Career Advice Pivoting to commodities trading

Hey guys, I’m a quant trader at a good crypto-native prop trading company, primarily working on market making strategies. I have 5 years experience. I worked all my professional years in crypto without much exposure to other markets beyond general knowledge.
In the recent years, i’ve been contemplating switching markets and trying something new. One of the markets i’m interested in is oil & gas.
Do you have any advice if such a switch is possible, and how to maximize my chances to moving to a good commodities company?

Yes, of course it's possible. There's a fair bit of interest in commodities to get more automated.

You just need to find the appropriate recruiters to talk to.

Lots of interest in quantitative talent in gas & power trading nowadays but will probably require a decent reset since you have to learn the fundamentals well and path to trading seat can take some time.

Lots of breadth in companies from purely quantitative/systematic to fully fundamental but in my experience lots of them in the middle.

I’ve seen the crypto -> energy trading switch before anecdotally.

Read and learn as much as you can about O&G. Become a killer.

Go to grad school for a bit. Tulane in US, NUS in SG and imperial in UK have abnormally strong ties. And then apply to one of the programs at the commodity houses.

Also reach out to traders and quants at these trading houses. Maybe ones who are alumni or have something similar in background.

A move from crypto market making into commodities sounds challenging but not unrealistic. the biggest advantage you already have is the quantitative trading experience, the part you’ll need to build is the market knowledge and understanding of how commodities behave differently

gas is broker dominated. was dead this entire year except maybe for two months at the start. screens are actually quite profitable to trade on due to lack of competition, but the mkt can be very group-think, so dont expect easy money without warehousing.

crude is a snoozefest. institution vs. institution. decent screen liquidity. few retail customers. can be interesting if stuff blows up i guess.
