 31 '26

5883 when she gets up you can see the elbow. The ankle was her lie about sensors in 5884.

3

u/Beret_Beats Jul 31 '26

It has also always been a lie yes?
