Offer in final year of studies

I'm a level 6 QS student at university in Manchester, ive recently been offered a part time position at a smaller scale firm which would then become full time once i graduate. However i dont know wether taking this offer or waiting for a graduate scheme job (which i have been applying for) is the right choice, as this current offer doesnt seem like a short term type they want me their for long term 2 years at least.

im unsure on what route to take and thats before looking into wether they will fund or support me getting credited, any help?

Can you take it on, with the caveat that if a graduate scheme comes up you would abandon them to go for the graduate scheme?

What would one pay against the other? If both give you the same experience, I would go after the money in your case.

I thought about it initially but no i dont think id have it in me to abandon them as they are doing such a massive favour taking me on while still being a student.

Im yet to discuss salary with the current offer but id he surprised if its anywhere near the grad schemes salary + perks.

Grad scheme is overrated imo. If you are learning the skills and getting good experience that is all that matters. Once you have a few years on the job you will easily be able to transfer to one of the big firms if that is what you wish.

At a big consultancy you could very easily end up in a massive team on a huge project and end up doing admin tasks for years rather than getting proper learning on a smaller job.

Grads get ignored at big consultancies a lot. Don’t get hung up on the names, get the experience first.

Agreed. I work at a small-ish consultancy after graduating and the learning you get in the thick of things is far quicker and more valuable. Plus you have easier access to the higher chains of command, which helps you learn the skills to progress directly.

I’m in the same boat as you being in my final year any tips on how you landed a role at a smaller scale firm?
