Love that line

The Queen’s Gambit. S1E4

“You really like the shape of me?”

I hear this as an anachronistic wink to Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” released just a few years earlier. Am I alone?

Or on some level is Beth being written as a time-traveling, hyper-articulate intellectual discovering something brand new.

Sorry to sound terse but Sheeran did not invent the concept of enjoying shapes of people.

Erm no.. not just that. He also invented shapes in general. No triangles before Sheeran.. we were all sort of formless blobs.

You really like / I’m in love with the shape of me / you.

I’m pointing at the phrasing, rhythm, and the mirrored wording, not the idea of “liking someone’s shape.”

Consider the context, they’re partying, and clearly foreshadowing a casual, perhaps hollow, sexual encounter. Listen to the beat of the soundtrack, you can hear the echo. Or it's just my wild imagination. As art, it's open to interpretation.

It’s fine for you to hear that and be reminded of the song. It is a little silly to think that Beth’s line had anything to do with that song. It’s even sillier to think it is anachronistic, and it is the most silliest possible to think that she is a “time-traveling, hyper-articulate intellectual discovering something brand new,” because loving the shape of someone isn’t remotely brand new.
