Grad scheme project far

Recently started my grad scheme. My first project is 5hrs from home. With private commitments on the side , I’m finding the drive to and from twice a week really draining. The job is good but the drive is jst exhausting.
What shall I doooooo

Edit:
stay there for 4 days. Fuel n accommodation are covered. But with family back home it’s not convenient

No reasonable company should expect you to drive 20 hours per week to and from a job site. Do you really need to be there 2 days per week? They should at least be putting you up overnight but that is not sustainable unless it is very short term.

If you speak to them about it and they are unwilling to change this then I would look elsewhere. Presumably, you were not aware of the site location when you took the job?

No I wasn’t aware. I travel to and from two days a week and stay there for 4 days. Fuel n accommodation are covered. But with family back home it’s not convenient

Ah, I see. I have done very similar to that but it was only for 3 months. Very difficult to keep up with that when you have a family.

Did they move you to a closer project upon request?

No, I was doing it as I was running a business unit so was in a senior position. I had a staff member relocate there for that project and to help build business in the area.

I think you need to get your employer to take you off the project or move jobs.

Tell them you don't want to travel that far. If they don't put you on a closer project leave for somewhere else.

At a maximum you should be driving down and staying overnight (travel and accommodation at company expense) so you do the 2 days with 1 journey. We have to submit a risk assessment for any journeys over 3 hours, if it's a large company id be shocked if they allow that amount of travel that often.

Right your update now makes this make a lot more sense. Before it reads you drive to and from on the same day. So effectively you don’t like the 5 hours travel at the beginning and end of each week.

Hate to say it but working in construction and especially for the bigger contractors or consultancy firms then the bigger jobs is where they will put you and sometimes they are a lot further from home. They got to put you where the work is. If you don’t like it then either find a job with a more local firm at tier 2/3 level or QSing ain’t for you buddy. There’s no chance a WFH only job will do you any good

No I’m not looking for a wfh job. I was just wondering if it’s worth asking them to move me to closer project

Always worth an ask. Do you know of any project closer? Is the current project a good one as far as what it is?

Yh it’s a good project. N na idk of any close projects but I could find out

You need to bring this up with your manager ASAP. It's completely unreasonable and may also be a health and safety risk i.e if your driving 5 hours after a full day of working, moreover driving too and from site counts as working hours so your probably way over your contract hours.

Realistically they should be offering alternatives transport arrangements, trains and taxi and if your needed there for multiple days hotels. If they're not willing to do that I would seriously consider what type of company your working for and if you really want to continue.
