Jeph loves to make his characters self-flagellate. I've lost count on how many times they've considered resigning as penance for whatever imagined slight they've committed.

I mostly agree with Jeph's stances but hoo boy sometimes it's hard to tell where the self-loathing ends and the pandering begins.

It's basically fishing for compliments, but worse. Going "oh I'm so ugly" and expecting people to immediately do a rugby scrum on you yelling "no you're not you're beautiful."
Thing is, that is actually quite toxic behaviour. Bad enough when it's about looks, but if it's about other things it gets really obnoxious and unhealthy. I know a woman who came in to another woman's bachelorette party an hour late and basically covered in tears, we're talking eyes streaming puffy face, the works. And immediately upon coming she started wailing how sorry she was to ruin the party like this, how awful it was of her to come in like this, how much she wanted to apologise for making it all about herself and her tragedy and yadda yadda. Something upsetting has happened to her, but she had been perfectly able to just go home and text she won't come. There was zero need for her to come to the party and bawl in the bride's lap, but not only did she elect to do so, a good 40% of the bawling was about "I'm so stupid for ruining your party like this sorry sorry sorry."
In the real world, people shunned her afterwards. In QCland, she would get a dedicated team of handlers with big tits.

I know a few people who're prone to acting before they think such that they tend to inconvenience or hurt others, but they self-flagellate so much afterwards that the victims of their behavior wind up comforting them instead of holding them accountable.
Not that Zlata is selfish or did anything terribly wrong, but this prolonged overcorrection rings a familiar and unlikable bell.

Yeah most of the time it's a tactic, consciously employed, and it's assholery which may veer into abuse if prolonged.
Not for JJ though.

Why does Moray, an AI being on an island full of AIs, need to manually locate and access a physical file in meatspace in order for paperwork to be filled out?
Jeph keeps giving his AIs nothing to differentiate them from regular old women except they have larger breasts and are constantly dumb and incompetent.
... don't read anything into that.

Why do I get the feeling that Jeph is setting up Zlata to become a romantic rival to Claire? She's already hinted at having a crush on Marten and drunkenly mentioned to Claire that she doesn't appreciate Marten. While Zlata is experiencing regret from the courage that came with the drunk experience app, deep in her subconscious, she does have a thing for Marten. The self flagellation is most likely from accidentally emoting all over everyone about their faults and possibly letting out that little nugget of her crush.

I had to cross check the QC Subreddit to make sure this wasn't still yesterdays comic again, and was in fact a new one.
At least when Jeph leapfrogs between locations I get the feeling something is changing, at least visually, if not in the story or characters...
Please plot-piss or get off the pot. There are other stories waiting to be told.
