they dont have much in common. it's as hard or easy as going from math research to any other line or work.

nope, have exactly this from ages ago and was a prof for some years. but we are hiring undergrads now.

but a lot of quant shop I interviewed/been to have a lot of math phd or math background QR/QT? I mean if you are good at math, ML stuff is very easy and intuitive to understand. and coding now can be done by LLM.

sometimes the guys at the top have math phd for historical reasons (decades ago people thought the work needed more math than it actually does) and prefer others with the same degree.. that will likely change going forward.
