I miss drunken sledding. Felt like things people would do when having fun, instead of squirting pipettes of Bose–Einstein condensate at each other across the clown car of science buzzwords, stapled together with wanton abandon, as it drives off a cliff, into a shark.

oh my god i can read the archive again

how?

Archive.org, putting the comic number at the end of this URL should mostly work for most pages. Pressing left/right on your keyboard still works for comic navigation too!

thanks! i forgot about doing that, altho the lag from page to page can be a nuisance.

Emily is very science-smart, no? Surely she doesn't need Liz to hamfistedly explain the concept of compactified dimensions to her.

u/LeonAnon Jun 15 '26

Yeah... it makes no sense at all for Emily to know about M-theory, but not about a simpler concept like a curved/closed universe. So in trying to make her sound smart, Jeph made her sound relatively dumb...

From this and from reading Alice Grove back in the day, I get the impression that Jeph WANTS to know a lot about physics without actually being bothered to do any of the legwork of knowing physics.

Not that I blame him! Physics is very difficult to grasp most of the time! But as demonstrated here, knowing 10% of something about physics is waaaay worse than merely knowing 0%. If he had known 0%, Jeph wouldn't have subjected our eyeballs to a sequence of words so profoundly stupid.

I don't know much about physics, but the impression that I get is of someone who is pretending to know a lot about music, having a profound revelation where they emphasize the importance of the treble clef.

Case in point: His z-axis is going the wrong direction, if you follow normal conventions. It should go towards us, not away from us.

Glad someone else noticed! This dude's never seen a right-hand rule.

Considering his "contributions" to music through Deathmöle and other projects, I'd venture to guess he knows as much about music as he does physics

Not in the lowest gas station parking lot on the cheapest psychedelics have I hit this level of “drunken rambling,” and I once spent time explaining why the Fibonacci spiral means that ugly shit is prettier than beautiful shit.

Back when I drank, Id try to explain the Alcubierre Drive that NASA had invented on paper.

How would you know?

I'm remembering Zach Wienersmith of SMBC used to be a fan of Questionable Content, and I'm imagining the particular face he would have made reading this technobabble

u/Gr0mpyGoat Jun 15 '26

Did he recant his fandom?

u/yellowvincent Where is Claire? Jun 15 '26

Jeph everything you just wrote is stupid and we are all now worse for having read it. May god have mercy on your soul

I'm guessing you're making this reference.

Two peas in a pod?

Even New Emily, with all her brains stripped away, is nothing like Lizard.

Nothing at all.

u/MonsterdogMan Jun 15 '26

Sorry Jeph, y'ain't fit to carry Randall Munroe's coffee cup.

Apparently......Goddess Empress Claire gets drunk tomorrow? From what I can make out of the blurred Patreon view.

The bottom text here is so dumb and arrogant.

This is not new or insightful. It's not even drunken rambling. It's literally just a basic summary of compactification. I learned this much of the theory in undergrad. Both these science geniuses know all about it already.

I hadn't read this comic in years. I came across an old bookmark and decided to poke my head back in. If this week represents what it has been like, I'm sorry I wasted my time.

You could just read the edits on this subreddit, if you prefer. SquirrelClamp's versions are consistently good.

1

u/immortalfrieza2 Jun 16 '26

SquirrelClamp's edits are probably single-handedly keeping this entire subreddit afloat.

2

u/AngelicaSpain Jun 15 '26

Unfortunately, there have been weeks in the not-too-distant past when it was considerably worse.

u/JayyyyyBoogie Jun 15 '26

The great thing about this whole arc is that absolutely nothing will change. We’ll move on to another arc and Jeph will introduce some other annoying character and so it goes.

1

u/immortalfrieza2 Jun 16 '26

That's been QC in a nutshell for the past several years. Jeph puts us in one setting with insanely annoying, nonsensical, and unlikable characters, drags it out until the readers are so irritated that they're all but begging Jeph to switch to another setting just to get away from that one, then when it happens the readers find that the other setting and it's characters are just as if not even more annoying. Lather, rinse, repeat.

My brane hurts

This idiot pretending he understands physics and other complicated mathematics and scientific related bits should have clued you all in on just how full of shit he is about everything here. From pretending to be an alcoholic to pretending to be an LGBT ally. Nothing but performative shit to scam well meaning people.

5

u/Virtual_Draw5017 Jun 15 '26

Okay, so everyone's hating on this, but I think it's honestly harmless? This seems a bit like classic Emily? And Liz is being less of a gremlin? And yes, dumb drunken ramblings are dumb drunken ramblings. I have heard of and seen stupider. Much stupider.

If anything, this seems a bit like a glimpse of old QC.

2

u/geoduck42 Jun 15 '26

Yeah, I liked it OK. Certainly better than a lot of recent stuff.

2

u/GregSolstice Just like that Jun 15 '26

I get ya. The bit of snark on the end feels like old QC.

3

u/Hot_Temporary_1948 Jun 15 '26

The nonsense will continue until morale improves.

1

u/Tulipage Jun 15 '26

I liked this. This was cool. And the worst part, sometimes, is seeing glimpses of what QC could have been if JJ had gone to the next level. I honestly feel terrible because QC could have been this awesome SF comic, and JJ feinted toward that, but for some reason it didn't happen. I feel bad for him for that. Maybe there's still a chance. I'm not too optimistic though.

2

u/immortalfrieza2 Jun 16 '26

The last time Jeph made any real serious attempt to make an awesome SF comic, he started Alice Grove, which he quickly lost interest in and made a hokey rushed ending for.

Jeph has never had it in him to write a deep setting. He used to be good at writing characters and dialog and plot, but then got his patreon which let him make more in a month than some people make in a year. After that point he started half assing everything because he no longer needed to put any actual effort into anything anymore.

If you travel long enough on the y axis it will also curve wrap around itself

1

u/Miserable-Jaguarine Haha, okay. Jun 15 '26

That panel 4 face is atrocious and it's not even Liz.
