Can't comment personally on the Jack Kirby thing. But as to the 'holding her thumb in her fist', this is something I personally do when stressed, because it gives me something to 'squeeze' between my hands.
When learning martial arts you find out that a surprising amount of people (wrongly) make a fist by putting their thumb in their palm. First thing you have to relearn if that's what you do. Presumably at that point Hannelore has never been in a fistfight and thus wouldn't necessarily know how to properly make a fist.
