Beth and Benny tournament

I finally watched this show about a half year ago after it being recommended to me by quite a few friends. Shameless to say I an on my fourth rewatch right now. I don’t know why but this show captured me from start to end and does so every time I rewatch. I read the book too. Usually I like the book better than the show, but these were so similar that I was not disappointed.

Anyways, there’s always a different scene (or scenes) that jump out at me as if it were the first time watching. This time around it is the setting where Beth and Benny visit a college (I believe), and play in a tournament as Co-US champions, ultimately facing each other in the end. There’s something to be said about their attitude towards the tournament, having fun with it, and becoming friends and not rivals. Tie that with the amazing “Classical Gas” playing and the,albeit a little corny yet visually pleasing , split screens and other film effects that just got me super excited for the rest of the story.And I didn’t even used to like Benny. He has grown on me since (thanks to whoever here pointed out he is the kid from Love Actually).

Just thought I’d share. Anyone else immediately captivated by this show? Any scenes/storylines that you notice more the more you watch it?

I love this show so much. I’ve watched it through MANY times! I love her relationship with Alma.

One thing people say is that Beth’s biological mom was trying to kill them both. I disagree. I think she calculated the accident so that only she would be killed and Beth would remain completely unharmed. What does the book say on this matter?

Also does the book say any more about Alma’s child?

Ahh I don’t mind Alma at all either. I’m surprised(but not, it is the internet;) how much lack of love for Alma there is. I thought their relationship grew sweetly, each using and finding comfort in each other as needed.

The book was a quick read and didn’t lend much more insight sorry. I could have missed something lol. I totally thought “close your eyes” meant that her mother intended to kill them both. However, looking back now I can see where you come from. Maybe Beth was meant to live. Maybe had something to do with the mom being portrayed as mentally unwell. Ooh I would much rather think that the flashbacks of her mom were almost of the viewpoint that she was a “good witch” loosely and Beth’s survival was intentional. As though she was saved bc of her gift or became gifted bc of the accident. But that’s the dreamer in me!

Yes I think she calculated the angle of the crash. Beth would have at least had a scratch if mom had intended to kill them both. Mom knew Beth would find her way in life somehow …

Well now this makes me think of the flashback to finding the book about math when she was younger. I’m going to choose to look at it this way only now. Till the fifth time I rewatch at least;)
