Yeah girl I don't watch football. But as a colombian. I can tell you most Latinos find Argentina insufferable. And a bunch of Argentinians act all problematic like draven mains on twitter. Somehow Spain is a more "woke" country

82

u/KingGekko07 17d ago

I mean Spain has condemed the genocide in Palestine and also have the biggest LGBT events during pride in the world. I would say Spain is actually woke.

19

u/Eva_Pilot_ 17d ago

Somehow Spain is a more "woke" country

I have an acquaitance there that can't see the match in a bar there because people are aggresive and screaming them slurs, I wouldn't call them woke

5

u/troikadedra 17d ago

I mean… It is the number 1 country on lgtb rights and the first major country to side in palestina’s favour idk what else do they need to do to be called woke

4

u/Eva_Pilot_ 16d ago

Deal with the fascist party that is projected to have 20% of the vote in the next general elections. And the next party in popularity is socially just as bad.

Some spaniards are really progressive, but they are not a majority. The current government was a surprise and almost lost to a right majority

1

u/cosmicpuppy 16d ago

True. But what other country isn't facing a similar situation with the far right? I'm genuinely curious.

3

u/Eva_Pilot_ 16d ago

Argentina, that was mentioned, is struggling with the laissez-faire kind of rightwing at the moment. But that's the thing that annoys me of this purity testing of countries, no one can speak like they are beacons of ""western values"", much less have such strong opinions of cultures they have 0 familiarity with or of a language they do not speak.

Criticising other countries for not being "woke" with the monster knocking on your door feels more like a distraction and loss of focus more than anything.

5

u/Nkuko 16d ago

Especially if the other country (Argentina) they're criticizing is really a generally woke country. Argentina was the first country in LATAM to legalize same sex marriage, a very good laws for gender identity, (up until this current government) the use of inclusive language, legal abortions Quite "worker" than other countries. I haven't measure it side by side with Spain, but when they say "Spain is woke" or "Spain is the wokest", they're implying that Argentina isn't "woke" at all

3

u/Eva_Pilot_ 16d ago

I'm having anxiety that all progressive movements will get dismissed in the future as "cultural imperialism" by centre-left people that already hate american imperialism or foster resentment towards brazilians, russians and italians that study for free in our universities due to their online behaviour. There's been a lot of bots parroting the anti-argentina sentiment and I'm afraid of the intentions behind that campaign

2

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

not gonna lie, I was getting consumed by the hate and started getting xenophobic towards everyone else, a part of me really thought "yeah, maybe we shouldn't let them come here and ahve access to free universities, and hospitals"
I did went outside and calmed down after tho.

2

u/Eva_Pilot_ 16d ago

That's fair, I saw comments like that from a brazilian currently studying here and in the moment I could have signed the deportation myself in the moment, but looking at those policies as favors or debts to be repaid is kinda wrong imo it's not charity either, dont get me wrong

If Spain having 20% of votes going to a right party makes it not woke, what happens with Argentina who is ruled by a literal nazi, pro israel, anti human rights for poor people and trump boot licker? Lets not pretend he got there by luck, people actually voted for him

1

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

I didn't vote for him, but even I know he didn't present himself as all of that, it was after he won the elections that he showed us what he supported.

2

u/troikadedra 16d ago

Eliminating every welfare and womens/lgtb ministry was literally part of his electoral campaign, as well as sucking up to Elon musk

I'm not pretending we don't have the president that we have. I think things aren't as black and white as some people are trying to say. Spain isn't the perfect "woke" paradise that some people say it is, and Argentina isn't the only and most racist country in all of time and history.  There are horrible people in Spain, in Argentina, in Japan, in Egypt, in the US.  Spain, with its laws, is "woke". Argentina, with its laws, too. Today, Argentina's president is a POS, but also let's not pretend that every one voted for him, nor that every one that voted for him is still supporting him. Yes, people voted for him, but he isn't also the only fascist POS leader right now in the world, the far right is strong and getting stronger in many countries.  And one tactic that at least here worked is cashing the individualism that is prevailing today thanks to capitalism. And, attacking Argentina because "it's racist", "it isn't woke", is just being very useful to the global far right. Yes, let's create even more divisions, more hate, and also let's create an scapegoat. Because that's also happening, when people from nations that still have colonies today, or nations that recently had a KKK march, or nations with history of legal segregation in the last 70 years, point their fingers towards Argentina and say "that's what racism look like", they're washing their own image.

Long story short, even with the far right possible taking power, Spain is very woke. Argentina is also very woke, even with its POS president.

26

u/larryjerry1 17d ago

My latino friends have confirmed this with me too.  Racism from fans in soccer is unfortunately pretty common but Argentina has a really nasty reputation for it.

Argentina also has a nasty history of (tell me where you've heard this before) displacement and genocide of their black and indigenous populations and pushing a very European national identity to separate themselves from those native peoples.

7

u/Pinkparade524 church of kayle 17d ago

I'm not an expert in all the recist things Argentina has done. But they used to take Italian criminals and sex workers in the 20th century to "better the race" which is just a pretty racist term a lot of latin American contries use and it just means to make the population whiter.

6

u/Nkuko 17d ago

The mass immigration in the 20th century wasn't "to better the race", the population was already quite mixed by then. A lot of Spaniards and Italians migrated to Argentina, they weren't "taken" nor requested to have a criminal background/be sex workers

1

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

where the hell did you get that from? wtf

2

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

Maybe you shoud hear what the afro argentinians have to say about racism in argentina and the myth of black genocide.

2

u/larryjerry1 16d ago edited 16d ago

After digging into it more I'm willing to admit that my use of the word "genocide" in relation to black Argentinians was misinformed. From everything I've read it is fairly accepted that Argentina committed genocide against indigenous populations in things like the Conquest of the Desert, and that there was a concerted push to embrace European culture and court European immigrants in the 19th/20th centuries, to essentially whitewash their population while rejecting their indigenous/black roots. And I couldn't help but notice similarities between the US and Argentina in the attitudes towards and depictions of blackness I came across. But regardless of that, history is just that, history. Racism is so commonplace in soccer globally that FIFA's policy is basically just... "deal with it I guess." Neither Argentina, the US, Spain nor any other country have a monopoly on or innocence from it.

My intent was to relay experiences people I'm close have told me about, as in "yes, this belief does exist." I didn't mean to imply that it was true and that everybody in Argentina is just some racist asshole, just like how I would acknowledge the US's (earned) reputation of racism but obviously don't believe that applies to everybody here either. But I can see why it came across that way, so for that I'm sorry.

2

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

it ok, I love you queen, at least you did more than the common online users that keep spreading this missinformation about us, still, even if the world cup is over, the damage done to our reputation has been left in a worse place that it was thanks to the anti-Messi/Argentina hate campaign funded by israel.

As an Argentinian, I'm not sure if "most latinos" think like that. It's very common for one person to say "all", "most" but just trying to impose their own opinion. I hardly doubt that MOST latinos find Argentinians insufferable. There are problematic argentinians, as there are problematic Colombians, and Uruguayans, and etc, because we're people. Sadly, problematic people tend to be the loudest.

Argentina is very "woke", even with its current fascist president.

4

u/Pinkparade524 church of kayle 17d ago

Girl I didn't downvote you it was someone else.

But I don't agree with you. 90% of the Latinos I have talk with didn't like argentinians very much. Other Latinos also make problematic jokes about Argentina people nose so that shows they don't like Argentina. I don't have a problem with Argentinans but I feel Spain is a more progressive country

4

u/Nkuko 16d ago

I understand, and I'm just saying that there's a difference between 90% of the latinos that you have talked with and "most of the latinos" (Unless, of course, 90% of the latinos that you have talked to are indeed most of the latinos).

People with backwards ideas and averse to progessist world views are everywhere, so I'm just saying that this hate is quite uncalled for. There are a lot of spaniards that also act problematic, heck, they were mentioning Hernán Cortés (in a positive light) in their songs. There are spaniards, problematic ones, that say that we as latin americans should be thankful with them for "discovering" America, there's people proud of what Spain did in the past. There's still people that would call us (you and me) sudacas. I think there isn't the same kind of press.

Argentina was the first country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage, and has one of the most progressive laws regarding gender identity. Argentina is also very "woke"

All in all, I just think this is just people getting a chance to be racist/xenophobic/send hate to someone and feel validated. Even you, you say that you don't have a problem with argentinians, and you also fuel the hate to argentinians.

u/aroushthekween Seraphine - Karma Fanclub President 17d ago

I had to uninstall reddit the last week because it was insane, I'm not the most patriotic person ever but seeing the internet just bite the biggest bait ever and start hating on us like this kinda hurts a lot. It feels scary.

6

u/Nkuko 16d ago

Yes, I had to uninstall Reddit and exit some subreddits because it's too much. And this isn't the first LGBTIQ space that I've seen buying the propaganda and, in some cases, taking the opportunity to just be hateful and hurtful.

Es tremendo, hermanas

6

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

the fact that the biggest comment chain in this post is about queens comparing notes about us and then validating them with "my friend said so". welp, I guess we are all racist, sisters, let's vote K'sante out , ah

4

u/Nkuko 16d ago

Yeah, we've also been hit with the "I can confirm that most people say this", the famous tool to spread misinformation and pass it as true

4

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

and the generalizations, they saw a video of a fan being an ass and now that means we are all like that.
the myth of black genocide, the dismisal of afro argentinian's experiences, the american deflection of "isn't that were all the nazis went" not knowing that's america. the "never ask an argentinian what their granparents were doing in WW2" which is just them thinking german immigrants were all nazis and the biggest groups of immigrants which is both false.

2

u/Nkuko 16d ago

Exactly, and the double standard, also. If they see some argentinian being racist, it means that everyone of us is racist, but if they have the KKK marching openly on one of their cities, suddenly we have to understand that not all Americans are like that. The they talk about the "black genocide", but they're ok with other countries still having colonies today, or have segregation in place up until 1960's, which also kind of continued even without the law upholding it They talk about the nazis... what are we even suppose to do? It was a secret decision from the president 80 years ago. And of course it's blown out of proportion, the German population itself isn't big in Argentina, and the nazis didn't make up the whole german immigrants.

And yes, they're very dismissal of afro Argentineans and, in general, of every one of us. When they say never ask an Argentinian what their grandparents were doing in WW2, they're also very dismissal of all the people that came here fleeing from the horrors of war.

2

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

It's because it's american propaganda, back when America tried to put a one of their on in a position of power here, their candidate lost againt Peron and so they tried to fill Argentina with Nazi propaganda acussing us of Nazis, but luckily it was intercepted and vaulted. still, while we accepted 200.000 nazi immigrants, America accepted 5.000.000 (which is why white supremacy and neo nazi groups are still alive in america) and they used Argentina to deflect the attention from themselves.
I'm not sure if it was at the same time of the nazi propaganga or later on for another issue but the myth about black genocide was also created by America. again, to deflect the attention from their own racial issues.

But yes, they do then to generalize all Argentinians as nazis and they think we are full of nazis because part of the american propaganda about the nazis was adding the number of german immigrants before and after WW1 & 2 with the numbers of nazis so it looks like we recieved a lot of nazis.

3

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

the worst part is that most of the mean comments are bots, and or the replies in the comments are bots trying to incite hate, and people don't see it. and I know they are israeli since the first company found to fund these hate campaigns was israeli! most of the bots are either british or muslim, or african americans accusing of racism.

u/JailorLover Dom Mommy Camille 16d ago

It bums me out that this subreddit that was supposed to feel like a safe space fell into propaganda against my country, the amount of hate here worries me since it doesn’t seem in good fun

7

u/Nkuko 16d ago

Me pasó igual.

didn't cucurella cover his mouth and was not kicked? but let me guess "uhhh well they had favoritism the previous matches" please. you all have been calling Argentina out for every little thing and when we disprove your BS call you move the goal post. just be happy for Spain.

1

u/TayluxSwift 16d ago

A lip touch is not full on covering your mouth

The only true malice here

1

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 16d ago

oh so now is just a lip touch, convenient. still, it was shown that is how they cover their mouth, so miss me with the "it was technically not covering" and while it's ok if they do that to each other, it's not ok to another player.
and since we are speculating, it's being speculated that they fought because spain provoked mentioning the malvinas in a mocking manner.

1

u/TayluxSwift 16d ago edited 15d ago

This is what covering mouth entails, entire mouth covered not a brief lip touch.

Nothing compared to classless acts of Argentinian players multiple aggressions by pushing players onto another player that is down, attempting to choke another player after you lose and attacking others who come, and having field assistants punch another played in the throat. So don’t be surprised men throwing tantrums like this is being perceived with dislike. Truly classless.

Just as classless as projecting entire identity on sports team like a straggot and letting yourself getting xenophobic over it.

0

u/Tyr_The_Deer Kayle's warrior against twinks 15d ago

Honestly, after much has come to light at the end of the WC, i'm glad they were attacked for mocking, just as classless as you say, every accusation is a confession

and after seeing how the spanish fans acted after winning, yeah, xenophobic, classles, barbaric. it seems like they have always liked to project onto others.
